Le Tombeau de Couperin

Ma Mère l'Oye

Valses nobles et sentimentales

Une barque sur l'océan (orchestral version)

The seeds were planted in the early 1970s when deutsche Grammophon realised what amazing results could be achieved by recording the multichannel tapes, with either four or eight channels. Yet, due to a few restrictions, they never fully blossomed. Flaws in the playback equipment meant that music connoisseurs were prevented from enjoying these recordings in the way that artists, producers, engineers and other professionals intended, even though recording technology was already way ahead of its time.

Now – over a quarter of a century later – thanks to the arrival of the multi-channel super audio CD, there is finally a system available which permits these precious recordings to be released in the quality they already deserved back then.

As a result of Pentatone’s labour of love of re-recording and re-mastering this release, we get to witness and experience all of the images from different moods and places that ravel intended to arouse with his impressionistic pieces. In this release, we are spoiled with his works such as Le tombeau de Couperin, Menuet antique, Ma mere l’aye, valses nobles et sentimentales and Une barque sur l’ocean. As Ravel is famous for his melodies, exquisite orchestration and imaginative instrumentatal textures, Pentatone is equally known for its superior audio quality, and this handsome collection of orchestral works on SACD is surely one not to be missed.

Shéhérazade - Ouverture de féerie

Menuet antique

Fanfare from 'L'Eventail de Jeanne'

Stéphane Denève‘s Ravel cycle continues to take shape. In this second installment of the

complete orchestral music we hear the ballet version of "Ma mère l'oye", the early Overture to "Shéhérazade", "Une barque sur l'ocean", "Menuet antique" and " L'éventail de Jeanne: Fanfare". Once again Denève proves that he possesses all the requisite sensitivity as a conductor, and when matched with an orchestra of this caliber, the results bring out all the magic and kaleidoscopic orchestral color.

Denève and the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra (SWR) are a dream team in this music and even a show that even after a hundred years, Ravel’s scores have not lost their bloom.

“Denève for the most part coaxes a rich, warm sound from the orchestra, and supports this with slow tempos in movements like the 'Prélude' and 'Le jardin féerique' from the full ballet suite of Ma mère l'Oye.” BBC Music Magazine, January 2015 ****

“Denève and the Stuttgart orchestra interpret with animation and with persuasive ideas about the music's dramatic rise and fall. The other works, too, testify to Denève's experience in this music, with colours finely etched in, a fluidity of movement and a real sense that he has his finger firmly on the Ravel pulse.” Gramophone Magazine, January 2015

Valses nobles et sentimentales

Gaspard de la Nuit

Ma Mère l'Oye

Vanessa Wagner (piano)

'Pavane pour une infante défunte', an early work, takes us into the world of dance that perfumes the musical world of Ravel. 'Gaspard de la nuit' in the French Romantic tradition, is a triptych inspired by three of Aloysius Bertrand's prose-ballads: Ondine, the water nymph; Le Gibet (Gallows), paints a gruesome picture of 'a bell tolling from the walls of a city, beneath the skyline, and the body of a hanged man, reddened by the setting sun'; Scarbo, depicts the night-time mischief of a mocking dwarf. We return to the dance with the bold 'Valses nobles et sentimentales', a series of waltzes written in 1911. Finally, 'Ma Mère l'Oye' (Mother Goose), shows Ravel's affection for his childhood days. Vanessa Wagner brings out the modernity of these scores, their sudden movements of violence, their moments of ineffable sweetness. She plays with rigour, intensity and a velvet touch.

“There are plenty of deft touches here, but the music does not always flow” BBC Music Magazine, July 2014 ***

“There are good things in the faster numbers of Valses nobles and she manages to convey the vigour of the opening without becoming percussive...On the whole, Wagner is most convicing in the fast music; in slower numbers her rubato is arguably over-generous.” Gramophone Magazine, August 2014

The Rite of Spring

Contrasting pieces by two masters of orchestral composition, these live performances, from 2009, capture the energy and movement of three much-loved balletic works; Ravel's intricate vignettes of childrens' stories in 'Mother Goose' and symphonic poem 'La valse', and Stravinsky's epoch-defining 'Rite of Spring'.

One of the oldest professional orchestras in Russia, the St Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra can trace its lineage back to 1882 and its formation by Tsar Alexander III. In a 25-year collaboration, Yuri Temirkanov has been the orchestra's principal conductor since 1988.

Daphnis et Chloé - Suite No. 2

La Valse

Ma Mère l'Oye

After a highly successful debut with the London Symphony Orchestra in December 1927, John Barbirolli became the youngest ever conductor to direct a Royal Philharmonic Society concert – he was 29. He chose Debussy’s La Mer, which had not been played in London for ten years. The orchestra needed more time on the unfamiliar score, so Barbirolli paid for an extra rehearsal out of his own pocket; the cost was almost as much as his fee for the whole concert.

Barbirolli continued to serve French music with care and devotion for the rest of his life. At his last concert with the Hallé Orchestra in Manchester, in May 1970, he conducted Ravel’s Mother Goose suite. The Symphonie fantastique by Berlioz became a central work in Barbirolli’s repertoire. He conducted it at two important events in the Hallé’s history – the first concert given in the new Free Trade Hall, Manchester in 1951 and then two years later he conducted the work at the Hallé’s first ever Prom concert.

Barbirolli’s classic recording of Symphonie fantastique is now restored to the catalogue along side three pieces from Le Damnation de Faust. A bonus track includes a rehearsal sequence (Menuet des follets) from this recording session.
