| | | Dvořák: Symphony No. 8
Following their recent recording of Dvořák’s Symphony No. 7, Claus Peter Flor and the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra return with his Symphony No. 8 Symphony No.8 is a lighter work than his Seventh. Its roots are firmly planted in the composer’s beloved Czech folklore and, but it also has interesting parallels with Mahler’s First Symphony The work is coupled with the symphonic poem The Golden Spinning Wheel, based on an epic poem by the Czech poet Karel Erben, and followed by the shorter Scherzo capriccioso. “Flor's excellent account of Symphony No. 8 stresses its pastoral aspect. Sympathetic interpretations of The Golden Spinning Wheel and the rumbunctious Scherzo capriccioso.” BBC Music Magazine, November 2012 **** “Flor is an imaginative narrator for The Golden Spinning Wheel, focusing its various episodes with a keen understanding of the full picture and making play with the score's very Czech rhythmic elements...there's spirit and colour to spare and the SACD sound throughout the programme is excellent, with particular acknowledgement of the low brass.” Gramophone Magazine, November 2012 | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Dvorak: Symphonies Nos. 7 & 8
Norrington returns to the works of Dvořak. Both he and his SWR ensemble have ample opportunity in these works to display their unflagging virtuosity. He has previously released Dvořak’s 9th Symphony with this orchestra (HAEN93251) “It is a very remarkable performance” International Record Review “in these performances, the interpretative stakes are raised by Roger Norrington's cultivation of orchestral string playing that eschews vibrato. The radically different effect will not appeal to all. While the string sound is more focused, it is also slighter and throws more emphasis onto the wind and brass, and the players of the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra step up at every stage.” BBC Music Magazine, December 2011 *** “Some expected Norrington attributes (uncluttered textures, minimal vibrato, etc) help focus the bare essentials of both masterpieces, the Seventh emerging as mellow but austere, the Eighth as a breezy 'dance symphony' in all but name...Norrington definitely stacks up, and if you accept the principles that underline his approach, I wouldn't hesitate, especially as the sound quality is extremely good.” Gramophone Magazine, November 2011 | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | The Berliner Philharmoniker in TokyoRecorded live at the Suntory Hall, Tokyo, 26 November 2000
For years the Berliner Philharmoniker have been famous for their acclaimed concerts in Japan. In this live recording from the year 2000, they perform under the direction of Mariss Jansons. He returns to direct the Berliner Philharmoniker, rekindling their long-standing relationship that began in 1976. Tokyo’s Suntory Hall is alive to a programme of particular musical energy − sometimes overt and joyous, sometimes suppressed and intense. Jansons’ fidelity to music composed during the Soviet era remains heartfelt: Shostakovich’s Violin Concerto No. 1, featuring soloist Hilary Hahn, is rendered with poise, elegance and demoniac vigour. This piece is framed by two sprightly works: Weber’s charming, zesty Overture to Oberon and Dvorák’s Eighth Symphony, executed with Bohemian-esque lyricism and verve. A new stunning release in our series of legendary recordings of the Berliner Philharmoniker - a new chapter of the amazing Berliner Philharmoniker Story. Hilary Hahn is a two-time Grammy Award-winning soloist. She is celebrated for her probing interpretations, technical assurance and compelling stage presence. Her extensive international performances and recording activities have made Hahn one of the most important artists of our years. Hahn's technical perfection in the Shostakovich would be hard to beat...The camera is on Jansons a lot and he provides an object lesson in when to conduct the music, when to beat time, and how important the eyes are as a means of communication.” BBC Music Magazine, July 2011 **** “As the opening of Dvorak's Eighth is moulded and caressed into Mariss Jansons...it quickly becomes apparent how distant we are from the plain-speaking affection of a native account by Talich or Ancerl...This is an exceptional account.” Gramophone Magazine, September 2011 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Herbert von Karajan conducts Brahms & Dvorak
“Karajan's superb reading of the Dvorak is the winner here with every detail of this volatile score superbly realised.” BBC Music Magazine, March 2011 *** “two of Karajan's most natural and elemental recordings...Karajan was more inclined to let the Vienna Philharmonic play - allowing it more freedom while still keeping a firm hand on the performance - than he was his own Berlin orchestra. The results have the kind of spontaneity and freshness that is sometimes missing from his Berin performances” International Record Review, May 2011 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Dvorák - Symphonies Nos. 7 & 8
In these live recordings from Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall in Baltimore, Dvorák’s most darkly dramatic and passionate symphony, the Seventh, is coupled with his Eighth, notable for its dramatic contrasts, Bohemian lyricism, and a seemingly spontaneous flow of thematic ideas. “Care for detail is apparent...[Alsop's] sense of line is at its most impressive in the way in which the slow movement is sustained and the unfolding of the joyous second theme in the finale...as a whole this splendidly recorded performance stands very high among available readings.” BBC Music Magazine, June 2010 ***** “Alsop's account of the extrovert Eighth...shows off the virtues of the Baltimore orchestra well” The Guardian, 20th May 2010 *** “Marin Alsop brings to this disc of two of Dvorák’s finest symphonies her customary taste and judgment. The noble opening of No 8 has just the right degree of spaciousness, the folk themes are suitably jaunty, the textures are admirably clear and her orchestra meticulously prepared.” The Telegraph, 13th June 2010 *** “The amount of felicitous detail here is more than enough to justify purchase, even if you already own one or more versions of either work...Alsop should please both the eager newcomer on the lookout for a recommendation and the seasoned collector who knows and loves the music but fancies listening between the staves.” Gramophone Magazine, August 2010 “The bewitching scherzo of the seventh and the lyrical adagio and allegretto grazioso of the eighth stand out in these meticulous live recordings, Alsop drawing some wonderfully sensitive, silky playing from her Baltimore players.” The Observer, 18th July 2010 “This is immensely refreshing, unforced and engagingly natural Dvorak playing. The slow movement is very well characterized and there's a sure sense of architecture as well as some rapturous playing...It's hard to imagine anyone being disappointed with such fresh and natural music-making.” International Record Review, October 2010 | | | (also available to download from $6.00) | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Dvorak - Symphonies Nos. 7 & 8
Signum's highly successful series of releases with The Philharmonia Orchestra continues with these live performances of Dvorak's symphonies Nos. 7 and 8, led by Sir Charles Mackerras. This is the second disc to feature Sir Charles, following on from last year's widely praised live recording of Schubert's Symphony No. 9. “[No. 8] carries all before it in a good performance, which it gets here from that master of Czech music, Charles Mackerras — 82 when these live recordings were made, and in spanking form. The woodwinds’ birdsong in No 8 is a special pleasure.” Sunday Times, 31st January 2010 **** “His approach in the Seventh might almost be described as operatic, with a clear focus on dramatic detail. There…the Eighth Symphony fares even better, with an infectious reading of the first movement and depth in the Adagio; very well recorded.” BBC Music Magazine, March 2010 ***** | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |
