Danse - Tarantelle styrienne

Angela Hewitt’s previous forays into the French repertoire have been praised for their ‘tenderness, Gallic wit, verve, and—the most important ingredient of all—charm’. These qualities are very much to the fore in this new disc of Debussy featuring some of the composer’s most sunlit, delightful and popular works.

Children’s Corner was written for Debussy’s beloved daughter (though not, as Hewitt explains, for her to play immediately). Hewitt embraces the music’s wit, artful references and gentle beauty. The atmospheric Suite bergamasque includes the famous ‘Clair de lune’. Also included are the tragic Masques and gorgeously exuberant L’isle joyeuse. Hewitt and Debussy are a perfect match.

“Hewitt’s spectrum of touch, her fluency and sense of colour are deployed with equal enchantment in the first of the two arabesques, her lightness, rhythmic precision and varieties of tonal weight making the second arabesque into a glistening, fanciful filigree...Hewitt brilliantly and sensitively points up the traits that lend the music such distinctive character and evocative presence, not least in an account of “L’Isle joyeuse” that is pure, ravishing radiance.” The Telegraph, 5th October 2012 *****

“There's not a trace of the "impressionistic" about her treatment of any of them: this is Debussy portrayed in clean, bright colours and sharply focused detail, with every rhythm precisely etched...it's undeniably high-class playing, even when you don't agree with some of its details.” The Guardian, 4th October 2012 ****

“This is one of the better offerings for Debussy's 150th anniversary...This generously filled disc finds Hewitt utterly persuasive in the three suites at its heart...Hyperion caputres the sound marvellously. Hewitt has the knack of noticing details without letting them detract from the musical flow...Special mention should be made of 'Clair de lune': it is quite an achievement for its lyrical beauty to be heard afresh.” BBC Music Magazine, December 2012 *****

“Hewitt has put together an ideal introduction to Debussy, but it’s one that can be enjoyed equally by experienced listeners – thanks to the artless touch and precise colours the Canadian pianist brings to each piece.” Financial Times, 27th October 2012 ****

Marche Écossaise

La plus que lente

The music of three nations – Britain, Spain and France – inspired Debussy’s Images for orchestra, which occupied him from 1905 to 1912.

Originally conceived for two pianos (Images I and II for solo piano are on 8.550253), this third set draws on several folk songs in its outer movements, the tripartite middle movement evoking in musical terms Spanish sights, sounds and fragrances.

Vivid orchestrations by both Debussy and Ravel of short piano pieces likewise embrace contrasting moods and national characters.

Volumes 1 (8570759) and 2 (8570993) in this series have been highly praised.

“Jun Märkl persuades his orchestra to extremes of vulgarity and tenderness, which is as it should be in the extraordinary Images. They also catch the ambivalence of mood that marks these pieces...there is much here to enjoy.” BBC Music Magazine, June 2010 ****

“In Jun Märkl’s expert hands one can immediately sense Debussy…[Märkl] magically evokes iridescent textures from which points of sound emerge like piquant sources of light on a canvas. A captivating performance enhanced by four bonus orchestrations.” Classic FM Magazine

This volume of Debussy’s dramatic works and ballet music is dedicated, by and large, to ‘rarities’ by the composer. Few of Debussy’s works have divided critical opinion more than Le Martyre de Saint Sébastien, banned as it was by the Archbishop of Paris six days before its premiere. The beautiful, rarefied Six Épigraphes Antiques were orchestrated by Ernest Ansermet himself and both the Egyptian-based Khamma and La Boîte à joujoux, a ballet based on the secret life of toys, are very rare indeed. Trifle though it might be, the Marche écossaise receives its first release on CD – significant, given the conductor recorded it only once.

“Where Bavouzet breaks out into blazing Mediterranean sunlight, Rogé is happy to withdraw into shadow-land. Time and again his playing suggests emotion recollected in tranquillity rather than turmoil;… "Poissons d'or" is a marvellous distillation of indolence and flashing disruption.” Gramophone Magazine, July 2008

One of Riccardo Chailly's first recordings with the Concertgebouw, reissued at super-budget price and marking the conductor's glorious tenure with this magnificent orchestra, this disc provides a fascinating picture of Ravel the Orchestrator. For those after thrilling recordings of Bolero and Pictures at an Exhibition this is a self-recommending recording, but the rare gems by Debussy will also provide much delight.

“this is one of Decca's ripely brilliant Concertgebouw recordings, very full and powerful, and that comes out strikingly in the Mussorgsky” Gramophone Magazine

Images oubliées (3) for piano

Jacopo Salvatori (piano)

This album contains a number of short pieces, most of which were written by the author during the first years of his career. Debussy’s way of writing for piano at this early stage is less articulated yet it contains a certain degree of complexity in his inner structures which indicates how the author had already taken his own path. The choice of subject for his pieces as well as the way he presents his ideas also show a stronger connection with the traditional repertoire: the most interesting example here is the suite Images Oubliées, literally a first version of Pour le piano, where he sketched ideas, which will later appear in his most important works, using and combining them in a less brilliant way. As an example, in the first movement one can clearly hear similarities to Jardins sous la pluje and the first piece of Pour le piano. The structure of a three pieces suite with an “animato" first movement, a sarabanda-like slow piece and a fast ending movement appears here for the first time; it will later develop into Estampes and Images. It is interesting to notice that the second movement here is the same piece as in Pour le piano but with some slight harmonic differences. Among these early pieces there are some other short works, written in the style of his latter pieces, which for various reasons did not fit into the two series of Préludes, but which are nevertheless interesting pieces of music.
