Listeners will venture into unusual realms of sonic imagination by virtue of the daring experiments in melody, harmony, counterpoint, and other musical elements heard in these 16th- and 17th-century works. “The performers have gone to great lengths to achieve an authentic sound. Racehl Barton Pine plays a late-Renaissance era fiddle rather than a Baroque violin...But what really seizes the ear is the unfailing grace, energy and expressivity of the three players. The music may be extravagant but the performances are well-balanced.” BBC Music Magazine, April 2013 **** |

“The playing is authoritative and idiomatic, and the artists are firmly focused in a warm but not excessively reverberant acoustic. This is Purcell at his finest.” Penguin Guide, 2011 edition | |

Musica Amphion Rémy Baudet (violin), Sayuri Yamagata (violin), Elisabeth Ingenhousz (violin) Rainer Zipperling (viola da gamba), Johannes Boer (viola da gamba), Nanneke Schaap (viola da gamba), Ricardo Rodriguez (viola da gamba), Nicholas Milne (viola da gamba), Frank Wakelkamp (viola da gamba) Pieter-Jan Belder (harpsichord & organ) A rare treat: no less than 7 CDs with instrumental chamber music by Henry Purcell. In spite of his past and present international fame too little attention has been paid to this part of his oeuvre. This collection offers a great variety: from ‘the Staircase overture’ to voluntaries for organ. Henry Purcell’s present fame is mainly based on some dramatic works. Dido and Aeneas -, his anthems and numerous songs. In his relatively short life he managed to compose in every genre usual at the time. Well hidden among a vast amount of vocal music lies a relatively small collection of chamber music pieces. Together with Handel Henry Purcell was and is England’s most important baroque composer. He was also an organist and as such left behind remarkable little for his instrument. Pieter-Jan Belder - the keyboard player who also recorded the complete Scarlatti sonatas - combined this with Purcell’s varied music for harpsichord, which includes eight suites. Here (together with) his ensemble Musica Amphion (he) also performs the bulk of Purcell’s chamber music: listen and enjoy. | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

And yet he has the power to transfix an
audience, as he did throughout his Wigmore Hall recital, without the need for gratuitous showmanship or wild musical gestures. Austerity and sobriety are the names of his particular performing game, tempered by
a compelling mix of passion and commitment to the broad repertoire within his command.” Andrew Stewart, The Independent, 10th January 1996 “Among the scholar-performers who have sparked and led the early music revival, surely none has played a greater part and exerted a more benificent influence on younger musicians and the public than Gustav
Leonhardt. Harpsichordist, organist, conductor, teacher, musicologist and editor are all roles in which he has distinguished himself.” Howard Schott, The Musical Times, October 1992 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |
