Martin Helmchen, in his 2011 Verbier Festival recital, presents a program of Bach, Liszt and Beethoven. The adaptability of his technique is on display, as he moves with ease from the incessant rhythm of a Bach dance, through the filigree of Liszt's virtuosic showpieces, to the dense counterpoint so typical of Beethoven's late works. An artist who ‘connects seriousness and wistfulness with success’, the audience is truly drawn in through his expressive playing and gesture, vividly captured in this DVD recording. Picture format DVD: NTSC 16:9 Sounds format DVD: PCM Stereo Region code: 0 Booklet notes: English, German, French Running time: 83 min “He penetrates [the Bach's] counterpoint with a cleansing unmannered beauty - wonderful food for both heart and mind. The focused purity of his artistry - no behavioural frills, no interpretative kinks - finds its match in the film's simple camerawork...[The Hammerklavier] is judiciously paced, ringingly assertive when the composer demands it, weighted with sorrow in the middle.” BBC Music Magazine, December 2012 **** | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Liszt: Via Crucis
'Via Crucis' is probably one of Franz Liszt's boldest and most original works. Its musical inspiration, which ranges from Gregorian chant to Lutheran chorales, is here expressed in extremely modern harmonies that are at times Wagnerian. The programme is completed with Liszt piano pieces on a religious theme, played by Jean-Claude Pennetier: 'Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen' and 'Pater Noster', written after the death of Liszt's daughter Blandine, and plainchant from the liturgy of Holy Week, one of the major sources of inspiration for 'Via Crucis'. Founded in 1996 the Estonian ensemble Vox Clamantis is conducted by Jaan-Eik Tulve. “A happy marriage of pungent Estonian choral singing and French pianism, as one of Liszt's most distinctive works is heard in the setting of plainchant and religiously inspired piano solos.” BBC Music Magazine, May 2013 **** “The two a cappella Gregorian chants are sung here with a rounded, disembodied sound, beautiful in its austerity and removed from constraints of time or space.” International Record Review, May 2013 |

| | | Liszt: Pieces for Organ
Pierre Labric (at the Cavaillé-Coll organ of St. Ouen Abbey, Rouen) Classmate of Pierre Cochereau at the Paris Conservatoire where they each obtained their premier accolades on the organ in 1948, Pierre Labric could have looked forward to a brilliant soloist’s career had it not been for his incurable modesty! These recordings made in 1973 & 1974 are released for the first time on CD and clearly demonstrate the pure artistry of Pierre Labric. “The snarling Cavaillé-Coll organ of St. Ouen Abbey, Rouen might have surprised even Liszt, but these are fiery performances of spectacular music played by the legendary yet elusive Pierre Labric.” BBC Music Magazine, January 2011 ***** | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |

| | | John Kitchen plays the Organ of the Usher Hall
The first recording of the newly refurbished Norman & Beard concert organ in Edinburgh's Usher Hall, built in 1914. In an eclectic selection of repertoire ranging from transcriptions of popular orchestral works to Liszt's tortuous Weinen, Klagen, internationally acclaimed organist John Kitchen demonstrates the instrument's sonic versatility and brilliance of tone. "Kitchen brings rhythmic swagger and élan…The great Edwardian, Elgar, is represented by the Larghetto from his Serenade for Strings, giving Kitchen the chance to demonstrate the organ's quasi-orchestral strings, before letting rip in the celebrated 'Nimrod' from Enigma Variations." London Evening Standard, May 2004 “Kitchen leaves no stone unturned in his search for colour, and reveals how close this type of instrument is to its cousin, the theatre organ. The Walton Popular Song and Hollins Triumphal March see the organ in its natural habitat and Kitchen's playing is instinctive and full of pizzazz.” BBC Music Magazine, November 2004 **** “Built in 1914, the monumental organ in the Usher Hall, Edinburgh has been restored to its former Edwardian glory. City Organist John Kitchen celebrates the aesthetic of that period. Three Handel marches are delivered in grand style, with irrepressible brio. Kitchen brings rhythmic swagger and élan to Hollins’ Triumphal March (complete with carillon), Walton’s Orb and Sceptre and Bach’s “St Anne” Prelude and Fugue.” Evening Standard “Alfred Hollins’s Triumphal March. Elgar’s Nimrod and marches by Handel are atmospherically rendered, and real expressive depth achieved in Bach’s monumental St Anne Fugue and Liszt’s Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen. Arrangements of Walton’s Popular Song (from Façade) and Orb and Sceptre march are delightfully contrasted.” Sunday Times, 19th April 2009 *** | | | Usually despatched in 3 - 4 working days. |
