Sets and Costumes by ANNA VIEBROCK With „Alcina“ Jossi Wieler and Sergio Morabito show how modern Handel can be. The production is fascinating, definitive and full of eroticism. Helene Schneiderman is absolutely overwhelming as Ruggiero‘s fi ancée and the brilliant soprano Catherine Naglestad is more blissful than seductive. Directors Jossi Wieler and Sergio Morabito and conductor Alan Hacker rendered the baroque opera a fascinating masterpiece of sensuality and singing which fi lled the audience with enthusiasm at the premiere in Stuttgart. In the 1734-1735 season Handel published both “Ariodante” and “Alcina” for the Covent Garden Theatre. The libretti of the two operas illustrate episodes from Orlando furioso (1516/32) by Ludovico Ariosto (1474-1533). This marvellous epic poem, which makes free use of the handed-down images of the chivalrous world of medieval knights, was for several centuries the standard model for the genre of heroic-comic verse narrative as employed by Voltaire and Wieland and of which later echoes can be heard in the works of Byron, Musset and Pushkin. Set & Costumes by ANTHONY WARD Handel’s operas are now so thoroughly a part of modern musical life that you might think every major opera house welcomes them. But until November 2010, when it introduced an absorbing new production of Alcina, the Vienna Staatsoper resisted them, not having done a Baroque opera since Monteverdi’s Poppea in the 1960s. The present production boasted an all-star cast of Baroque specialists, a former director of the Royal Shakespeare Company – Adrian Noble, the highly-acclaimed conductor Marc Minkowski and his Les Musiciens du Louvre-Grenoble in the pit. Adrian Noble places his Alcina into a framework which begins in the magnifi cent ballroom of the Devonshire-House in London Piccadilly. The legendary Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire, stages a play in which she is acting together with her friends, a stage on the stage. Alcina is a great musical experience geared to the Baroque curiosity. Marc Minkowski revives Handel’s music in an outstanding way. BONUS: Behind the Scenes Sound Format: PCM Stereo, dts-HD Master Audio 5.1 Picture Format: 16:9 Resolution: 1080i FULL HD Subtitle Languages: DE, IT, GB, FR, ES, JP, Korean Running Time: 205 mins (Opera) + 21 mins (Bonus) Blu-ray Disc: 50 GB (Dual Layer) FSK: 0 “Adrian Noble's 2010 Vienna staging, to handsome designs by Anthony Ward, partially retains the magical ambience but as a setting within a setting...Noble extracts decent dramatic performances from all participants, even if they rarely achieve that sense of engagement such passionate material demands...The DVD features consistently high-quality music-making from Marc Minkowski and his French period-instrument band.” BBC Music Magazine, December 2011 *** “Conductor and orchestra are superb; so is Anja Harteros, who finds real depth in Alcina's passion for Ruggiero. After an effortful start in her opening aria, Veronia Cangemi is well on form in 'Credete al mio dolore'. Kristina Hammarström looks and sounds well as Bradamante” Gramophone Magazine, December 2011 “Harteros's willowy figure and terrically responsive facial features are huge assets for Alcina. Her warm lirico-spinto instrument boasts the necessary range and flexibility...Truly phenomenal is Alois Mühlbacher (Oberto), with spot-on intonation, excellent coloratura and a surprisingly colourful timbre. He's also adorable to watch...Marc Minkowski and his Musiciens du Louvre contribute terrific dramatic flair and, of course, technique and musicianship of the highest order” International Record Review, November 2011 “the balance between Mark Minkowski's Musiciens du Louvre and the singers is perfect...Anja Harteros is very moving as Alcina, especially in the long aria "Regina, sei tradita". Vesselina Kasarova is excellent as Ruggiero, though her acting and movements are a bit rigid.” MusicWeb International, May 2012 “an imaginative and colourful production from the Vienna State Opera, directed by former RSC boss Adrian Noble. Wittily staged as though it was an amateur theatrical entertainment mounted by Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, and her friends, it features a fabulous performance by soprano Anja Harteros in the title role”” The Telegraph, 2nd December 2011 | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

In 1959, West German Radio in Cologne (WDR) recorded a live performance of Alcina with two of the most exciting young singers of the day, both called in as replacements at the last minute. This was the only time that Joan Sutherland and Fritz Wunderlich sang together. The resulting recording – exceptional in its vocal virtuosity and style of performance – is now being released officially for the first time: an exceptional première for Handel Year 2009. This is an “authentic” performance, with the Cappella Coloniensis (founded by August Wenzinger) conducted by the 45-year-old Ferdinand Leitner playing original instruments. Other members of the distinguished cast include Norma Procter (Bradamante) and Thomas Hemsley (Melisso) , with Dutch diva Jeannette van Dijck in the role of Morgana and Italian tenor Nicola Monti as Oronte Alcina, one of Handel’s greatest “magic” operas based on Ariosto, is performed here in a reduced version that conveniently fits onto two CDs. Thanks especially to the artistry of Sutherland and Wunderlich, the full power of the opera comes through. CD booklet includes specially-commissioned article by Thomas Voigt that tells the story of the performance, synopsis, libretto in Italian, English and German, and rare photos from WDR archives and the Wunderlich Family Archive. “A distinguished performance with distinguished interpreters, truly worthy of Handel” Kölner Rheinzeitung (1959) “…Norma Procter's impressive Bradamante stands the test of time, and Sutherland's crystalline singing reminds us that she was an important Handelian champion.” Gramophone Magazine, May 2009 “Sutherland, sounding galactic and supernatural, stops you in your tracks with every utterance, while Wunderlich rages, swoons and finally abandons passion for reason in ways that break your heart. The remastering is tremendous, too.” The Guardian, 14th August 2009 ***** “Despite relatively numerous orchestral strings (and mono sound), this live concert broadcast anticipates many present-day approaches to staging Handel.” BBC Music Magazine, October 2009 **** | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

“It would be hard to devise a septet of soloists more stylish than those on the reissued EMI set, with Arleen Auger brilliant and warm-toned...Della Jones stands out in the breeches role of Ruggiero and Eiddwen Harrhy as Morgana is no less brilliant...Hickox underlines the contrasts of mood and speed, conveying the full range of emotion.” Penguin Guide, 2010 edition *** | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

Under baroque-pioneer conductor Alan Curtis, the sorceress Alcina bewitches as never before for Handel year 2009. Alan Curtis, lauded by Opera as “one of our finest conductors of Baroque opera,” illumines Handel’s masterpiece, Alcina, by casting, as heroine, the brilliant Joyce DiDonato. Since Alcina is historically dared by virtuosic sopranos like Sutherland and Battle, this innovative recording with a mezzo is a must-have not just for Alcina freaks but all who adore sensational vocalism. As Handel did in his time, Curtis arrays our era’s finest Baroque singers – such as Maite Beaumont and Karina Gauvin – in supporting roles around his star “This Alcina is polished and passionate, the standard of da capo ornamentation unsurpassed. The acoustical environment of this recording is near-perfect. Every detail can be clearly heard, in part because of the minimal instrumental resources Curtis employs and his keen sense of architecture and pacing of Handel's music. Technically, DiDonato is superb: her Alcina is a complex, feminine creature, vain and vindictive - listen to her spine-tingling performance of "Ombre pallide" and the recitative that precedes it in Act 2.” Gramophone Magazine, May 2009 “…mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato brings firebrand fioritura (vocal embellishment), impeccably naturalistic recitative and an inimitable everywoman pathos to the soprano title-role.” BBC Music Magazine, June 2009 *** “. Here Joyce DiDonato sings the marvellous title role with dramatic fire and unfailing musicality.
Her suitors Ruggiero (Maite Beaumont) and Bradamante (Sonia Prina) are well contrasted, and there’s a delightful Morgana from Karina Gauvin. The scholar-conductor Alan Curtis leads his band Il Complesso Barocco to play with careful elegance and the performance as a whole is refreshingly crisp and disciplined.” The Telegraph, 28th April 2009 **** “Joyce DiDonato takes the title role. Nothing about Alcina is quite what it seems, and here we have a mezzo singing a soprano's music with considerable finesse, but with occasional moments of telltale strain. This is also a performance of immense calculation, so that while we're aware of Alcina's allure, we're also continually questioning her emotional veracity...Karina Gauvin is to die for as Morgana, and Kobie van Rensburg is the best of all Orontes.” The Guardian, 10th April 2009 **** “Joyce DiDonato’s velvety, sensuous mezzo is a surprising choice for Handel’s majestically tormented sorceress, darker of voice than Sutherland, and she might have trouble with higher-lying phrases in the theatre. She rises magnificently to the challenges of Alcina’s great, wrenching scenes of despair and is preferable both to Sutherland’s droopy wordlessness and Fleming’s smoochy, Handel-on-Broadway solecisms. Maite Beaumont’s Ruggiero is in the Berganza class, while Karina Gauvin (Morgana), Sonia Prina (Bradamante), Kobie van Rensburg (Oronte) and Vito Priante (Melisso) bring character and impeccable stylistic credentials to the supporting roles. This is the must-have Alcina on disc.” Sunday Times, 22nd March 2009 **** “Handel's music is beyond magnificent and DiDonato's sorceress Alcina proves a triumph of dramatic fire. Karina Gauvin's Morgana suffers most beautifully; Maite Beaumont's hero Ruggiero less so. Yet no voice ruins the show, and Alan Curtis's Il Complesso Barocco creates orchestral beauty with every note.” The Times, 14th March 2009 **** “Alan Curtis clearly welcomed the chance to add this masterpiece to the gradually expanding list of Handel operas he has recorded with Il Complesso Barocco. This Alcina is polished and passionate, the standard of da capo ornamentation unsurpassed. The acoustical environment of this recording is near-perfect. Every detail can be clearly heard, in part because of the minimal instrumental resources Curtis employs and his keen sense of the architecture and pacing of Handel's music. Handel knew his singers' individual strengths and played to them. Curtis, too, knows how to coax the best from his singers. Joyce DiDonato, Maite Beaumont and Karina Gauvin have worked with him before and contribute vividly informed portrayals of the principal characters that stand comparison with the best performances on previous recordings. Technically, DiDonato is superb: her Alcina is a complex, feminine creature, vain and vindictive – listen to her spine-tingling performance of 'Ombre pallide' and the recitative that precedes it in Act 2. Beaumont is at ease in Carestini's role as Ruggiero – heroic when required (as in 'Bramo di trionfar', the discarded aria, originally in Act 1 scene 7, that Curtis reinstated) – and more than equal to the demands of the much-loved 'Verdi prati' (Act 2). Gauvin, her silk-clad Morgana fully as manipulative as Alcina, and Prina, the ever faithful Bradamante, each bring tremendous spirit and sensuousness to their roles. If Van Rensburg's Oronte wavers momentarily in Act 3, Priante's steadfast Melisso and Cherici's courageous Oberto show the way. This could well be the Alcina we've been waiting for.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 “[DiDonato is] dramatically very impressive, while Maite Beaumont is a strong Ruggiero and Karina Gauvin a seductive Morgana.” Penguin Guide, 2010 *** | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Handel Edition Volume 1 - Alcina and Orlando
Handel: | Alcina Renée Fleming (Alcina), Susan Graham (Ruggiero), Natalie Dessay (Morgana), Kathleen Kuhlmann (Bradamante), Timothy Robinson (Oronte), Juanita Lascarro (Oberto), Laurent Naouri (Melisso) Orlando Patricia Bardon (Orlando), Rosemary Joshua (Angelica), Hilary Summers (Medoro), Rose Mannion (Dorinda), Harry van der Kamp (Zoroastro) |
“Christie is very much concerned with a smooth and generally rich texture and with delicacy of rhythmic shaping. His management of the recitative could hardly be bettered and moments of urgency or of other kinds of emotional stress are tellingly handled. Sometimes he favours a rather sustained style in the arias, making the textures seem airless and heavy, and the lines within them too smooth. However, to set against it there's his exceptional delicacy of timing, his careful but always natural-sounding moulding of cadences and other critical moments in the score. Not many Handel interpreters show this kind of regard for such matters and it's a delight to hear Handel's music so lovingly nurtured; it also helps the singers to convey meaning. The cast is very strong. The title-role is taken by a mezzo, Patricia Bardon, who draws a firm and often slender line, with that gleam in her tone that can so enliven the impact of a lowish mezzo – the famous Mad Scene is magnificent. The Sleep Scene, with very sweet, soft-toned playing of the violettemarine, is lovely. Hilary Summers offers a very sensitively sung Medoro, pure and shapely in line. Harry van der Kamp makes a finely weighty Zoroastro, with plenty of resonance in his lower register; the last aria in particular is done in rousing fashion. As Angelica, Rosemary Joshua's musicianship comes through in her attractive phrasing and timing. Rosa Mannion's Dorinda is no less full of delights, catching the character to perfection. Hogwood's lighter orchestral textures are appealing but the refinement of detail in the newer set is equally admirable.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 “‘Alcina is among the finest of Handels operas. The fine Erato set was recorded live at the Paris Opera.
Christie too is masterly at avoiding any monotony in the long sequence of da capo arias, with the recitative superbly timed and reprises beautifully decorated. It is striking that the star singers here are not just brilliant in tackling elaborate passage-work and ornamentation, but are stylishly scrupulous in avoiding unwanted aspirates. Renée Fleming is in glorious voice as Alcina… Natalie dessay as Alcina’s sister, Morgana, relishes the
challenge…” Penguin Guide *** | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

A celebration of the pioneering early music label Archiv, offering 55CDs ranged across the label’s entire 66-year history. Beautiful presentation, original jacket sleeves and documentation to the customary high standards of the label. In more ways than one, 2013 will be an Archiv Produktion year. The beloved Silver Label – the “Early Music Studio of Deutsche Grammophon”, as it was called for many years – is being revived in a big way, both in frontline and catalogue. In early April 2013 an event in Berlin is being held to mark this relaunch. New albums from choral group Tenebrae, Anna Prohaska and Giuliano Carmignola are being released in the first quarter to coincide with this occasion. Simple, striking and strong: in gleaming silver with the large blue Archiv Logo embossed on all sides. A large onsert on the top and back of the box details contents and is illustrated with a packshot showing contents. Original Jackets: starting with the austere yellow covers of the 1940s and 1950s gradually giving way to the great historical illustrations and images that featured up to the 1990s, when artists at last began to make an appearance (there were no artist photos in the 1950s!) The 180-page full-colour book has articles by journalist Nicholas Anderson, and “memoirs” by former directors of Archiv, Prof. Andreas Holschneider and Dr. Peter Czornyj, and Executive Producer, Marita Prohmann. The book features many rare photos from Archiv recording sessions, as well as other memorabilia. |
