Maria Callas, Giuseppe di Stefano, Tito Gobbi, Raffaele Arie, Valiano Natali, Anna Maria Canali & Gino Sarri Coro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino & Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Tullio Serafin One of the great recordings from the EMI catalogue, recorded in 1953 and re-mastered in 1989. ‘It (The Mad Scene) is filled with the deepest pathos (as in her singing of “Alfin son tua”, in the section beginning “Ardon gl’incensi”, which is quite unforgetable) and it has an impulsive, excitable note in it that conveys the derangement of the poor girl’s mind. With all this goes the most superb vocalisation. Here is certainly some of the finest singing of our time, and there is one moment in the repeat of Spargi d’amaro when the voice is recorded with all the actuality of 3-dimensional sound. It is startling.’ Gramophone 1954 Based on the novel ‘The Bride of Lammermoor’ by Sir Walter Scott, and set during the confrontation between the supporters of King William III, and those loyal to the deposed James II. The drama surrounds the Stair family and Lord Rutherford, Edgar of Ravenswood. Donizetti composed the opera in a remarkable burst of activity, taking just 36 days to complete the work. The premiere in Naples in 1835 was a great success, and the opera marked the beginning of Donizetti’s mature period. Lucia di Lammermoor is rightly considered as one of the most influential pre-Verdian romantic operas, and also Donizetti’s masterpiece. The ‘mad scene’ (‘Ardon gli incensi’) is one of the most famous in all opera, and presents huge technical and physical demands upon the singer. |

Anna Netrebko (Lucia), Piotr Beczala (Edgardo), Mariusz Kwiecien (Enrico), Colin Lee (Arturo), Ildar Abdrazakov (Raimondo) The Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, Chorus and Ballet, Marco Armiliato (conductor) & Mary Zimmerman (director) Having dazzled opera audiences from St. Petersburg to L.A. as Lucia, Anna Netrebko triumphantly returns to the Metropolitan Opera in this touchstone coloratura role. Mariusz Kwiecien’s Enrico delivers theatrical truth with a matchless baritone, the lustre of polished mahagony. This Met performance of director Mary Zimmerman’s “imaginative staging . . . And nuanced portrayals” (Times) is a tour de force of music and theatricality. STEREO: PCM / SURROUND: DTS 5.1 Picture Format: 16:9 Subtitles: Italian/German/English/French/Spanish/Chinese “Director Mary Zimmerman's… offers a Victorian gloss on the drama… which adds a fresh and fascinating resonance. This is reinforced by the filming, often steeply angled from front stage, and enjoys uncommonly strong choral and orchestral support.” BBC Music Magazine, January 2010 *** |
