The acclaimed Polish period band Arte dei Suonatori perform eight of Vivaldi’s concertos a Quattro. Their version of Handel’s 12 Concerto grossi Op. 6 was awarded ‘Orchestral Choice of the Month’ in BBC Music Magazine, alongside further critical acclaim from the international music press. As well as being a major composer in the formation of the solo concerto, he also was the leading exponent of the older concerto a quattro – music in four parts, with several players to a part. His works in this genre are notable not only for their beauty, but also for their experimental character and for providing the most important examples of fugal writing in Vivaldi’s instrumental music. This recording includes eight of the concertos, as well as the Sinfonia from the serenata La Senna festeggiante (The Rejoicing Seine) composed in honour of the young French king Louis XV, and the Sonata a 4 in E flat major ‘Al Santo Sepolcro’. | | | (also available to download from $10.75) | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Vivaldi - 8 Concerti Solenni
Enrico Casazza (violin & director) La Magnifica Comunita (on original instruments) It is remarkable that concertos by Vivaldi are still awaiting their first recordings, and this CD programmes 8 ‘solemn’ concertos. Solemn in this context usually meant a slow introduction, acting as a prelude to the following 3 movements. Vivaldi was a master at creating concertos from other works, and these were known as ‘pasticcio’ concertos. For example, sinfonias or overtures to his many operas provided a happy hunting ground for such concertos, and on this CD the concertos are a mix of Vivaldi’s pasticcios and those of the Pablo Queipo de Llano, a Vivaldi scholar and author the comprehensive CD booklet essay. To illustrate how adept Vivaldi was at turning existing works to new uses, the finale of RV197 was originally the double fugue from the overture to the serenata La senna festeggiante RV693. This had in turn been adapted by Vivaldi from the closing section of Lotti’s Moralita d’una perla. The opening movement of RV155 was reused by Vivaldi for his Salve Regina RV618 The tradition of pasticcio concertos arranged from other composer’s works was common practice at the Dresden court, where the director was Johann Georg Pisendal, a pupil of Vivaldi. Many movements by Vivaldi were found among the manuscripts in Dresden, and form the basis for these reconstructions. Period instrument performances. Extensive booklet note by the editor of the concertos. New recording made in 2009 in Venice. | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Vivaldi: Concertos for Strings
Antonio Vivaldi (1678 – 1741) was a musical genius and shone at his brightest when writing for strings. His ever-popular Four Seasons aside, there are countless other extraordinary concertos that Vivaldi wrote for strings. This recording, a re-release dating from 1992, presents no fewer than nine concertos: two featuring solo cello; one for solo violin and cello; one for two violins and two cellos; one for four violins; and finally four for string orchestra without soloists. Extraordinary repertoire demands extraordinary performances and those from our orchestra and guests are second to none. | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

| | | The Rise of the North Italian Violin Concerto 1690–1740Volume Two: Antonio Vivaldi – Virtuoso Impresario
Vivaldi: | Concerto for violin, strings & continuo in Bb, RV370 Arias for soprano, strings & continuo from La costanza trionfante degl’amori e de gl’odii, RV706 Mhairi Lawson (soprano) Concerto for violin, 2 violoncellos, strings & continuo in C, RV561 Concerto for strings in E minor, RV 134 Concerto senza cantin for violin, strings & continuo in D minor, RV243 Arias for soprano, strings & continuo from La fida ninfa, RV714 Mhairi Lawson (soprano) Concerto for violin, strings & continuo in Eb, RV254 |
Antonio Vivaldi was famously both a virtuoso performer and an impresario. The same can be said of Adrian Chandler, whose passionate advocacy has associated him with the Red Priest’s music like no other. Following last autumn’s release of The Rise of the North Italian Violin Concerto 1690–1740, Volume One: The Dawn of the Virtuoso (AV 2106), which earned Chandler and his ensemble La Serenissima an Editor’s Choice from Gramophone magazine, Avie offers the second in a three-volume series exploring the development of the violin and growing demand for virtuoso repertoire during the Italian baroque era, of which Vivaldi was undisputedly the zenith. Mirroring the highly successful format of Volume One, Chandler intersperses dazzling concerti with contemporaneous vocal works, illuminating these genres’ effects on each other in Vivaldi’s oeuvre. If Chandler’s thorough research is a multi-faceted crystal, his performances are the rainbow-hued shaft of light brightly shining through. Recorded 4 – 7 March 2007 at The Warehouse, Studio 1, London “…this is music brimming with ideas… All are played with La Serenissima's customary bright energy and enthusiasm, to which qualities are here added considerable subtlety of detail: listen to the way Chandler picks his way intelligently through the changing textural landscape of the first movement of RV243. Indeed, his playing throughout shows a smooth but vital tone, a fundamental likeability of sound and manner which is matched by soprano Mhairi Lawson in her five contrasted arias...” Gramophone Magazine, October 2007 “Adrian Chandler… is given sensitive support by his string and continuo players among which the audible presence of a theorbo is welcome. Soprano Mhairi Lawson highlights the affective contrasts of the arias with tonal warmth and requisite virtuosity. In summary, an excellent disc.” BBC Music Magazine, August 2007 ***** “'Antonio Vivaldi: Virtuoso Impresario' examines links between Vivaldi's concertos and operas. Thus, the Concerto RV370 has origins partly in the opera Ottone in villa, RV134 was probably once the sinfonia to an oratorio, and RV254 shows signs of having started out life as an entr'acte. It should be said that the links are sometimes tenuous, but who could complain when the snippets of minutely detailed information which Adrian Chandler clearly commands encourage mixed programming so refreshingly different from the Vivaldian norm? It may not always bring us the Red Priest at his most inspired but it certainly shows a few sides to him that we do not always see – enough to confound daft comments about his lack of variety. For this is music brimming with ideas, from the unusual accompanimental texture of the slow movement of RV561, to the E-string-less experiment of RV243 (and the strange, off-beam harmonies of its slow movement), to RV134's excellent fugue. All are played with La Serenissima's customary bright energy and enthusiasm, to which qualities are here added considerable subtlety of detail: listen to the way Chandler picks his way intelligently through the changing textural landscape of the first movement of RV243. Indeed, his playing throughout shows a smooth but vital tone, a fundamental likeability of sound and manner which is matched by soprano Mhairi Lawson in her five contrasted arias, all relative rarities dispatched with no-nonsense skill and aplomb. Here is further proof from this young British group that the Italian orchestras need not think to have Vivaldi to themselves just yet.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |

| | | Vivaldi - String Concertos Volume 3
“This third volume of Collegium Musicum 90's survey of Vivaldi's string concertos offers a varied selection of works which bears testament to their composer's untiring imagination. Vivaldi composed more than 40 of these sparky little miniatures, united by an (almost) uniform adoption of a three-movement format and by the lack anywhere of any kind of soloist; for this reason they're also sometimes known either as 'concertos for orchestra' or 'ripieno concertos'. None lasts longer than eight minutes, and most come in under five. CM90 perform with accomplished ease, attempting nothing outrageous but maintaining a relaxed bonhomie and clear-cut eloquence entirely suited to the music's modest aspirations. Theirs isn't the taut Vivaldi sound we have become used to hearing from other ensembles, but they have no difficulty serving up lyrical sweetness or joyous energy as required. Realistically and lucidly recorded, the disc leaves little to be desired.” Gramophone Classical Music Guide, 2010 | | | (also available to download from $10.75) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days.
