Verdi: Aida

Kate Aldrich (Amneris), Adina Aaron (Aida), Scott Piper (Radamès), Paolo Pecchioli (Il Re) & Giuseppe Garra (Amonasro)

Orchestra and Chorus of the Fondazione Arturo Toscanini, Massimiliano Stefanelli (conductor) & Franco Zeffirelli (stage director)

This refreshing production of Aida by the master of extravaganza, Franco Zeffirelli, comes from Teatro Giuseppe Verdi in Busseto, Verdi’s birthplace. The roles are sung by talented young performers such as Kate Aldrich and Scott Piper to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Verdi’s death. Despite the small size of this wonderful theater Zeffirelli realized what he does best: a spectacle.

Conducted by Massimiliano Stefanelli the Orchestra and Chorus of the Fondazione Arturo Toscanini convince with an overwhelming performance. And when it comes to the final duet between the two lovers, Adina Aaron and Scott Piper do it with a plomb – in a tender and very moving way.

Verdi: Aida

Recorded live at Arena di Verona, June 2012

Hui He (Aida), Marco Berti (Radames), Andrea Ulbrich (Amneris), Ambrogio Maestri (Amonasro), Roberto Tagliavini (The King), Antonella Trevisan (High Priestess) & Antonello Ceron (A messenger)

Orchestra, Chorus and Corps de Ballet of the Arena di Verona, Daniel Oren (conductor) & Gianfranco De Bosio (director)

The grand scale and magnificent acoustics of the Roman arena in Verona are ideally suited to the pageantry of Verdi's Egyptian opera, presented here in a staging that is true to the original 1913 production, framed by obelisks and sphinxes and filled with chorus and dancers. Chinese soprano Hui He has won international acclaim for her portrayal of the eponymous slave girl whose forbidden love for the war hero Radamés (Marco Berti, the experienced Verdi tenor) brings death to them both.

Filmed in the 2000 year-old Roman amphitheatre at Verona with 20,000 seats – the ideal backdrop for this epic production.

Filmed in 3D & High Definition in 2012.

2D/3D Hybrid Blu-Ray that will play on any Blu-Ray player.

Gianfranco De Bosio has revived the original 1913 production.

Conducted by Daniel Oren, Maestro of the Arena for 30 years.

“[Hui He] is quite magnificent, her silvery-toned soprano soaring above the orchestra. Add her involved and expressive acting and excellent vocal characterisation to a smooth legato line and I was bowled over...[Ulbrich] has the vocal heft and bite to come over in the large Verona Arena whilst her committed acting was also welcome.” MusicWeb International, 13th November 2013

“Ulbrich is a fiery Amneris. But it's the Ethiopians who carry the day, with Maestri's thundering Amonasro and, above all, Chinese soprano Hui He's Aida, vocally strong and passionate...And at its best 3D really does enhance your sense of being there.” BBC Music Magazine, February 2014 ***

“Hui He is one of the world's Aidas of choice, and there's no denying that she's got what it takes...Berti, similarly, has a true Verdi tenor as Radames...Ulbrich is an impressive Amneris without a well-placed top couple of notes...Maestri, who looks as if he could stomp the Egyptians to death if he wanted to, sings and acts a monumental Amonasro.” International Record Review, February 2014

3 July 1951 Mexico, Palacio de Bellas Artes

Maria Callas (Aida), Mario del Monaco (Radamès), Oralia Domínguez (Amneris), Giuseppe Taddei (Amonasro), Roberto Silva (Ramphis), Ignacio Ruffino (Il Re di Egitto), Rosa Rodríguez (Una Sacerdotessa), Carlos Sagarminaga (Un Messaggero)

Palacio de las Bellas Artes, Oliviero de Fabritiis

Aida held an important place in the earlier years of Callas’s career, and in 1950 it brought her debut at La Scala, Milan, the theatre where she soon became reigning diva. That same year, she sang the role of the Ethiopian princess in Mexico City, arousing near-hysteria among the audience (and anger in the competitive tenor singing Radamès) by interpolating a stupendous top E flat at the end of the Triumphal Scene, which closes Act II of the opera. She repeated the feat on her return to Mexico the following year, when this live recording was made. This time, the Radamès was the celebrated, heroic-voiced Italian, Mario del Monaco, while the Mexican mezzo-soprano Oralia Domínguez made an opulent Amneris and Giuseppe Taddei, one of the leading Italian baritones of his time, sang a powerful Amonasro.

Orchestra del Teatro dell'Opera di Roma, Sir Georg Solti

“Solti motivates his account of Verdi's score with thrilling dynamism, fully displaying the music's grandeur and depth as well as deriving considerable refinement from his Roman forces. His cast is led by Leontyne Price, the Aida of her generation, her enriched soprano fleshing out the title role with heady sensuality” BBC Music Magazine, 2013

“Leontyne Price had a gift for fusing voice, words and meaning, and was even able to adapt her vocal colours to her conductor. . . She had the voice of velvet, used it with wisdom and artistry for 50 years, and set vocal and theatrical standards in Verdi” Gramophone Magazine

Verdi: Aida

Teatro Regio Torino, October 2015

Kristin Lewis (Aida), Marco Berti (Radames), Anita Rachvelishvili (Amneris), Mark S. Doss (Amonasro), In-Sung Sin (Il Re), Giacomo Prestia (Ramfis)

Orchestra Teatro Regio Torino, Gianandrea Noseda

STAGED BY: William Friedkin

Originally commissioned to celebrate the completion of the Suez Canal and the opening of Cairo’s new opera house, Verdi’s Egyptian epic Aida is here seen in a spectacular new staging in the Teatro Regio Torino by the Oscar-winning American film director William Friedkin, creator of such famous movies as The Exorcist and The French Connection. The cast featuring the American soprano Kristin Lewis, who exhibits “a remarkable voice, which she uses with powerful dramatic instinct” (La Stampa), and the Georgian mezzo-soprano Anita Rachvelishvili, whose Amneris “dominates the stage with her dark, rounded, irresistible voice and extraordinary stage presence” (La Gazzetta Musicale) is first-rate. All were united in praise of Noseda: “he controls everything - orchestra, singers, chorus, dancers, acrobats – with an all-encompassing overview” (La Stampa); “he knows exactly when it’s time to linger over a timbre, a colour, an expressive chord” (Corriere della Sera).
