Russian National Orchestra, Carlo Ponti Jr These well known pieces are presented in superb SACD sound. Carlo Ponti Jr. is the son of Carlo Ponti Sr. and Sophia Loren and is a regular conductor of the Russian National Orchestra. “Carlo Ponti…brings out the Russian-ness of Mussorgsky's inspiration with each of the pictures sharply characterised… The wind solos are specially impressive, as is the horn descant in the "Great Gate of Kiev". In short, an excellent version of a much-recorded showpiece. Night on the Bare Mountain comes in the highly unauthentic but undeniably effective Rimsky version, brilliantly played here with powerful bite.” Gramophone Magazine, June 2009 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, Zdenek Macal Most newsworthy to many listeners is the headliner on this disc: Macal's presentation of The Dream of the Peasant Gritzko in its first appearance on CD. This hair-raising choral-orchestral version of Night on Bald Mountain, in which Macal and his New Jersey Symphony are joined by the Westminster Symphonic Choir, is a virtuosic tour-de-force for all concerned. In this verson the listener is face-to-face with Mussorgsky's original concept of this music as it was inserted in his unfinished opera, Fair at Sorochinsky. Demonic choral outbursts (sung by Westminster with ferocity and abandon), a bass solo for the satanic leader, strange and exotic harmonic combinations in the orchestration (played with elan and precision by the New Jersey Symphony), all display Mussorgsky's unique vision. | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |
