Emma Matthews – renowned as the finest Australian soprano of her generation – unveils her triumphant third album: Agony and Ecstasy.

Inspired by words from Verdi’s opera La Traviata, the album presents a rich and timeless journey through the many faces of love, drawing on opera that employed the power of music to bring alive experiences of the heart as never before.

Agony and Ecstasy opens with a joyful expression of young love by Juliet in Gounod’s Shakespeare-inspired opera: ‘I want to live in this heady dream forever!’ A new mood is introduced by the calculating determination of Rosina to win her lover in The Barber of Seville; the album closes with the poignant desperation of Elvira’s ‘mad scene’ in I Puritani, when she thinks herself abandoned. Between these, we witness some of opera’s most vivid characters as they grapple with love.

The eight arias – by Bellini, Rossini, Verdi, Donizetti and Gounod – were composed within sixty years of one another. Influenced by a Romantic desire to explore love and emotion, these composers were given the perfect vehicle by the bel canto compositional style, which prized both vocal fireworks and honest, heartfelt emotion.

Matthews has given acclaimed live performances of many of the roles on the album throughout a career that has taken in opera houses and concert halls across the globe. The presence of legendary conductor Richard Bonynge – husband of the late Dame Joan Sutherland and mentor to Matthews – is strongly felt: she first performed many of these operas with him, and in some cases the ornamentation was handed on directly from Maestro Bonynge.

Agony and Ecstasy was recorded with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra under the baton of conductor Andrea Molino by ARIA-Award-winning Tonmeister Virginia Read.

Beginning in 1961, Georg Solti enjoyed a ten-year tenure as Music Director of London’s Covent Garden Opera Company, where he raised performance standards while giving British singers more prominence than ever before. These changes were not lost on Buckingham Palace, and in 1968, Covent Garden earned the right to be renamed ‘The Royal Opera’. With its orchestra he made some of his – and posterity’s – most thrilling recordings, cherished by music-lovers and audiophiles the world over. The 1960 recording of the ballet music from Faust was issued first as a 45rpm disc and later as a coupling to the Offenbach-Rosenthal Gaîte Parisienne, surely the very definition of the fabled ‘Decca Sound’ (it appears on Decca Eloquence 480 6589). The pieces by Verdi, Rossini, Offenbach and Ponchielli were originally issued by RCA in 1959 (in England) and 1960 (in the USA) and in the 1970s on Decca when the recordings repatriated to them.

Built in an extravagant Gothic style, Rochdale Town Hall is one of the most impressive examples of the civic pride of the Victorian and Edwardian eras. Positioned within is J.J. Binns’ fine organ, proudly displayed in three beautifully crafted wooden cases. At its high point, the British town hall organ tradition represented something entirely new and extraordinary, in social, mechanical, aesthetic and commercial terms; and the transcriptions made for these colossal instruments demonstrate remarkable syntheses of ingenuity, skill and ambition on the part of both organ-builders and musical arrangers. Here, following up on his celebrated 2004 exploration of orchestral overtures at the organ of the Kelvingrove Gallery in Glasgow, Timothy Byram-Wigfield offers another recital of overture transcriptions, and an ideal combination of player, music and instrument.

“Byram-Wigfield takes all in his unflappable stride, the opening carefully layered, the control scrupulous throughout, though almost to a fault when the sheer lucidity refuses to surrender to the heat of the moment…deftly characterised, well recorded and with lively liner notes by Byram-Wigfield himself, this is altogether a tantalising testament to the transcriber's art.” BBC Music Magazine, April 2016 ***

“An entire disc of overtures is a bit like enjoying a 7-course tasting menu, and here the results are well worth savouring... a tour de force.” Choir & Organ, March 2016 *****

“What makes this recital particularly appealing is the clarity of texture with which the Rochdale organ is captured…[the instrument] offers all the orchestral colours and dynamics you could wish for in this repertoire, no details of which are lost…apart from Byram-Wigfield's virtuosity and fluent registrations, there are the further bonuses of his own transcription of the Prelude to Act 1 of La traviata…and the rarity of Spohr's Overture to his 1823 opera Jessonda” Gramophone Magazine, April 2016

Special appearance by Roberto Bolle

In 2013 Sir John Eliot Gardiner made his second appearance as conductor of the traditional New Year’s Concert in the traditionrich Gran Teatro La Fenice di Venezia – together with La Scala in Milan and San Carlo in Naples one of Italy’s most famous opera houses. Traditionally, the popular Concerti di Capodanno not only bring in the New Year musically, but also mark the opening of the new opera season which in Venice, contrary to general custom, begins with the calendar year. At the same time they give the opera house’s resident ensemble, the Orchestra e Coro del Teatro La Fenice, a perfect opportunity to show off their musical prowess. On the programme of the 2013 concert, in addition, of course, to brilliant gems from the work of this year’s bicentenarian Giuseppe

Verdi, was Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Second Symphony in C minor, Opus 17 – a relatively rarely performed piece that is undeservedly overshadowed by the Russian romantic’s last three works in that genre. The fiery galop from Gioachino Rossini’s French opera Le siège de Corinthe rounded off the program, in which Italian soprano Desirée Rancatore and Albanian tenor Saimir Pirgu took over the Verdi arias – amongst them Violetta’s “Sempre libera” and of course the brindisi “Libiamo ne‘ lieti calici” from La Traviata.

During the 1950s, 60s and 70s, Decca recorded a number of albums with some of its key conductors of Overtures. Many of these were singled out by the press for their terrific sound quality (the fabled ‘Decca Sound’) and for their often adventurous programming. Some of them also included entr’actes and intermezzi. Prized as collectors’ items, many of the original LPs exchange hands at high prices. And most of these reissues, in Decca Eloquence’s ‘Romantic Overtures’ series appear in CD, in part or whole, for the first time.

Romantic Overtures – Volume 2 showcases the artistry of Piero Gamba, who conducted showpieces for Decca and partnered, among others, Ruggiero Ricci as well as Julius Katchen in his magnificent cycle of the Beethoven Concertos. This 2CD set includes his very first recording for Decca, of Rossini Overtures (1955). Five years later recorded another LP of Rossini Overtures, the only common item being William Tell (the stereo recording is truly thrilling, the record as a whole one of Decca’s best kept secrets!). Both recordings are included here (and both recordings of William Tell). The Egmont Overture was originally coupled with Katchen’s recording of Beethoven’s Fifth Piano Concerto; and also included is all of the LP entitled ‘Adventures in Sound’ which included overtures and intermezzi by Verdi, Mascagni, Mancinelli, Martucci and Ponchielli. A real rarity is Stanley Black’s Overture to a Costume Comedy, recorded at the 1957 ‘Adventures in Sound’ sessions, but only included on a 45rpm EP in mono. This is its first release on CD and in stereo.

“Performances throughout are good … well recorded” Gramophone Magazine (Adventures in Sound)

“The LSO supports Gamba brilliantly … a natural sound, clear and with a well-defined bass” Gramophone Magazine (Rossini: 1955)

“La gazza ladra: the battery guaranteed to batter one through the back of one’s chair … The allegros are very fast indeed [and] one is open-mouthed to find that the LSO wind players still manage to phrase with their natural artistry and the violins at the opening of the allegro in Semiramide have all their repeated notes exactly together … Gamba’s Rossini crescendos are all superbly controlled, and with the vivid stereo recording I cannot imagine anyone failing to find this disc very exciting.” Gramophone Magazine (Rossini: 1960)
