Ivo Pogorelich plays Beethoven, Chopin & Schumann

Ivo Pogorelich plays Beethoven, Chopin & Schumann

Beethoven:

Piano Sonata No. 32 in C minor, Op. 111

Chopin:

Nocturne No. 16 in E flat major, Op. 55 No. 2

Étude Op. 10 No. 8 in F major

Étude Op. 10 No. 10 in A flat major

Étude Op. 25 No. 6 in G sharp minor

Schumann:

Études symphoniques, Op. 13

Toccata in C major, Op. 7

When Ivo Pogorelich was not admitted to the final round at the 1980 Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw, Martha Argerich resigned from the jury in protest, thereby catapulting the young pianist to immediate worldwide fame.

This new coupling presents part of the debut album of works by Chopin that he recorded shortly afterwards - its centrepiece, the B flat minor Sonata, has already been released on 4636782 in The Originals series - together with his entire second album, which immediately courted controversy with its provocative juxtaposition of Beethoven's timeless mature masterpiece with two of Schumann's most spectacularly virtuoso creations.

"The brilliance, the daring the lofty role-playing in the Schumann, and the many unignorable moments of a rapt and surprising introspection are a sufficient lure [...] Pogorelich's love of the energy and beauty of Beethoven's music is wise enough, vividly and limpidly purveyed" Richard Osborne, Gramophone, October 1983

"[The Beethoven is] quite fascinating for the clarity of execution, every note scrupulously placed, timed and nuanced. The Schumann is, on the whole, probably the most completely sensitive, literally the most appreciative, reading of the work that I can remember." William Mann, The Times Preview, 12.2.1982

Andrea Kauten plays Schumann

Schumann:

Piano Sonata No. 3 in F minor, Op. 14 'Concerto Without Orchestra'

Études symphoniques, Op. 13

Novelette, Op. 21 No. 1 in F major

Novelette, Op. 21 No. 2 in D major

Andrea Kauten (piano)

Swiss pianist Andrea Kauten’s second recording for Sony Classical is of works by Schumann, whose bicentenary will be celebrated in 2010. It includes the Sonata No.3 which Schumann wrote for his wife, Clara.

“…Kauten leaves you in no doubt of her commitment and intensity. Kauten completes her recital with the first two of the Novelletten, finding all of the troubled ecstasy at the heart of the No 2 and playing with an emotionalism very much her own.” Gramophone Magazine, September 2009

“Rich-toned and generous with rubato, hers is almost an old-fashioned approach, but the finesse with which she meets all the technical and music challenges in the sometimes awkward F minor Sonata suggests a keenly incisive mind behind it.” The Guardian, 25th September 2009 ****

Schumann:

Fantasie in C major, Op. 17

Études symphoniques, Op. 13

“Brendel's thoughtful approach to the Fantasie is underpinned by his huge technical resources. The result is unforgettable listening; and the impulsive and wide-ranging Etudes symphoniques are brilliantly drawn together.” BBC Music Magazine, April 2009 *****

Brahms: Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel, Op. 24, etc.

Brahms:

Variations and Fugue on a Theme by Handel, Op. 24

Variations on a theme by Paganini in A minor, Op. 35

Schumann:

Études symphoniques, Op. 13

Julius Katchen, that colossus that bestrode the pianistic firmament for all too short a time, recorded the Brahms Handel and Paganini Variations three times, twice in mono and once in stereo. Surprisingly, these much-praised 1958 recordings have never before been issued on CD and are now being made available singly, on Eloquence as well as part of an 8CD 'Original Masters' tribute Decca box. All of Katchen's dare-devilry in the Paganini set comes to the fore. The coupling, Schumann's Etudes symphoniques, likewise also receives its CD debut.

Études symphoniques, Op. 13

Incl Appendix

One of Jean-Yves Thibaudet's early Decca recitals, these are some of the most engaging and thrilling readings of a program of essentially concert etudes. To the Schumann, Thibaudet places the five posthumous variations as an appendix, and his reading of the Brahms Paganini is one of the most scintillating of all.

“Predictably the technical challenges of Brahms's Paganini Variations hold few fears for him. Even Horowitz once admitted that in Liszt's Faust Waltz he'd heard Thibaudet's fingers do things that his own couldn't in dexterity, clarity of articulation and general command... his fingers sing as finely as they sparkle... Sound reproduction throughout is at once natural and never too forward for comfort in your own room” Gramophone Magazine
