“In this 1988 recording, Soler's famous work is an arresting first track. Andreas Staier's rhythmical vibrancy and exuberant virtuosity makes compelling listening... The disc culminates in the final movement of Boccherini's Quintetto IV (Fandango, grave assai) sumptuously arranged and played by Staier and fellow harpsichordist Christine Schornsheim. If the sound of two resonant instruments, together with wild glissandi and furious ornaments is not enough to conjure up a seductive gypsy frenzy, then the addition of castanets (requested in the first printed edition) puts the icing on the cake and contributes to a truly rousing conclusion.”
