The best of Ravel, Ravel's greatest hits - they're all here on 2 CDs packed to the brim, containing all of Ravel's most memorable tunes. Inevitably, the focus is on the immortal Bolero, beloved of the film industry. Ravel famously considered it to be his masterpiece, but claimed it had no music in it - an opinion with which many would take leave to disagree. La Valse extends the theme of dance, the Rhapsodie espagnole the theme of Spanishry and exoticism, while the compilation ends with a flavour of jazz as exemplified in the Blues movement from the Violin Sonata and the Concerto for piano, left hand (which in the 1930s the famous pianist Alfred Cortot dared to play using both hands, incurring the composer's wrath). | | | (Sorry, download not available in your country) | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | 20th Century French Chamber Music
An iconic record, this collection of two well-known (Debussy, Ravel) and two rarities (Roussel, Ropartz) of the chamber music repertoire was issued in both its LP and CD incarnations to great acclaim. It was recorded in the unusually spacious acoustic of Walthamstow Assembly Hall and its late producer, Ray Minshull, provides an amusing recollection of the genesis of this now legendary recording. "The Melos Ensemble is extremely sensitive to the nuances and rubatos of the music, produces some lovely tone, and succeeds in making the work hold together..." Gramophone. “A desert island disc if ever there was one! The ethereal Debussy sonata and the equally heavenly Ravel Introduction and Allegro receive immaculate performances that have not been surpassed since the present record appeared in the early 1960s...Inspired playing and beautifully balanced recorded sound.” Penguin Guide, 2011 edition | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

“Kyung-Wha Chung's classic recording, made in London in 1977, has been a favourite since it first saw the light of day on LP in 1980. There is a freshness to her playing that conveys the free-flowing ease of the music, with melodies beautifully shaped and rhythms lithe. She maintains a particularly fluid relationship with her pianist, Radu Lupu, who revels in the fact that Franck's keyboard part is no mere accompaniment but an equally virtuoso and essential element of the whole.” The Telegraph, 21st June 2008 (on Frank's Violin Sonata) “Here we have masterpieces from the French tradition in excellent performances that have won the status of recording classics. Kyung-Wha Chung and Radu Lupu are a fine duo who capture and convey the deli- cacy and poetry of the Franck Sonata as well as its rapturous grandeur, and never can the strict canonic treatment of the great tune in the finale have sounded more spontaneous and joyful. They are no less successful in the different world of the elusive Sonata which was Debussy's last work, with its smiles through tears and, in the finale, its echoes of a Neapolitan tarantella. The 1977 recording is beautifully balanced, with a natural sound given to both the violin and piano. The Melos Ensemble recorded the Ravel Introduction and Allegro 15 years before, but here too the recording is a fine one for which no allowances have to be made even by ears accustomed to good digital sound; as for the work itself, this has an ethereal beauty that's nothing short of magical and Osian Ellis and his colleagues give it the most skilful and loving performance. A wonderful disc and a must-buy.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 | | | (Sorry, download not available in your country) | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |
