Benjamin Nicholas (the new Dobson organ of Merton College, Oxford)

In a golden age of organ-building, Merton College’s new Dobson instrument stands out as exceptional. It is only the third American-built organ sent to the UK since the Second World War, a bold commissioning choice which Benjamin Nicholas, Reed Rubin Organist and Director of Music in Merton’s recently established choral foundation, and his colleagues made after considering three factors. The College required an instrument that could sympathetically accompany its daily choral services – with sufficient flexibility to accommodate the works of many eras – and that honoured the Chapel’s ancient architecture. The instrument also had to be equipped to perform a large part of the solo repertoire, and it is the success of this third aim that Benjamin Nicholas sought to demonstrate when putting together the programme for the instrument’s first outing on disc. From the pre-pedalboard sophistication of native Stanley, to the mesmerising hues of Messiaen – and encompassing snapshots from the instrument’s vast literature in between – no inquisitive listener will feel short-changed by the gluttony of textures and colours on display here. In his debut appearance on disc as a soloist, Benjamin Nicholas combines flair and intelligence as he presents the stunning instrument he helped mastermind.

“Nicholas judges expertly the variety of colours in his performance...The new Dobson organ is a splendid addition to Merton College Chapel.” MusicWeb International, 12th June 2014

Stravinsky:

The Rite of Spring

Introducing the international debut Deutsche Grammophon orchestral album from leading French-Canadian conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the distinguished Philadelphia Orchestra.

A powerful musical tribute to the mighty Leopold Stokowski (1882–1977), 35 years after his death, from the young conductor who now continues his legacy. Stokowski spent some of his most important and fruitful years in charge of the orchestra in Philadelphia, in a position that brought him some of his greatest accomplishments. Musical showmanship, free-thinking and a populist approach to contemporary music are characteristics of Stokowski’s distinguished conducting and recording career.

This new album focuses on Stravinsky’s daring, revolutionary and game-changing ballet score, The Rite of Spring – given its American premiere performance by Stokowski and his Philadelphia Orchestra, and a work that reaches its centenary milestone in 2013.

Plus a selection of popular Stokowski transcriptions, including the famous Toccata and Fugue in D minor (J. S. Bach), as heard in its Stokowski version in Disney’s classic Mickey Mouse movie, Fantasia.

“any newcomer needs a strong character and a good context – this has both. Yannick Nézet-Séguin treads well that line in Stravinsky between luscious depth and power and biting clarity and impact...A cunningly constructed, beautifully played programme.” The Observer, 29th September 2013 ****

“Nézet-Séguin’s army of admirers will love the young Canadian conductor’s affectionate homage to Leopold Stokowski, his greatest predecessor as maestro of the Philadelphia Orchestra...The playing is crystal clear in a dry acoustic, though stolid at times.” The Times, 2nd November 2013 ***

“The opening [of Rite] is especially memorable with a darkly wailing, characterfully intoned bassoon...Thereafter the performance rides a course somewhere between guarded brilliance and elevated routine until we reach the closing 'Sacrificial Dance' which...is granted one of the most balletic performances I've ever heard, edgy, buoyant and viscerally exciting.” Gramophone Magazine, January 2014

“Another Rite of Spring? Yes, and an absorbing one. Yannick Nezet-Seguin, mercifully, pulls no special stunts upon the listener. His is not an attention-seeking performance, but one which harnesses the exceptional virtuosity of the Philadelphia players towards actually making music of a score too often subjected to the crash-bang-wallop treatment.” BBC Music Magazine, April 2014 ****

Robert Quinney (Metzler Organ of Trinity College, Cambridge)

Continuing its work with the rising stars of the early music world, CORO is delighted to be releasing its second recording with one of The Sixteen Orchestra’s principal members - organist Robert Quinney.

This new album, which was recorded at Trinity College, Cambridge, on the beautiful Metzler Organ, features a number of virtuosic works from Bach's early years including one of the most famous pieces of organ music in the repertory - the Toccata and Fugue in D minor (BWV 565). The disc also includes the Toccata and Fugue in F (BWV 540) and the Passacaglia (BWV 582) - one of Bach’s most well-known and important organ works. Robert Schumann described the variations of the Passacaglia as "intertwined so ingeniously that one can never cease to be amazed."

Robert Quinney is Director of Music at Peterborough Cathedral. As Sub-Organist of Westminster Abbey he played at the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton in April 2011. In addition to his daily work, he maintains a busy freelance schedule as a soloist and ensemble player, and is also Director of Oundle for Organists. His double compact disc The Grand Organ of Westminster Cathedral, recorded in 2004, was Instrumental Disc of the Month in BBC Music, earned a 5-star review in the French journal Diapason, and was an Editor’s Choice in Gramophone. His first disc for CORO - J.S. Bach Trio Sonatas for Organ (COR16095) - also received excellent reviews when it was released in October 2011.

“It is an organ of beautifully defined sonorities, well suited to the music. The programme begins with the D minor Toccata and Fugue, to which Quinney brings a remarkable freshness thanks to his flamboyant decorations.” Sunday Times, 4th August 2013

“the most distinctive feature is the way Quinney's authoritative distillation of the music never results in dry, academic essays - while, also, never playing to the gallery with maverick rhetorical effects...Quinney's Bach gets to the heart of the music with refreshing clarity and a communication born of genuine understanding.” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2013

“Several of Bach's greatest hits for the organ are heard here on an ideal instrument (Trinity College, Cambridge) in sober performances from Robert Quinney.” BBC Music Magazine, Christmas Issue 2013 ****

CD+DVD

DVD-ROM: Abode Acrobat Reader 9.0

Booklet 32 pages in English, French and German

This special multi-media project in a limited edition illustrates the encounter between an artist and an exceptional venue. This museum-quality publication, featuring Paradizo’s elegant packaging and presentation, includes recordings and documents witnessing one of the most important projects of the entire harpsichord revival and Early Music movement. Wanda Landowska’s performances and ideals at her Temple de la Musique Ancienne in Saint-Leu-la-Forêt, near Paris. This project commemorates Wanda Landowska’s vital impact on music making between the years 1927 and 1940. Wanda Landowska (1879 - USA 1959) recorded major Bach harpsichord works in 1935/36 in the legendary acoustics of her newly-built concert hall in Saint-Leu-la-Forêt, designed by Landowska and noted French architect Jean-Charles Moreux. These recordings are considered to be among the most remarkable Bach interpretations of the 20th -century. Remastered in 2010 with state-of-the-art transfers, they are accompanied by a DVD-ROM, containing over 150 images: photos, architect’s plans and letters on the Hall & Gardens from 1927-1940, with a commentary on each by Skip Sempe. It also includes unpublished documents from the archives of the architect Moreux. The DVD-ROM employs the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader.

Skip Sempe completes this project with an essay on the conception, design, architecture and history of the Temple de la Musique Ancienne and evoques the incredible musical emulation generated by this place and the major artist who was Wanda Landowska.

Paradizo is especially pleased to release this special project, which will help to increase awareness concerning plans for the restoration of the Temple de la Musique Ancienne and the revival of its activities. Hailed as "beautiful in conception and execution" since the first releases in 2006, Paradizo has scored the highest points throughout the major international music press - Gramophone, Diapason, Monde de la Musique, New York Times. Paradizo forged an immediate reputation which has ensured continued success through rave reviews, prestigious prizes and attractive sales figures. The Paradizo label was created by Skip Sempé after 15 years of recording for three major labels, many of which were distinguished with international awards. Paradizo features the new recordings of Skip Sempé as solo harpsichordist, chamber musician and director of the ensembles which he founded: Capriccio Stravagante, the Capriccio Stravagante Orchestra, the Capriccio Stravagante Renaissance Orchestra and the newly created Capriccio Stravagante – Les 24 Violons. Each title in the Paradizo catalogue is an indispensable reference for authoritative, bold music making, celebrating Skip Sempe and Capriccio Stravagante's renewed vision of creative interpretation of Renaissance and Baroque music.

Paradizo: Exuberant music making. Essential listening.

“I don’t know what today’s pundits would think of Landowska’s powerful two-manual Pleyel harpsichord, or of her richly coloured registrations, but the rhythmic energy of her playing is indisputable...the instrument comes into its own in her formidable account of the Chromatic Fantasy and Fugue.” Sunday Times, 17th April 2011 ***
