John Carol Case (baritone)

Melos Ensemble of London

When these recordings were made (in the 1960s), Schoenberg's music was comparatively rare on record. It represented, then, the typical daring of both, this ensemble, and of the L'Oiseau-Lyre label for which it was originally recorded. In the extended Schoenberg Serenade, the ensemble was joined for one of the movements by baritone John Carol Case. All recordings are released on CD for the first time.

"(Berg) They are played with exactly the right poise and sensitivity..." Gramophone.

“The performance [of the Serenade] here emerges superbly on this, its first appearance on CD. Indeed, it is nothing less than dazzling in its sharply vivid brilliance, and it does much to help one accept the argument. John Carol Case does wonders with the cruel vocal line.” Penguin Guide, 2011 edition

Orchestra of Domaine musical, Orchester de Südwestrundfunks de Baden-Baden, Pierre Boulez, Hans Rosbaud

“…in the throes of his love-hate relationship with Schoenberg, Pierre Boulez directs pugnacious accounts of the Serenade and Suite and a high-pressure First Chamber Symphony. An intense Verklärte Nacht is still among the finest, and if Pierrot lunaire can yield more expressive light and shade, the recitation of Helga Pilarczyk has lost little in immediacy. Webern was of especial importance to Boulez at this time: performances of the Symphony and Cantatas have an eloquent poise, while Yvonne Loriod maps out emotional tension in the Variations with an unerring rightness and largely eschews rhetoric in Berg's Sonata.” Gramophone Magazine, September 2006
