| | | Puccini: La fanciulla del West
The exotic setting of Fanciulla places the opera in California during the 1849-50 gold rush and is one of Puccini’s most innovative scores - both harmonically and orchestrally. It was a great success from the start and offers great opportunities for spectacle as well as requiring a team of singers with great acting abilities. This live recording from La Scala is headed by Mara Zampieri and Plácido Domingo as Minnie and Dick Johnson, under veteran Puccini conductor Lorin Maazel. | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

“Thanks above all to the passionate commitment of Mitropoulos, working with a fine team of soloists, this neglected work sounds a true masterpiece.” BBC Music Magazine, December 2008 ***** “Regis have come up trumps with this early (1954) live Florence recording, thrillingly conducted by the underrated Dimitri Mitropoulos...The sound is not of the finest but is more than acceptable when the performance is so thrilling.” Penguin Guide, 2010 edition *** | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Puccini: La fanciulla del West(Production - Giancarlo del Monaco)
“one of [Domingo's] most convincing roles” Opera “This attractive and lively production of Puccini's Wild West opera makes the best imaginable case for it, especially the exuberant Barbara Daniels in the title role; while Domingo is at his peak, in 1992, as the nice bandit Dick Johnson.” BBC Music Magazine, October 2005 “Slatkin conducts a bitingly dramatic account...In 1992 Sherrill Milnes was still an outstanding Rance, at once handsome and sinister, while Placido Domingo is just as warmly expressive...the pretty and buxom Barbara Daniels with her bright, big soprano gives a characterful performance...Bright, clear recording, bringing out the emotional tug behind Slatkin's reading” Penguin Guide, 2010 edition **** | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Puccini: La fanciulla del West
“This opera depicts the triangular relationship between Minnie, the saloon owner and 'mother' to the entire town of gold miners, Jack Rance, the sheriff and Dick Johnson (alias Ramerrez), a bandit leader. The music is highly developed in Puccini's seamless lyrical style, the arias for the main characters emerge from the texture and return to it effortlessly. The vocal colours are strongly polarised with the cast being all male except for one travesti role and Minnie herself. The score bristles with robust melody as well as delicate scoring, betraying a masterly hand at work. Carol Neblett is a strong Minnie, vocally distinctive and well characterised, while Plácido Domingo and Sherrill Milnes make a good pair of suitors for the spunky little lady. Zubin Mehta conducts with real sympathy for the idiom.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 “Domingo, as in the theatre, sings heroically...the crowning glory of a masterly set is the singing of Carol Neblett as the Girl of the Golden West herself, gloriously rich and true, with formidable attack on the exposed high notes.” Penguin Guide, 2010 edition *** | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |
