Sung in Italian
Recorded at Teatro Comunale, Ferrara, January 2008
Motezuma is Vivaldi’s only opera set in the New World. The manuscripts for this rarely performed and rarely heard opera were only rediscovered in 2002 and currently only one CD version exists recorded by Alan Curtis and Il Complesso Barocco.
Of the CD recording, BBC Music Magazine wrote: “The instrumentalists of Il Complesso Barocco are on excellent form as indeed is Vivaldi himself in a rewarding score”.
Alan Curtis, one of the leading experts of Baroque music, returns again with the same orchestra, renowned Baroque specialist Vito Priante and another expert cast for the World Premiere Recording on DVD.

(World Premiere Recording)
Deutsche Grammophon/Archiv Produktion present the world premiere recording of the recently rediscovered opera Motezuma, one of Antonio Vivaldi’s most ambitious, colorful and exotic scores
The manuscript was rediscovered in 2002 among the archives of the Berliner Singakademie, which were lost after the war and returned to Berlin in 1999
The opera is loosely based on the conquest of Mexico by Hernán Cortés and the downfall of its former emperor Moctezuma (also “Montezuma”; there are a variety of theories as to why the librettist adopted “Motezuma”), though the libretto includes a fictive love story between Moctezuma’s daughter and Cortés’s brother
Editor, harpsichordist and conductor Alan Curtis – one of the leading experts of Baroque music – has assembled some of the finest baroque opera vocalists for this world premiere recording, among them Vito Priante, Marijana Mijanovic and Maite Beaumont.
Curtis was also a leader in editing and reconstructing the third of the music that was missing from the recovered manuscript
A rediscovered opera by one of the worlds most popular composers, first time on disc, featuring a carefully chosen cast of singers directed by a musical mastermind completely in his element – this recording is set to ignite the classical music scene
“…the exotic story concerns the Spanish conquest of Mexico and the defeat of its ruler Montezuma by the conquistador Fernando Cortez. Curtis has assembled a vocally accomplished cast. Montezuma, a bass role, is sung with resonant authority by Vito Priante while that of Mitrena, his wife, is projected with feminine charm by Marijana Mijanović... The instrumentalists of Il Complesso Barocco are on excellent form...” BBC Music Magazine, April 2006 ****
“Alan Curtis directs an assured and stylish performance, thoroughly convincing in its dramatic approach. The youngish cast give strong vocal accounts of themselves, with Maite Beaumont's hard-hearted Fernando standing out, and Inga Kalna, virtuosic as the Mexican general Asprano, also catching the ear. ...for sheer quality of music and performance it gives nothing but pleasure.” Gramophone Magazine, April 2006
“[Motezuma] is excellently performed by Vito Priante...with rich and robust tones...I found [Invernizzi's] high-quality singing expressive and impressively controlled with a subtle manner of enunciation...One of the special successes of the opera’s casting is Inga Kalna...The role of Asprano is a highly impressive achievement for this thrilling Latvian soprano...Vivaldi lovers will not want to be without this beautifully performed and recorded opera.” MusicWeb International, March 2006
