Mozart: | Mass in C minor, K427 'Great' Reconstruction by Helmut Eder Arleen Auger (soprano), Doris Soffel (mezzo soprano), Thomus Moser (tenor), Stephen Roberts (bass) & Wolfram Gehring (organ) Kölner Rundfunkchor & Kölner Rundfunk-sinfonieorchester, Gary Bertini Requiem in D minor, K626 Krisztina Laki (soprano), Doris Soffel (mezzo-soprano), Robert Swensen (tenor) & Thomas Quasthoff (bass) Kölner Rundfunkchor & Kölner Rundfunk-sinfonieorchester, Gary Bertini |
This 2-CD set contains recordings of music conducted by Gary Bertini when he was chief conductor of the Radio Symphony Orchestra Cologne of the West-German Radio Corporation Cologne (WDR). In the Mass in C Minor, the first soprano part is full of virtuoso technical difficulties – especially in the famous “Et incarnatus est” passage – and here legendary soprano Arleen Augér interprets it in an exemplary manner. “Arleen Auger is outstanding among the soloists and gives a radiant account….. this is a memorable performance with admirable scale-work by Auger, and her floated, softer singing always gives pleasure.” Gramophone on a previous Mozart recording |

Marie Arnet (soprano), Anna Stephany (mezzo), Andrew Kennedy (tenor) & Darren Jeffrey (bass) London Symphony Orchestra & London Symphony Chorus, Sir Colin Davis Recorded live at the Barbican, September 2007 "There is an intangible connection that occurs sometimes between the members of an orchestra and a particular conductor. That chemistry exists between the musicians of the LSO and Colin Davis. This association increasingly seems a legendary pairing, along the lines of Herbert von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic. Davis
conveyed steadiness and solemnity to chilling effect. The slurring figures in the violins that accent the off beats were like sneaky little jabs in your gut. The soloists seemed as inspired by Davis's urgent conducting as the formidable chorus was." New York Times Concert Review |

| | | Mozart: Requiem in D minor, K626Live Recording, Chicago, March 13th, 1958
Maria Stader (soprano), Maureen Forrester (alto), David Lloyd (tenor) & Otto Edelmann (bass) Chicago Symphony Orchestra & Chorus, Bruno Walter This recording documents a very rare edition of Mozart’s Requiem. “As in Walter’s other currently available performance on disc of the work, this one is taut, closely worked, never broad or indulgent in the Giulini or Karajan manner (those conductors perceiving it in more personal terms). Listen to the counterpoint of ‘Quam olim Abrahae’ and you will hear the sharp rhythms that characterize the whole.” Gramophone on another recording of Walter conducting his beloved Mozart Requiem |
