Jeux d'enfants (Petite Suite), Op. 22

Fauré:

Dolly Suite, Op. 56

Ravel:

Ma Mère l'Oye

Claire Désert, Emmanuel Strosser (piano duet)

At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the artlessness, tenderness and magic of the child's world fascinated several French composers. In these sets of pieces for piano duet, each transports the listener to the land of dreams and takes a nostalgic look back to his own early life. With restful languor and penetrating timbre, Gabriel Fauré guides us into the intimate universe of the young 'Dolly' (1893-96). In 'Jeux d’enfants' (1871), Georges Bizet evokes juvenile joys with typically French finesse, poetry and clarity. In his 'Petite Suite' (1889), Claude Debussy offers four tableaux that so charmed listeners to his elegant, supple playing; and finally it is the turn of Maurice Ravel, with his passionate devotion to the theme of childhood, to tell us the tales of 'Ma mère l'Oye' (1908-10), thereby creating one of the most poetic and discreetly lyrical works of his time.

“There is a great deal to enjoy in the playing here: Desert and Strosser are a finely honed, highly disciplined team and I felt they came to life especially well in the more jaunty moments that punctuate the recording...Their articulation is enchantingly crisp...and in all these movements the duo employs a healthy amount of whimsy sustained by a nicely unified leggiero touch” International Record Review, May 2013

“The discovery here is Bizet's irresistable and witty Jeux d'enfants. Among suave performances, only Fauré's Dolly lacks some colour and depth to the sound.” BBC Music Magazine, July 2013 ***

“The two pianists sharing a piano stoool embody the best of the French tradition - crystalline tone, pristine fingerwork and clarity of thought - and they make a compelling partnership. Their reading of Faure's famous Dolly suite is utterly unsentimental and all the better for it.” Gramophone Magazine, July 2013

“Onslow’s melodies rise and fall in huge spans often driven from below by subtle shifts in harmony …Finely nuanced dynamics only adding to the already emotionally charged atmosphere…forget comparisons! This voice is worth hearing in its own right.” Early Music Review, August 2014

This collection brings together all the ballets by the two so-called Impressionistic composers, Ravel and Debussy, in recordings by Bernard Haitink.

Ravel’s masterpiece is the three act ballet Daphnis et Chloé, commissioned by Diaghilev, with Nijinsky dancing the lead role. Also included are La Valse, the orchestral version of Ma mère l'oye (Mother Goose) and two works inspired by Spain, Alborada del gracioso and Boléro – a work Ravel famously described as a “piece for orchestra without music”.

Debussy is represented by two masterpieces from both ends of his career: Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune, a turning point in the history of music that ushered in the modern harmonies of the 20th century, and converted into a sensational ballet by Nijinsky (L'après-midi d'un faune); Jeux was the composer’s last orchestral work and premiered just two weeks before The Rite of Spring.

Debussy:

La Mer

Ma Mère l'Oye

La Valse

Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, Myung-Whun Chung

Deutsche Grammophon presents internationally acclaimed conductor Myung-Whun Chung and his Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra with a new album. The orchestra is “a world-class ensemble” (Berliner Morgenpost) setting a new standard for orchestral music in Korea and regularly breaking records by playing for largely sold-out audiences.

The album includes Debussy’s La mer followed by two live recordings of Maurice Ravel’s Ma mère l'oye and La Valse.

“There's a wonderful sense of rhythmic movement and cohesion to Debussy's music, but at the expense of some detailing which I missed...on this showing of the French repertoire, at which [Chung] excels, the orchestra deserves its place on the world stage.” Classic FM Magazine, December 2011 ***

“The playing has precision and delicacy, showcased in the Mother Goose suite” Financial Times, 13th August 2011 **

“The aqueous glints and flecks of colour in Debussy's La mer are attractively caught in this performance...More than that, though, the playing conveys the surging atmosphere, the fluid movement and the awe-inspiring grandeur of 'De l'aube a midi sur la mer'...The Seoul orchestra's sonority is both ripe and alert to detail, Chung's direction judging the pace and the range of dynamics in the music with a sure sense of its ebb and flow.” Gramophone Magazine, November 2011

“in 2005 [the Seoul Philharmonic] declared its intent to reach world-class status. These three French showpieces demonstrate that, technically at least, it has attained that ambition. The playing is disciplined and beautifully blended. I am struck particularly by the beauty of the sound of the horn section.” Sunday Times, 21st August 2011 ****

“This programme of "symphonic sketches" by French Romantics offers a broad platform for the Seoul Philharmonic to demonstrate their impressive grasp of tone and texture...Debussy's "La Mer" is particularly well handled: highly impressionistic (a word the composer himself despised), it was cinematic before the term became commonplace” The Independent, 19th August 2011 ****

Igor Kipnis-Karen Kushner duo

Parnassus is proud to offer the debut recording of the Igor Kipnis-Karen Kushner duo, in an extended program of music for piano four hands recorded at concerts and studio broadcasts.

Since his debut in 1959, Igor Kipnis has become one of the world’s best-known harpsichordists, with more than fifty solo recordings in his discography. He has also performed and recorded on the antique fortepiano. Readers of the many magazines for which he has written will also know of his long-standing interest in romantic piano literature and its great performers.

In 1995, Kipnis heard Karen Kushner’s acclaimed recordings of the Chopin Mazurkas, released by Connoisseur Society. Shortly afterward the two met and expressed their admiration for each others’ playing. They made their debut as a performing Duo later that year, and have since performed in in more than a dozen states and in Europe and South America.

The recordings on the debut CD, entitled “Four Hands,” derive from these performances. The rare performance ofBrahms’s Liebeslieder Waltzes, Op. 52, in the composer’s own version for piano four hands without vocal soloists, was played in Pittsburgh in 1998 and recorded by WQED-FM. Schubert’s Divertissement à l’hongroise and Ravel’s Ma mère l’oye were recorded in 1997 by WQXR-FM in New York. The Ravel, recorded for the first time with the composer’s complete score, was the first music the Duo had performed together. Souvenirs de Beyreuth, a parodistic Wagner pastiche by Gabriel Fauré and André Messager, comes from the same WQXR concert .

Calimerio Soares’ Batuccata was written as an encore for the Duo to perform during a tour of Brazil. It was recorded on the Bösendorfer 275-SE Computer Grand, a system which records the position of each key 800 times per second and can thus reproduce the pianist’s individual tonal qualities. Finally, the Rialto Ripples by George Gershwin and Will Donaldson is recorded for the first time in an arrangement for piano four hands by Walden Hughes, in a performance from the Sundays at Four series at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. This CD, which was produced in collaboration with WMHT/WRHV-FM in Schenectady, New York, contains 76 minutes of music.

Piano Duo Thorson and Thurber: Ingryd Thorson (piano) & Julian Thurber (piano)

Ravel was a pianist, and the piano was central to his art. The piano was the instrument through which he discovered and expressed innovations in style, technique and expression. He composed at the piano, and, unsurprisingly, many of his orchestral works (Bolero being the exception) appeared in piano versions. Although his entire output is modest – around 60 works, he transcribed more than half of these works for 2 pianos, or piano duet.

Apart from the well known works, this 2cd set contains some little known pieces – Entre cloches of 1897 was only published in 1975, and was originally appended to the Haberna, now better known as the 3rd movement of Rapsodie espagnole. Frontispice for 2 pianos, 5 hands was written in 1918.

Ravel’s mother had died in 1917, and he was deeply attached to her. Her loss resulted in 3 years of musical silence, with the exception of Frontispice. It is a short and very experimental work published with a collection of philospohical war poetry by the Italian Ricciotto Canudo. It is a curiously evocative work, almost surreal.

“These performances from Denmark are all affectionate and notably intelligent and they are powerfully yet pleasingly recorded. The culmination of this set is a fine account of that terrifying masterpiece La valse. Recommended.” Gramophone Magazine, October 1988
