Christopher Herrick’s acclaimed series of Buxtehude’s Complete Organ Works reaches a fifth and final volume. Here he returns to the composer’s (disputed) home country of Denmark, and the organ of Mariager Klosterkirke. Highlights include the magnificent Praeludium in C major, BuxWV137 (known to English-speaking organists as the ‘Prelude, Fugue and Chaconne in C’) and the Chorale Fantasia on the Christmas melody ‘Gelobet seist du, Jesu Christ’, BuxWV188—among the longest and most elaborate of Buxtehude’s chorale settings. “Outstanding competition and the revisiting of material must in no way prove a barrier to anyone with even a vague interest in Buxtehude's organ music, for this is a simply splendid disc...Above all, of course, is Herrick's immensely enjoyable playing...Big Preludiae are delivered with grace and style, majestic rather than aggressive. All in all a delight to the ears which brings a smile to the face and a lift to the soul.” Gramophone Magazine, April 2013 “even the merest pieces speak volumes about the composer's imagination, virtuosity and originality...Herrick was almost seventy when this recording was made...Yet his fingers, feet and musical intelligence remain as nimble and sure as ever...this set ought to be the primary destination for collectors.” MusicWeb International, January 2013 |

Ton Koopman (The Bielfeldt organ (1736), St. Wilhadi, Stade, Germany) This is the tenth recording in the outstanding series of the complete works of Dieterich Buxtehude by Ton Koopman and the fifth and final part of the organ works. It presents a selection which contains the remainder of Buxtehude’s organ works of the two major categories, free and chorale-based compositions, alongside the complete organ works of Nicolaus Bruhns (1665-1697). Bruhns was Buxtehude’s most gifted pupil and was an important figure in the development of Buxtehude’s style of composition. Buxtehude’s organ works are his most significant contribution to the history of music. They consist of a comprehensive body of 90 compositions, of which more than half are chorale settings. The organ featured on this 2-CD set is one of only two surviving organs by Erasmus Bielfeldt and has been restored on the basis of the great organ building art of the baroque in 1990 by Ahrend. Ton Koopman is one of the world’s foremost early music keyboard specialists and directors. His recording of the complete Bach Cantatas received worldwide acclaim. He is president of the International Dieterich Buxtehude Society and one of the world’s leading authorities on his music. “For those new to Buxtehude's organ works both the programming and the instrument make these discs the ideal hopping on point. Plaintive chorale elaborations supply contemplative respite from the full-on brilliance of the praeludia, and Koopman's effortless authority and quicksilver articulation illuminate throughout.” BBC Music Magazine, August 2009 **** “The recording's sound stage has a clear sense of depth and breadth. Majestic, rotund climaxes are handled as adeptly as the smaller-scale manuals-only passages. Tonal combinations are constantly refreshed. The hurdy-gurdy effect in the chorale prelude Von Gott will ich nicht lassen is especially engaging.” Gramophone Magazine, September 2009 | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |

Julia Brown (Martin Pasi Organ, Saint Cecilia Cathedral, Omaha, Nebraska) “The lion's share of Naxos's ongoing Buxtehude series has fallen to Julia Brown whose ace is the marvellous new Pasi instrument in St Cecilia's Omaha. Compared to Koopman's 'bling' her playing is disciplined and overly stylish.” BBC Music Magazine, February 2008 *** | | | (also available to download from $6.00) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days.
