Mahler: Das Lied von der Erde

Mahler: Das Lied von der Erde

Alice Coote (mezzo), Burkhard Fritz (tenor)

Netherlands Philharmonic, Marc Albrecht

Das Lied is considered the most personal of Mahler’s works. It represents a synthesis of the two great pillars in Mahler’s oeuvre, the symphony and the song. On the face of it, it is cycle of six orchestral songs. But at the same time, it features three protagonists: not just the two solo voices, but the orchestra as well, and its formal structure is symphonic in nature.

The two soloists on this recording are the best known for this work. They sing it all over the world with top orchestras to fabulous reviews and PentaTone is delighted to welcome them to their label. The Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra has a splendid reputation for its Mahler performances mainly under previous Music Director Harmut Haenchen.

“[Coote's] singing may not be as sumptuous as some, but it is exquisitely coloured; every word matters, and the sadness that pervades the mezzo songs in particular is conveyed without it ever becoming self-conscious or sentimental...well worth hearing, especially for Coote's contribution” The Guardian, 23rd May 2013 ****

Mahler:

Das Lied von der Erde

Carolyn Watkinson & John Mitchinson

Schumann:

Symphony No. 4 in D minor, Op. 120

Some of the greatest conductors have worked with the BBC Philharmonic – Sanderling (b.1912), conducting here in 1987, knew the orchestra well having first conducted them some 13 years previously when they were known as the BBC Northern Symphony Orchestra.

Sanderling has had an illustrious career with orchestras such as the Leningrad Philharmonic, Berlin Symphony Orchestra, Dresden Staatskapelle and the Philharmonia, retiring only 9 years ago.

The BBC Legends recording of his Mahler 9 with the BBC Philharmonic from 1982 received excellent reviews.

John Mitchinson, often chosen for the tenor role in Das Lied von der Erde, performed the work many times with the BBC Philharmonic to great acclaim, with two BBC Legends recordings featured in the Penguin Guide – ‘his voice focuses ever more securely through the work with many cleanly ringing top notes’‘John Mitchinson is here at his finest, contrasting his firm, heroic tone in the first song against delicate half-tones, using his head-voice.’

Known for enjoying live performances and having an affinity for late Mahler, Sanderling’s reading of Das Lied von der Erde is inherently musical.

This is the first DVD release of this material.

“Sanderling makes it all seem relatively effortless, elevating Mahler to the proverbial Olympian heights with no visible means of support...[he] is blessed with singers highly compatible with his interpretation. The versatile tenor John Mitchinson soars comfortably even in the peice's highest registers, and mezzo-soprano Carolyn Watkinson - best known for singing Baroque repertory - brings to Mahler a comparable sense of musical and emotional transparency.” Gramophone Magazine, January 2012

“Sanderling's Schumann's Fourth Symphony is robust, his Mahler Lied von der Erde (Mitchinson and Watkinson in marvellous voice) strangely Olympian.” BBC Music Magazine, January 2012 ****

Mahler: Das Lied von der Erde

Mahler: Das Lied von der Erde

“In a famous BBC TV interview Klemperer declared that he was the objective one, Walter the romantic, and he knew what he was talking about. Klemperer lays this music before you, even lays bare its soul by his simple method of steady tempos (too slow in the third song) and absolute textural clarity, but he doesn't quite demand your emotional capitulation as does Walter. Ludwig does that. In the tenor songs, Wunderlich can't match Patzak, simply because of the older singer's way with the text; 'fest steh'n' in the opening song, 'Mir ist als wie im Traum', the line plaintive and the tone poignant, are simply unsurpassable.
By any other yardstick, Wunderlich is a prized paragon, musical and vocally free. The sound on the revived EMI is very fresh: with voice and orchestra in perfect relationship and everything sharply defined, the old methods of the 1960s have nothing to fear here from today's competition.
These two old recordings will never be thrust aside; the Walter for its authority and intensity, the feeling of being present on an his- toric occasion, the Klemperer for its insistent strength and beautiful singing.”
Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010

“...I prefer the 1967 account by Christa Ludwig and Fritz Wunderlich, who met on equal vocal terms under Otto Klemperer [to other recordings]. Wunderlich is particularly expressive and Ludwig, in her vocal prime, equals Fassbaender in the depth of emotion she finds in the longest of the six songs, "Der Abschied" (The Farewell). Klemperer, admired and berated for the stateliness of his tempos, brings decades of insight to one of Mahler's most kaleidoscopic scores.” The Telegraph, 9th August 2008
