André Isoir (organ Gerhard Grenzig, Saint-Cyprien en Périgor)

Bach is frequently represented in the guise of the 'old' Cantor of Leipzig, as we know from his famous portrait. But the majority of his organ works date from his youth, already clearly showing his genius. These pieces have a cool character, invention and lyricism that make them particularly endearing. Except for a few cantatas, they were written for organ or harpsichord, which were to remain throughout his life his favourite instruments, and those which he played himself as a great virtuoso.

KATT – a story of the organ and voice, a story of seeking one’s own path.

This is a story. It begins in a faintly familiar manner, yet after a while it takes you to never-thought-of regions where, besides the organ, Pärt’s “spiritual minimalism” and Messiaen’s heavenly birdsong, you encounter – unexpectedly and persistently – the human voice, in its full emotionality and tenderness. KATT is an element tearing down walls, including those between genres. Study at prestigious schools (the Schola Cantorum Basel among them) and collaboration with outstanding orchestras (Anima Eterna, the Royal Flemish Philharmonic, etc.) have led her to masterful performance of music ranging from Bach to young composers of her generation.

Her intuition and fascination with the sonic potentialities of the organ (particularly the incredible plethora of delicate timbres and tinges!) have led her even further – to creating her own pieces and, ultimately, to employing her own voice. She draws inspiration from the songs of the earliest Christian traditions, from sacral architecture, as well as the atmosphere of the moment. You may choose to listen attentively to the pieces by Bach, Messiaen and Pärt, splendidly and singularly performed on the wonderful four-manual organ of the Basilica in Echternach, Luxembourg’s oldest town. Or you may choose also to accept the invitation to immerse yourself in a story and witness a fascinating quest.

“Katt comes across as a remarkably strait-laced organist, delivering Bach’s BWV565 Toccata with beautifully crisp articulation and a minimum of effect, especially in a fugue where echo effects are decidedly subtle” Gramophone Magazine, July 2016

David Goode (organ of Trinity College Chapel, Cambridge)

Read Presto's complete review of this disc here.

“One thing that immediately leaps out is the use of some quite extensive ornamentation – not merely mordents and so forth, but brillante scalic flourishes leading into cadences...The range of colours Goode draws from the Trinity College Cambridge chapel organ is also impressive...Bach's compositional genius is shown in the best possible light by Goode's thoughtful performances.” David Smith, Presto Classical, 5th February 2016

Masaaki Suzuki (Schnitger/Hinz organ in the Martinikerk, Groningen)

The recipient of the 2012 City of Leipzig Bach Medal, Masaaki Suzuki has earned an enviable reputation as an interpreter of the music of Johann Sebastian Bach – as a reviewer in International Record Guide has put it: 'With Suzuki you can hear Bach's heart beat'. To a wide audience he is known as the director of Bach Collegium Japan, and the moving force behind the ensemble's acclaimed recordings of Bach's complete sacred cantatas. Perhaps less well known is that he began his career – at the age of 12! – playing the organ at church services in Kobe, where he was born. Suzuki has remained true to the organ throughout his life, and for BIS he has previously recorded Bach's German Organ Mass, as well as programmes of Buxtehude and Sweelinck. He here appears on a disc which combines some of Bach's best-loved works for the instrument, including the D minor Toccata and Fugue, the Partitas on ‘O Gott, du frommer Gott’, BWV 767, the Canonic Variations, BWV 769, and the celebrated Prelude and Fugue in E minor, BWV 548. The recording was made in Groningen's Martinikerk, with Suzuki performing on the renowned organ, one of the most important and impressive in the Netherlands.

“One of the most versatile of all Bachians, Masaaki Suzuki still manages to spring a surprise with this outstanding recital...From its woody chuff to bright rasp, the instrument is superbly captured here and Suzuki uses it with flair and imagination...both this performance [of Von Himmel Hoch] and that of the pungent Pastorale breathe wioth the best seasonal spirit.” BBC Music Magazine, January 2016 *****

Alborada del gracioso (Miroirs No. 4)

Exquis! Stephen Hough presents an enchanting programme of French music, played with the filigree perfection and total command of the music’s expressive world that make him one of the most admired pianists of today. In typical Houghian style this recital is full of surprises and lesser-known gems from the repertoire, as well as works by the masters Fauré, Ravel, Debussy and Poulenc. A particular delight is Hough’s own arrangement of the Massenet song Crépuscule, a ravishing exercise in creative yet faithful transcription. This release is both a tribute to the lyric genius which flowered in nineteenth- and twentieth-century France, and a glimpse into the musical mind of a great pianist.

Read Presto's complete review of this disc here.

“His latest album recital is among the most enjoyable. “A sort of musical dessert trolley,” he calls it — a trolley where you want to eat everything in sight...The Fauré selections best display Hough’s connoisseur’s touch...The lighter French spirit surfaces in Hough’s own arrangements of Délibes and Massenet, delivered with delicious wit and grace.” The Times, 31st August 2012 ****

“it's a superlative performance [of Alborada del gracioso] by any standards, including repeated notes that turn me green with envy.” BBC Music Magazine, October 2012 ***

“personal touches make Hough the artist he is, but I can imagine some musical Francophiles balking at his free interpretation of Fauré’s D flat Nocturne, and more so at his eccentric Debussy (Clair de lune). Yet there are compensations aplenty: Ravel’s Alborada del gracioso and Fauré’s F sharp minor Impromptu are glitteringly played.” Sunday Times, 2nd September 2012

“a substantial feast of of masterly pianism...Hough can be too coolly objective at times but in this repertoire, perhaps paradoxically, the expressive simplicity of his playing can make your eyes burn. In Clair de lune and Chaminade's once ubiquitous Automne, now rarely heard, Hough conjures up a heart-catching melancholy that put me in mind of Cherkassy. I can't offer higher praise.” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2012

“[Hough’s] one of those keyboard polymaths who’s at home in whatever music he chooses to play, invariably casting new light on the familiar in the process. And the better-known items here do delight...But you’ll want this for the rarities...playing and recording are beyond reproach.” The Arts Desk, 6th October 2012

“what struck me on first hearing was the consistent clarity of his approach. In lesser hands a programme like this could so easily dissipate into a series of soft-focus washes of sound, but even in the most familiar pieces I found myself becoming aware of countermelodies and overarching phrases which had never before caught my attention.” Katherine Cooper, Presto Classical, 3rd September 2012
