Beethoven’s sonatas for cello and piano span his entire creative life. The Op.5 sonatas date from the late 1790s and therefore are products of his early years as a virtuoso pianist and aspiring composer in Vienna, where he had settled after leaving his native Bonn.

The 3rd sonata Op.69 dates from the composer’s ‘middle period’, and is contemporary with the 4th and 5th Symphonies and the Razumovsky String Quartets. It is one of his greatest chamber compositions, a work of great beauty, full of surprises and seemingly limitless inventiveness.

The two sonatas of Op102 were composed at the beginning of Beethoven’s visionary ‘late period’ and rub shoulders with the last violin sonata, the piano sonatas Nos.27, 28 and 29 ’Hammerklavier’. Beethoven’s later fascination with the baroque fugue surfaces not only at the end of the ‘Hammerklavier’ but also in the finale of the 5th sonata, reaching its apex in the Grosse Fugue’ Op.133 a few years later.

These performances were recorded immediately after live performances at Wigmore Hall, the culmination of a tour of all 5 Sonatas and the Variations across the USA and the UK in conjunction with Texas-born, Ralph Kirschbaum's 70th birthday.

Following on from last year’s live recording of the Shostakovich cello concertos, this album sees Gautier return to the studio with his friend and recital partner of many years, Frank Braley, in a programme of Beethoven’s Sonatas for Cello and Piano. In addition the album includes Beethoven’s wonderful variations on three different themes – two on arias from Mozart’s opera Die Zauberflöte, and the other from Handel’s Judas Maccabaeus. This is the first new recording of the complete Beethoven cello works for some time and is a long-awaited release.

Gautier Capuçon has a firm reputation as a concerto soloist, recitalist and chamber musician. He is a regular performer with the Berlin Philharmonic, Concertgebouw Orchestra, London Symphony, Leipzig Gewandhaus, Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, Chicago Symphony, NHK Symphony, and at festivals such as Verbier and Lugano, and has won several awards at the ECHOS and the Victoires de la Musique.

Beethoven’s works for cello and piano were written between 1796 and 1815. He effectively created the sonata for cello, with an independent piano part, in his Op.5, intended for Jean-Louis Duport and dedicated to Frederick William II of Prussia. Like the delightful variations on themes by Handel and Mozart, they represent his first-period style, as Op.69 typifies the second. The two sublime Sonatas Op.102, for their part, already herald the unprecedented stylistic freedom of the composer’s final decade.

The personification of French elegance, Pierre Fournier (1906-1986) was without doubt from the gallery of great cellists amongst those being Casals, Rostropovich, Feuermann.

The programme featuring the Elgar and Dvorak concertos are familiar to Fournier devotees but these live performances from the WDR in Cologne have never been available before.

The Elgar is complimented by the participation of Hans Rosbaud, a formidable musician and conductor who made too few recordings. This is another live performance where the electricity before an audience is perceptibly greater than found in Fournier's 1966 studio account (11 years later than the Cologne recording) with Alfred Wallenstein.

The Dvorak conducted by the illustrious George Szell was taped after their studio recording a year before in 1961 and has that extra presence from a live performance. The WDR sound is exceptionally vivid.

The programme is completed by Beethoven's set of variations on themes from Mozart's Die Zauberflote, a comparative rarity in the Fournier discography.

“While this pairing of the Elgar and Dvorák Cello Concertos does not eclipse the famous Deutsche Grammophon recordings that Fournier made with the Berlin Philharmonic in the 1960s, it is still a testament to an artist who combined elegance and an eloquently phrased cello line with a profound understanding of style and expression...Even with the rather matt acoustics, Fournier's intensity, finesse and rich, mellow tone are all there as a reminder of the great musician he was.” The Telegraph, 9th August 2008
