Teatro La Fenice di Venezia, Gabor Otvös

Parsifal, the last opera written by the great German composer, was premièred in Bayreuth in 1882. In the fifty years of his artistic life Wagner did not only mature and outline more and more clearly the aesthetic ideals that formed the intellectual substratum of his composing activity but definitely upset the course of the history of music and of the music theatre. The wide range of his cultural interests, his operational daring, ability to blend elements of different origin, complete rejection of any form of operatic routine and grandiosity of onception make of each and every opera that he wrote a sort of artistic case in its own, where the experiences of previous works are salvaged or abandoned ccording to the expressive needs, which are never subordinate to contingent ecessities. Performing this complex work is no simple task, but the cast on stage at Teatro La Fenice in Venice did so with flying colours.

Rundfunkchor Leipzig, Rundfunkchor Berlin, Thomanenchor Leipzig & Rundfunk-Sinfonie-Orchester Leipzig, Herbert Kegel

This concert recording represents a real stroke of luck, for which we have to thank a conductor – Herbert Kegel – who championed music during the GDR era that was not viewed as "politically correct". This 1975 recording of Parsifal, featuring snappy tempos and devoid of the usual mystique surrounding Wagner, is an interpretation which seems to have evolved well ahead of its time.

This set presents all of Wagner’s mature operas from seven leading European opera houses recorded during the last decade, featuring many of the most acclaimed Wagner singers of our age, in productions which exult in the force of Ezra Pound’s dictum, ‘Great art is news that stays news’. The directors Harry Kupfer, Nikolaus Lehnhoff, David McVicar and others heed Wagner’s own persuasive plea, ‘Children, make it new’, in stagings employing sophisticated modern technology within grand designs which face up to the breadth of Wagner’s dramatic genius and the social and political implications of his work for us today.
