Staatskapelle Dresden, Hiroshi Wakasugi

70 Years of Berlin Classics - Wagner’s miraculous harp

Fired with enthusiasm, the twenty-year-old Richard Wagner embarked on the composition of his opera Die Feen (the fairies), based on a play by Carlo Gozzi, and completed it as early as 1834. No-one wanted it, though. He did at least manage to premiere Das Liebesverbot (the ban on love), an excellently conceived comic opera based on Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure, at the Magdeburg Municipal Theatre on March 29, 1836.

However, the second performance had to be cancelled after a fist fight broke out backstage before the curtain had even risen. Incidentally, this scuffle had been triggered by a private conflict among the cast and certainly had nothing to do with the quality of the new opera! Fortunately, no major loss was incurred as only three people had turned up to watch this performance. Anyone less enterprising might well have given up, but Wagner knew that by playing his cards right he would eventually become a reputable composer of opera.

Hiroshi Wakasugi was a true explorer who transcended musical worlds: born in New York, he studied in Tokyo and after graduating was engaged at the famous NHK Symphony Orchestra. He made guest appearances with the Dresden Staatskapelle from 1982 until 1991. It was during this particularly happy period of his life that the recordings presented here were made. Back then the critics commented that the Staatskapelle’s powerful brass in the Tannhäuser overture made a brilliant sound last heard under Fritz Busch back in 1932. Richard Wagner’s self-appointed “Wunderharfe” (miraculous harp) at its best. Wagner’s Overtures & Preludes to “The Flying Dutchman”, “Tannhäuser”, “Rienzi” & “Lohengrin” (Act 1 & 3).

Symphony No. 3 in D minor ‘Wagner Symphony'

3rd version, 1889

Wagner:

Tannhäuser: Overture

Andris Nelsons is Music Director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and is the designated Gewandhauskapellmeister of the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, with the appointment commencing in the 2017/18 season. With these positions, and in leading a pioneering alliance between these two esteemed institutions, two times Grammy Award winning Nelsons is firmly underlined as one of the most renowned and innovative conductors on the international scene today.

Since 2016 Andris Nelsons is a Deutsche Grammophon exclusive artist. Now, with his new orchestra, Nelsons is embarking on a long-term journey exploring the sound world of Anton Bruckner’s iconic symphonies.

This new and ambitious long-term recording project is consciously combined with the production of DG’s first complete Shostakovich cycle that Andris Nelsons is recording with Boston Symphony and that has already been awarded with two consecutive Grammy Awards plus various other awards.

“For me, where this recording reveals itself to be a truly top-drawer Bruckner performance is in the quieter moments...while the brassy climaxes do ring out most satisfactorily, Nelsons brings such shape and poise to his sculpting of these long movements that I’m sure this performance will win over some new converts to the cause of Bruckner!” James Longstaffe, Presto Classical, 5th May 2017

“Nelsons offers a more youthful, impetuous Bruckner than his older colleague [Herbert Blomstedt], but one in which the strings shimmer and glow, while wind and brass combine to unfold the majesty of Bruckner’s “Wagnerian” conception in his first masterpiece. The playing is a marvel.” Sunday Times, 28th May 2017

“As a Bruckner interpreter, Nelsons is direct, clear-sighted and spacious, the performance guided with a sure hand and a sense of inevitability but also meticulous in observing tempo and dynamic markings...The warmth and sonority of the playing at the start is enthralling and the performance unfolds with character and excitement.” Gramophone Magazine, July 2017

Several of the recordings on this disc date from 1960, when Otto Klemperer celebrated his 75th birthday and Wieland Wagner, the composer’s grandson, saluted the conductor as “a unique artistic phenomenon”. Klemperer’s mastery of Wagner’s music was rooted in the early years of his career: by the age of 30 he had conducted performances of Lohengrin, Der fliegende Holländer, Tannhäuser, Der Ring des Nibelungen, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Parsifal and Tristan und Isolde.

Wagner:

Tannhäuser: Overture

Südfunk –Sinfonieorchester, Georg Solti

This is the next release of the new digipack series « In Rehearsal & Performance » featuring works of the great conductors of the past.

Georg Solti was known for his incredible impulsive energy, when conducting.

His conducting technique contrasts fascinatingly with that of other conductors.

Solti's rehearsal and performance of Wagner's Tannhäuser Overture with the Südfunk – Sinfonieorchester is a fine illustration of this conductor's insistence on absolute precision, his engergetic style and his close familiarity with the score.

Sibelius: Symphony No. 2

Sibelius: Symphony No. 2

Sibelius:

Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 43

Wagner:

Tannhäuser: Overture

Read Presto's complete review of this disc here.

The Boston Symphony Orchestra and Andris Nelsons are very pleased to announce their first compact disc recording, a BSO Classics release pairing the overture to Wagner's Tannhäuser and the Symphony No. 2 of Jean Sibelius. Both works are taken from concert performances earlier this season at Symphony Hall-the Wagner from Maestro Nelsons' inaugural concert as music director on September 27, 2014, the Sibelius from his BSO program of November 6-11. The selections are particularly meaningful. It was hearing Wagner's opera when he was just five years old that made Andris Nelsons want to be a conductor; the Sibelius reflects his strong interest in music of the Scandinavian and Slavic countries, and also builds upon the BSO's distinguished history of past Sibelius recordings.

“this is a performance of great energy, especially in the first movement, which has a huge amount of drive and motion. This is a symphony that has lots of tricky corners for a conductor to negotiate, and Nelsons manages them all with ease; everything seems to flow naturally without any awkward transitions.” James Longstaffe, Presto Classical, 5th January 2015

“The Boston Symphony Orchestra never sounds less than sumptuous. These live recordings...suggest that, in their new music director, Andris Nelsons, the Bostonians have found a kindred spirit. The danger is overkill...Balance that, however, against searing passion and unflagging energy.” The Times, 10th January 2015 ****

“Nelsons directs with his customary zest and watchful sensitivity, while securing uncommonly articulate results from his dedicated band…a memorably alive and intrepidly characterful conception of the entrancing sweep, elasticity and grip that hits indisputable heights in the bardic second movement and exultant finale, the latter sounding as refreshingly unhackneyed and confident in its stride as I can ever recall…it really does warm the cockles to hear this great orchestra firing on all cylinders in repertoire in which it enjoys such a doughty tradition” Gramophone Magazine, June 2015

A delightfully colourful introduction to the orchestra, aimed to fire the imagination of children aged 4–9 years. There is a special guide in the book: a little green creature called Tormod. He is a troll who has come all the way from the top of a mountain in Norway to discover music. As he searches for the music that will help him to find his way home, readers learn about the different instruments – what they look and sound like, and how they belong in different families.

Throughout the book children are referred to the accompanying CD so that they can hear examples as they read. There is a musical quiz at the end, with multiple choice answers.

“aside from his musical achievement [Kaufmann] has both natural presence and the ability to put over the content of the narrations in gripping but unhistrionic fashion...The music-making is absolutely world-class. Orchestra, conductor and singer do not disappoint, especially the Dresden strings which, on this day, were on some kind of seraphic high of their own.” Gramophone Magazine, May 2014

“an extraordinary space inhabited by extraordinary musicians...Thielemann’s Wagner credentials are not in doubt, and he shows a masterful ear for unfolding Wagner’s paragraphs...He is on top form, bringing all of his baritonal warmth to the portrayals of these tortured heroes. It helps that you can see him too as his empathy with the characters is very strong.” MusicWeb International, May 2014

“Thielemann obviously does his hard work in rehearsal; his conducting technique here displays stylish brevity. Kaufmann’s contributions are excellent...As ever, the tone is covered and the distinctively rich, bronze quality is wonderful to hear.” Opera Now ****
