Antonio Meneses (cello) & Menahem Pressler (piano) Beaux Arts Trio founder Menahem Pressler and fellow Beaux Arts cellist Antonio Meneses join forces on this special recording of Beethoven’s complete music for cello and piano. The 2-disc set is scheduled for release to coincide with the Beaux Arts Trio’s extensive farewell concert tour. Both artists are consummate chamber musicians and Mr. Meneses considers this recording collaboration to be a “dream come true.” Pressler and Meneses have been performing the complete cycle of sonatas around the world to the delight of audiences and critics alike. “Menahem Pressler and Antonio Meneses offer us a rare listening privilege, with playing that is at once intimate, conversational, reposeful, intelligent and, above all, simple in its musical intentions.” Gramophone Magazine, August 2008 “…a wonderful testament to the exemplary partnership that has developed between cellist Antonio Menses and pianist Menahem Pressler over the past decade.” BBC Music Magazine, Proms 2008 **** |

| | | Pierre Fournier
Beethoven: | 12 Variations on "Ein Mädchen oder Weibchen" for Cello and Piano, Op. 66 Recording: Funkhaus, Saal 2, WDR Cologne, 6 April 1957 Franz Holetschek (piano) | Dvorak: | Cello Concerto in B minor, Op. 104 Recording: Funkhaus, Saal 1, WDR Cologne, 16 November 1962 George Szell | Elgar: | Cello Concerto in E minor, Op. 85 Recording: Funkhaus, Saal 1, WDR Cologne, 7 March 1955 Hans Rosbaud |
Pierre Fournier (cello) Kölner Rundfunk-Sinfonie-Orchester The personification of French elegance, Pierre Fournier (1906-1986) was without doubt from the gallery of great cellists amongst those being Casals, Rostropovich, Feuermann. The programme featuring the Elgar and Dvorak concertos are familiar to Fournier devotees but these live performances from the WDR in Cologne have never been available before. The Elgar is complimented by the participation of Hans Rosbaud, a formidable musician and conductor who made too few recordings. This is another live performance where the electricity before an audience is perceptibly greater than found in Fournier's 1966 studio account (11 years later than the Cologne recording) with Alfred Wallenstein. The Dvorak conducted by the illustrious George Szell was taped after their studio recording a year before in 1961 and has that extra presence from a live performance. The WDR sound is exceptionally vivid. The programme is completed by Beethoven's set of variations on themes from Mozart's Die Zauberflote, a comparative rarity in the Fournier discography. “While this pairing of the Elgar and Dvorák Cello Concertos does not eclipse the famous Deutsche Grammophon recordings that Fournier made with the Berlin Philharmonic in the 1960s, it is still a testament to an artist who combined elegance and an eloquently phrased cello line with a profound understanding of style and expression...Even with the rather matt acoustics, Fournier's intensity, finesse and rich, mellow tone are all there as a reminder of the great musician he was.” The Telegraph, 9th August 2008 |

Anne Gastinel (cello) & François-Frédéric Guy (piano) “The phrases are finely drawn, with tone that is never inappropriately heavy or too powerfully sustained. The rhythms are poised, the articulation clear and crisp, and in the variation sets as well as in the early sonata there’s an element of wit and playfulness that’s an essential part of the young Beethoven.” (The Gramophone) | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |
