“Nucci simply owns the role of Rigoletto...a master-class in vocal acting...Machaidze is the very embodiment of Gilda. Her characterization is simply marvellous...[she] has a lovely full tone - this is no canary Gilda - with 'Caro nome' poised and emotional...The supporting cast is excellent...I was highly impressed by Massino Zanetti's conducting” International Record Review, May 2013

sung in French

Alain Vanzo (Duke), Robert Massard (Rigoletto), Renée Doria (Gilda), Adrien Legros (Sparafucile), Denise Scharley (Maddalena), Agnes Adam (Giovanna), Jean-Pierre Laffage (Monterone), Michel Forel (Marullo), Camille Pouquetty (Borsa), Jacques Scellier (Ceprano) & Micheline Dupré (Countess)

Orchestre Symphonique et Choeurs 'Jésus Etcheverry', Jésus Etcheverry

Paris, March 1961

Exceptional sound. This is superb: Vanzo's tone is light, bright and glorious; Doria's coloratura legendary. There is a strange 'rightness' about this French 'Rigoletto'.

Verdi: Rigoletto

Recorded live at the Sydney Opera House 2010

Alan Opie (Rigoletto), Emma Matthews (Gilda), Paul O'Neill (Duke of Mantua), David Parkin (Sparafucile) & Elizabeth Campbell (Maddalena)

Opera Australia Chorus & Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra, Giovanni Reggioli

One of Opera Australia's best-loved productions. Inspired by Fellini's classic film La dolca vita, Verdi's dark melodrama is transposed into the world of modern day mafiosi.

“Paul O'Neill sings ably though his dramatic presentation is dull. Emma Matthews's Gilda is far more consistent; she sings with keen technical aplomb and manages the tricky task of playing a character whose innocence proves a terrible vulnerability...Giovanni Reggioli is the decent conductor.” BBC Music Magazine, October 2012 **

Leo Nucci (Rigoletto), June Anderson (Gilda), Luciano Pavarotti (Il Duca di Mantova), Nicolai Ghiaurov (Sparafucile), Shirley Verrett (Maddalena), Vitalba Mosca (Giovanna), Natale de Carolis (Monterone), Roberto Scaltriti (Marullo), Piero De Palma (Borsa), Carlo De Bortoli (Conte di Ceprano), Anna Caterina Antonacci (Contessa di Ceprano), Marilena Laurenza (Un paggio)

Coro del Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Riccardo Chailly

Recorded in 1988

“the vigour and extreme originality of the score is realized...the best reason for acquiring this set is for Pavarotti's delightfully airy and confident Duke of Mantua. Surpassing even his own breezy account for Bonynge, the tireless tenor adds little touches of character and nuances of tone to bring the Duke to life...Ghiaurov, in splendid voice, is a wily, subtle assassin” Gramophone Magazine, January 1990

Roberta Peters (Gilda), Robert Merrill (Rigoletto), Richard Tucker (Il Duca di Mantova), Bonaldo Giaiotti (Sparafucile), Mignon Dunn (Maddalena), Carlotta Ordassy (Giovanna), John Macurdy (Monterone), Calvin Marsh (Marullo), Arthur Graham (Borsa), Robert Patterson (Il Conte di Ceprano), Joy Clements (La Contessa di Ceprano), Junetta Jones (Un paggio)

The Metropolitan Opera & Chorus, Fausto Cleva

Recorded live in 1964

“essentially a decent house revival of an old production...Richard Tucker keeps the Duke of Mantua light on his feet. Robert Merrill's gruff jester has plenty of voice, too, though again giving the suggestion of a solid run-through rather than a newly thought-through interpretation, but Roberta Peters's Gilda possesses a fresh-faced quality.” BBC Music Magazine, December 2011 ***

“Merrill's voice is a gorgeous instrument and his Rigoletto is handsomely sung...Tucker is in fine voice for the Duke, delivering a nuance-free interpretation but with a voice of gold...[Peters is] on good form, though not as fresh as in 1956, and she vocally acts the role...Bonaldo Giaiotti is a dark, doom-laden Sparafucile and Mignon Dunn adds luxury - and fine vocal acting - to Maddalena.” International Record Review, January 2012
