Sinfonietta Cracovia

In January 2015, Moog Music, the 60-year-old analogue synthesizer company, announced that for the first time in more than 30 years, it would once again build the large format modular synthesizers first introduced by its founder, Dr. Robert Moog in 1964. 2015, the 50th anniversary year of Moog synthesizers also marks the 10th anniversary of the passing of Dr. Robert ‘Bob’ Moog (1934-2005), inventor of the Moog synthesizer. To mark these anniversaries, Sony Classical is issuing ‘Bach to Moog’ – a brand-new album showcasing the reissued Moog Modular Synthesizer as well as the modern generation of Moog synthesizers, which presents the glorious works of Johann Sebastian Bach in a compelling and contemporary way. The album is produced by American-born composer, arranger and record producer Craig Leon, famous for his work with The Ramones and Blondie, as well as his work in the classical arena with such leading artists as Luciano Pavarotti, Joshua Bell and Sir James Galway. On Bach to Moog, Leon blends his love and mastery of classical music, electronic music and synthesizers and is joined by acclaimed British classical violinist, Jennifer Pike (the youngest ever winner of the BBC Young Musician of the Year competition) alongside the Sinfonietta Cracovia.

Benjamin Nicholas (the new Dobson organ of Merton College, Oxford)

In a golden age of organ-building, Merton College’s new Dobson instrument stands out as exceptional. It is only the third American-built organ sent to the UK since the Second World War, a bold commissioning choice which Benjamin Nicholas, Reed Rubin Organist and Director of Music in Merton’s recently established choral foundation, and his colleagues made after considering three factors. The College required an instrument that could sympathetically accompany its daily choral services – with sufficient flexibility to accommodate the works of many eras – and that honoured the Chapel’s ancient architecture. The instrument also had to be equipped to perform a large part of the solo repertoire, and it is the success of this third aim that Benjamin Nicholas sought to demonstrate when putting together the programme for the instrument’s first outing on disc. From the pre-pedalboard sophistication of native Stanley, to the mesmerising hues of Messiaen – and encompassing snapshots from the instrument’s vast literature in between – no inquisitive listener will feel short-changed by the gluttony of textures and colours on display here. In his debut appearance on disc as a soloist, Benjamin Nicholas combines flair and intelligence as he presents the stunning instrument he helped mastermind.

“Nicholas judges expertly the variety of colours in his performance...The new Dobson organ is a splendid addition to Merton College Chapel.” MusicWeb International, 12th June 2014

Stravinsky:

The Rite of Spring

Introducing the international debut Deutsche Grammophon orchestral album from leading French-Canadian conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the distinguished Philadelphia Orchestra.

A powerful musical tribute to the mighty Leopold Stokowski (1882–1977), 35 years after his death, from the young conductor who now continues his legacy. Stokowski spent some of his most important and fruitful years in charge of the orchestra in Philadelphia, in a position that brought him some of his greatest accomplishments. Musical showmanship, free-thinking and a populist approach to contemporary music are characteristics of Stokowski’s distinguished conducting and recording career.

This new album focuses on Stravinsky’s daring, revolutionary and game-changing ballet score, The Rite of Spring – given its American premiere performance by Stokowski and his Philadelphia Orchestra, and a work that reaches its centenary milestone in 2013.

Plus a selection of popular Stokowski transcriptions, including the famous Toccata and Fugue in D minor (J. S. Bach), as heard in its Stokowski version in Disney’s classic Mickey Mouse movie, Fantasia.

“Another Rite of Spring? Yes, and an absorbing one. Yannick Nezet-Seguin, mercifully, pulls no special stunts upon the listener. His is not an attention-seeking performance, but one which harnesses the exceptional virtuosity of the Philadelphia players towards actually making music of a score too often subjected to the crash-bang-wallop treatment.” BBC Music Magazine, April 2014 ****

“The opening [of Rite] is especially memorable with a darkly wailing, characterfully intoned bassoon...Thereafter the performance rides a course somewhere between guarded brilliance and elevated routine until we reach the closing 'Sacrificial Dance' which...is granted one of the most balletic performances I've ever heard, edgy, buoyant and viscerally exciting.” Gramophone Magazine, January 2014

“any newcomer needs a strong character and a good context – this has both. Yannick Nézet-Séguin treads well that line in Stravinsky between luscious depth and power and biting clarity and impact...A cunningly constructed, beautifully played programme.” The Observer, 29th September 2013 ****

“Nézet-Séguin’s army of admirers will love the young Canadian conductor’s affectionate homage to Leopold Stokowski, his greatest predecessor as maestro of the Philadelphia Orchestra...The playing is crystal clear in a dry acoustic, though stolid at times.” The Times, 2nd November 2013 ***

Robert Quinney (Metzler Organ of Trinity College, Cambridge)

Continuing its work with the rising stars of the early music world, CORO is delighted to be releasing its second recording with one of The Sixteen Orchestra’s principal members - organist Robert Quinney.

This new album, which was recorded at Trinity College, Cambridge, on the beautiful Metzler Organ, features a number of virtuosic works from Bach's early years including one of the most famous pieces of organ music in the repertory - the Toccata and Fugue in D minor (BWV 565). The disc also includes the Toccata and Fugue in F (BWV 540) and the Passacaglia (BWV 582) - one of Bach’s most well-known and important organ works. Robert Schumann described the variations of the Passacaglia as "intertwined so ingeniously that one can never cease to be amazed."

Robert Quinney is Director of Music at Peterborough Cathedral. As Sub-Organist of Westminster Abbey he played at the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton in April 2011. In addition to his daily work, he maintains a busy freelance schedule as a soloist and ensemble player, and is also Director of Oundle for Organists. His double compact disc The Grand Organ of Westminster Cathedral, recorded in 2004, was Instrumental Disc of the Month in BBC Music, earned a 5-star review in the French journal Diapason, and was an Editor’s Choice in Gramophone. His first disc for CORO - J.S. Bach Trio Sonatas for Organ (COR16095) - also received excellent reviews when it was released in October 2011.

“It is an organ of beautifully defined sonorities, well suited to the music. The programme begins with the D minor Toccata and Fugue, to which Quinney brings a remarkable freshness thanks to his flamboyant decorations.” Sunday Times, 4th August 2013

“the most distinctive feature is the way Quinney's authoritative distillation of the music never results in dry, academic essays - while, also, never playing to the gallery with maverick rhetorical effects...Quinney's Bach gets to the heart of the music with refreshing clarity and a communication born of genuine understanding.” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2013

“Several of Bach's greatest hits for the organ are heard here on an ideal instrument (Trinity College, Cambridge) in sober performances from Robert Quinney.” BBC Music Magazine, Christmas Issue 2013 ****

Alborada del gracioso (Miroirs No. 4)

Exquis! Stephen Hough presents an enchanting programme of French music, played with the filigree perfection and total command of the music’s expressive world that make him one of the most admired pianists of today. In typical Houghian style this recital is full of surprises and lesser-known gems from the repertoire, as well as works by the masters Fauré, Ravel, Debussy and Poulenc. A particular delight is Hough’s own arrangement of the Massenet song Crépuscule, a ravishing exercise in creative yet faithful transcription. This release is both a tribute to the lyric genius which flowered in nineteenth- and twentieth-century France, and a glimpse into the musical mind of a great pianist.

Read Presto's complete review of this disc here.

“His latest album recital is among the most enjoyable. “A sort of musical dessert trolley,” he calls it — a trolley where you want to eat everything in sight...The Fauré selections best display Hough’s connoisseur’s touch...The lighter French spirit surfaces in Hough’s own arrangements of Délibes and Massenet, delivered with delicious wit and grace.” The Times, 31st August 2012 ****

“it's a superlative performance [of Alborada del gracioso] by any standards, including repeated notes that turn me green with envy.” BBC Music Magazine, October 2012 ***

“personal touches make Hough the artist he is, but I can imagine some musical Francophiles balking at his free interpretation of Fauré’s D flat Nocturne, and more so at his eccentric Debussy (Clair de lune). Yet there are compensations aplenty: Ravel’s Alborada del gracioso and Fauré’s F sharp minor Impromptu are glitteringly played.” Sunday Times, 2nd September 2012

“a substantial feast of of masterly pianism...Hough can be too coolly objective at times but in this repertoire, perhaps paradoxically, the expressive simplicity of his playing can make your eyes burn. In Clair de lune and Chaminade's once ubiquitous Automne, now rarely heard, Hough conjures up a heart-catching melancholy that put me in mind of Cherkassy. I can't offer higher praise.” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2012

“[Hough’s] one of those keyboard polymaths who’s at home in whatever music he chooses to play, invariably casting new light on the familiar in the process. And the better-known items here do delight...But you’ll want this for the rarities...playing and recording are beyond reproach.” The Arts Desk, 6th October 2012

“what struck me on first hearing was the consistent clarity of his approach. In lesser hands a programme like this could so easily dissipate into a series of soft-focus washes of sound, but even in the most familiar pieces I found myself becoming aware of countermelodies and overarching phrases which had never before caught my attention.” Katherine Cooper, Presto Classical, 3rd September 2012
