Amazingly, this CD completes this Haydn project by the Auryn Quartet: 68 quartets, 75 recording days within a period of two years. The ensemble did have many of the Haydn quartets in their repertoire, but certainly not all of them, so this series was quite a challenge. They have every right to be proud of completing such a mammoth task so successfully. | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Haydn - String Quartets
“These are altogether fine performances, with all the Lindsay's characteristic warmth and affection.” BBC Music Magazine, July 2006 **** “The two Op 77 quartets are among Haydn's greatest works and The Lindsays produce an unflagging energy to match their inventive vigour. They always seem to hit just the right tempo and so give every movement a persuasive character. In Op 77 No 1, we immediately appreciate the spry march rhythms of the first movement, the majesty of the Adagio, and the presto Minuet's whirling motion, with a particularly fine account of the wild trio section.” Gramophone Magazine, July 2006 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Haydn: String Quartets
“The Takacs Quartet come into their own in the lusty, swinging Menuettos, kicking all the time over into the spirit of scherzo. Gabor Takacs-Nagy's first violin, thrilling throughout in its diamantine intonation, leaps from open string to the heights for the Minuet of No. 1, and finds a nice balance of balm and fragmentation in the Op. 103 movements” Gramophone Magazine | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Haydn, Mozart & Beethoven: String Quartets
The string quartet is one of the musical forms which originated in the Classical period and Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven are regarded as the fathers of the genre. This delightful programme is brought together by the Royal String Quartet, who have performed with such artists as Angela Hewitt, Thomas Allen, Mark Padmore and graced many UK concert venues including the Wigmore Hall, Cadogan Hall and Bridgewater Hall. “Haydn's Op. 77 No. 1 in its entirety show[s] that these young musicians are a budding talent. Accordingly it's most likely that this disc, recorded in 2001, is not at all representative of their playing today.” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2010 “This excellent Polish quartet are fully equal to their varied technical and stylistic demands...The clarity and vivid detail of the playing is not in doubt...the slow movements tend to be the most satisfying, not least Haydn’s adagio, where the harmonic invention of the composer’s old age is gloriously in evidence.” Sunday Times, 18th July 2010 *** | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |

| | | Haydn - String Quartets Volume 2
The Amsterdam String Quartet Joseph Haydn’s remarkable series of 68 string quartets encompasses, in effect, his entire compositional career. The ten works together comprising Op. 1, 2 and ‘Op. 0’ date from his 20s (c. 1758 – 1761); and the final nine works of Op. 76 (1797), 77 (1799) and 103 (1803) were written after the ‘London’ Symphonies, and in close proximity to his oratorios, The Creation and The Seasons. The stylistic journey Haydn took from beginning to end is striking indeed, on account of the extended time period involved and the inevitable changes in musical taste across Europe. The Amsterdam String Quartet is one of today’s leading period instrument string quartets. The ensemble is specialized in the repertoire of the golden age of the string quartet: from 1762 to 1847. The Amsterdam String Quartet performs the works of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann and Mendelssohn as well as the finest works of their lesser known contemporaries. Its members are all internationally respected specialists at the forefront of the early music scene. In 2009 the quartet will embark on an extensive Haydn project which will include performing all the string quartets. Seminars, master classes at leading institutions and research in collaboration with the world's leading Haydn scholars will be presented by means of an interactive website dedicated to the string quartets of Haydn. “Using period instruments, the Amsterdam are particularly illuminating in the early Op. 20/4, pinpointing the bold rhythmic ambiguity of the Menuetto alla zingarese and the strongly driven energy in the Presto scherzando.” BBC Music Magazine, August 2009 **** | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |
