Following on from their recent success at this year’s 2013 BBC Music Magazine Awards where they won the Award for Technical Excellence for their recording of Parsifal, PentaTone is delighted to bring you the next installment, Das Rheingold.

This is the 7th release in PentaTone’s successful Wagner Edition and the 1st one in the Wagner Year. Das Rheingold is the first release of the cycle: Der Ring des Nibelungen. The other 3 “Ring recordings” will follow in the course of 2013.

Continuing with their critically acclaimed Wagner series, the attached images show previous releases which have received unprecedented critical acclaim.

The recordings have various been awarded The Sunday Times CD of the Week, The Opera Choice of the month in BBC Music Magazine, the Recording of the month also in BBC Music Magazine and several Gramophone Editor’s Choices.

PentaTone’s Wagner Edition is an unprecedented project and we aim at supporting it with a lot of attention in the media throughout the year. In the Wagner year there will be a lot of attention for Wagner through articles in the media and performances of his opera’s. We expect therefore the interest for the PentaTone Edition (especially as a collector’s item) to increase substantially.

This next release will be supported by advertising in various magazines.

“Janowski's dramatic instincts and his ability to obtain orchestral playing of great intensity and presence are as keenly honed as ever – there are some thrilling interludes in this Rheingold...the classiest [vocal] performances come from Günther Groissböck's Fasolt and Iris Vermillion's Fricka.” The Guardian, 30th May 2013 ***

“he fields several outstanding singers from the rising Wagnerian generation ...Above all, this is Janowski’s triumph. His decision to focus on the music at the expense of theatrical ideas has been criticised, but he is vindicated by the gripping, dramatic playing here.” Sunday Times, 2nd June 2013

“Weimar National Theatre opens a promising ‘Ring’ cycle with Wagner’s original ur-scene.” Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung

Outside Germany, the name Weimar tends to evoke mixed feelings and pictures of German history of the last hundred years. Within Germany, Weimar means a town in the state of Thuringia arguably saturated with the “Deutsche Kultur” of the “Weimarer Klassik”, the legendary Bauhaus, and finally the life and work of Franz Liszt and his son in law Richard Wagner. In Weimar Richard Wagner began composing the fi rst part of his RING-cycle, “ Das Rheingold”. In 2008 the Nationaltheater Weimar started a new production of this unique tetralogy. The conductor is Carl St.Clair, a former student of Leonard Bernstein. With Michael Schulz’ fine and highly intelligent staging this new “Ring” production on DVD and Blu-Ray becomes an outstanding document of contemporary opera theatre.

Wagner: Das Rheingold

“Karajan's attempt to film his Salzburg Ring in a studio in Munich with a new soundtrack… stalled after one episode - and there's a reason. All Karajan's opera films are stilted attempts by a musician who should have stayed at his conducting desk instead of working in an area of representation about which he seemed to understand a little. This Rheingold is by some way the worst of these films.” Gramophone Magazine, May 2009

“Karajan as stage director supervises an evocatively traditional production...Karajan as ever is masterly in his control of his forces, making this an exceptionally enjoyable version of the Vorabend of the Ring cycle.” Penguin Guide, 2010 edition ****

Hans Hotter, Georgine von Milinkovic, Rudolf Lustig, Gustav Neidlinger, Paul Kuen, Toni Blankenheim, Josef Traxel, Hertha Wilfert, Maria von Ilosvay, Ludwig Weber, Josef Greindl, Jutta Vulpius, Elisabeth Schärtel, Maria Graf

Bayreuth Festival Orchestra, Joseph Keilberth

Testament is releasing the first-ever stereo recording of The Ring Cycle with Hans Hotter, Astrid Varnay and Wolfgang Windgassen. In January Testament released Siegfried (SBT4 1392), the first instalment of a ‘lost’ Ring recorded at the Bayreuth Festival in 1955 with Die Walküre (SBT4 1391), the second opera in the Cycle, following in May.

Thrillingly conducted by Joseph Keilberth (called by the late Astrid Varnay "a conductor with so much love, who was always there for you"), the cycle provides the opportunity to hear complete for the first time on commercial release the definitive performances of Hans Hotter (Wotan/Wanderer), Astrid Varnay (Brünnhilde), Ramon Vinay (Siegmund), Josef Greindl (Hagen) and Paul Kuen (Mime), in addition to the much-loved Siegfried of Wolfgang Windgassen, here heard in his prime.

“…the momentum of Keilberth's conducting offers strong support to the dark Wotan of Hans Hotter, and to the scheming of both Gustav Neidlinger's Alberich and Rudolf Lustig's Loge. This Donner (Toni Blankenheim) is a hammer-swinging Thor, and the Froh of the Austrian tenor Josef Traxl has a lyrical sense of innocence.” BBC Music Magazine, April 2008

“Here we are at the start of the revelatory Bayreuth Ring of 1955, and from the very first primordial sounds Joseph Keilberth establishes that this is to be a very special cycle. The opening scene is dominated by Gustav Neidlinger's nonpareil of an Alberich, who in the third scene becomes a frightening incarnation of malevolent power. But the Rhinemaidens aren't as steady as one might wish.
Scene 2 brings a kaleidoscope of authoritative interpretations, headed by Hans Hotter's commanding Wotan, a thoughtful portrait of an overweening, troubled figure sung with a Lieder- like attention to verbal detail. Georgine von Milinkovi? is a suitably imposing Fricka and a convincing nag. Ludwig Weber's expressive, articulate Fasolt is partnered by Josef Greindl's louring Fafner. Rudolf Lustig's strongly sung Loge – no comprimario tenor he – is not the most fluent piece of singing, but he gives the text real meaning. Among the minor gods Josef Traxel stands out for his beautifully lyric Froh, luxury casting from one of the leading tenors then active in Germany. Maria von Ilosvay as Erda and Paul Kuen as Mime are just as characterful as in in Siegfried. Over all you have once again a sense of a truly experienced ensemble, each member of which plays to the other.
Once again, one is astounded by the ideal capturing of the Bayreuth acoustics and by the superlative playing of the orchestra, stimulated by Keilberth's astutely dramatic conducting.”
Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010

“Keilberth's conducting throughout is electrifyingly intense...[Hotter] is here at his very finest early in his career, his voice steady as rock. Gustav Niedlinger as Alberich also gives a classic performance...The rest of the cast cannot be faulted, making this a hot contender in a closely competitive field, matching and even outshining most more recent versions.” Penguin Guide, 2010 edition ***
