ATMA presents the first solo recording of Canadian mezzo-soprano Julie Boulianne, who is featured in a rarely recorded chamber version of Mahler’s two famous song cycles, Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen and Kindertotenlieder. She also performs a selection of lieder by Alma Mahler.
Recently making her debut at The Met, Atma has signed a 3-CD contract with her.
“A cunning combination, all beautifully sung” BBC Music Magazine, March 2012
“few such accomplished exponents of Rossini are able to summon up the plaintive contralto-ish sonority to create the right atmosphere for Mahler. That Boulianne can project the pervasive feeling of sadness without excessive weight is partly a factor of the 'domestic' arrangements employed...one of today's most promising singers is notably well served.” Gramophone Magazine, March 2012
“I was at once struck by the sheer beauty of her voice, her care over nuance and her intensity in expression. It’s a vibrant voice but not excessively so...There are many superb recordings of both these cycles and it is practically impossible to pick a clear winner, but Julie Boulianne belongs among the best.” MusicWeb International, July 2012
