The Beloved and her Lover

National Chamber Choir of Ireland, Paul Hillier

One Day Fine is a sonic journey through the breadth of Irish choral music. This is a recording of compositions from very different eras, cultures and politics, all unified under the direction of the National Chamber Choir of Ireland's internationally acclaimed director, Paul Hillier.

The earliest work on the CD Laeta lux est hodierna comes from the 14th century, while the most recent is the witty Everything Is Ridiculous by young Irish composer Andrew Hamilton. Joining Hamilton in testament to the state of contemporary choral music in Ireland are adopted citizen Kevin Volans whose eponymous One Day Fine draws on the exuberant clicking vocal techniques of his native South Africa, and Ian Wilson. The latter's work The Beloved and her Lover uses traditional Irish sean-nós singing with soloist Iara Ó Lionáird and is as an intriguing counterpoint to Percy Grainger's wordless arrangement of The Derry Air.

The early twentieth century is represented by compositions from a trio of Anglo-Irish composers with the controlled, angular lament of This world's joie by Arnold Bax contrasting with the pastoral beauty of Moeran's Songs of Springtime and Stanford's Blue Bird.

One Day Fine marks the first recording collaboration between RTÉ lyric fm and the National Chamber Choir of Ireland. This CD is presented with funding from the Music Network/Arts Council Music Recording Scheme.

City Of Birmingham Symphony Chorus, Simon Halsey (director)

“…this latest album from the City of Birmingham Symphony Chorus mostly consists of the secular side of the post-Victorian English choral tradition, interspersed with several organ solos which are rousingly played by Thomas Trotter. …the singing is still distinguished by a high degree of accuracy in tuning, attack and unanimity of dynamic. These qualities are shown to their best advantage in the quasi-symphonic drama of Elgar's Great is the Lord, undoubtedly the highlight of the programme...” BBC Music Magazine, August 2006 ***

Five Mystical Songs

Worcester Cathedral Chamber Choir, Stephen Shellard

The second release on Regent from Worcester Cathedral Chamber Choir.

Released to celebrate the centenary of the first performance of Five Mystical Songs in the 1911 Three Choirs Festival at Worcester.

This disc frames that well-loved masterpiece by Vaughan Williams with works by Elgar, Parry, and Stanford, with some rarities including Elgar’s Memorial Ode for Queen Alexandra, and three settings of O salutaris hostia.

“Elgar's Memorial Ode for Queen Alexandra of 1932, practically unknown until its recent revival, emerges under Shellard's direction as much more than an exercise in nostalgia. Choir, conductor and organist also tease out turbulent emotions from below the elegiac surface of the same composer's The Spirit of the Lord is upon me.” Classic FM Magazine, November 2011 ***
