Sean Shibe (guitar)

Read our exclusive interview with Sean Shibe about the recording here.

Barely half a century ago, the guitar was such a rarity in the concert hall that even an outstanding player like Julian Bream was remarkable as a pioneer as much as for his exceptional technique and musicality. Today, by contrast, the field is richly populated – thanks not only to Bream’s own inspiring example to younger players but also to the vastly increased repertoire, so much of which he also instigated.

Yet even in this new heyday for the instrument, Sean Shibe – whose full album debut here nests among four of those Bream-commissioned works a clutch of Dowland pieces from a previous Elizabethan Golden Age – stands out as a truly uncommon talent. ‘I want to hear his interpretation of Britten’s Nocturnal over and over,’ wrote David Nice in an awed recent concert review. ‘This, for me, is the definitive performance.’ Born in Edinburgh, in 2012 Shibe became the first guitarist to be selected for the BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists scheme, and the only solo guitarist to be awarded a Borletti-Buitoni Trust Fellowship. He was selected by Young Classical Artists Trust (London) in 2015.

“Shibe is another Bream, or something close. His playing unites finesse and poetry, and beautifully suggests a continuity of idiom.” Sunday Times, 23rd July 2017

Paul O’Dette’s newly recorded personal selection of favourite pieces from the pinnacle of lute repertoire by 'the Liszt of the lute'. Many of these pieces are melancholy but consistently lovely, enhanced by Paul O'Dette's new lute: a 2008 8-course by Malcolm Prior, after Sixtus Rauwolf, Augsburg 1590. O'Dette's 5-cd set of John Dowland was awarded no less than 5 Diaspasons and is due for reissue in the near future. His next release will be of Giovanni Antonio Terzi [1580-1620] provisionally titled 'Unplayable chords'.

“It's music through which he's grown and which has grown in him so that this beautifully assembled anthology isn't so much a compendium of 'greatest hits'...rather it's a beguiling progress report on O'Dette's continuing journey.” BBC Music Magazine, August 2014 *****

“inspired and inspirational. A considerable amount of [virtuosity].” International Record Review, September 2014

“a spirited performance. I always enjoy listening to O’Dette.” Early Music Review, October 2014

“the sound is generous, engaging and exquisite, like O’Dette’s playing, detailed and utterly unforced and natural, with just the right amount of touch on the strings and an ambient warmth that allows O’Dette to magically stretch phrases, whether sad or happy, across bar lines. It is a very heady experience.” Audiophile Audition, 24th December 2014

Longbow, Peter Sheppard Skærved

This album links the contemporary world with the Tudor England of 400 years ago.

The English composer David Gorton (b. 1978) has gone back to the music of John Dowland and rethought it in contemporary terms.

He has written an extended set of variations for string ensemble on Dowland’s massive hit Lachrymae and another on Dowland’s Forlorn Hope for 11-string guitar, where the titles of some of the variations poke fun at British politicians.

Composers all over Europe made their own versions of Lachrymae, and this album proves that Dowland’s fascination endures.

“Well recorded and presented with the Toccata label's usual good standards, this is an intriguing programme that is worthy of investigation - certainly for the Lachrymae Variations. Peter Sheppard Skærved's Longbow is a very fine band, both in this marvellous swirl of modernity and the more or less straight arrangements.” MusicWeb International, May 2017

João Carlos Victor (guitar)

Winner of the 2015 Tárrega Guitar Competition, João Carlos Victor brings us a captivating and imaginative programme with numerous transcriptions of his own and a première recording of music dedicated to him with Paulo Rios Filho’s dramatic Répéter. The music of John Dowland stands at the heart of this album, the mystery and melancholy of his chromatic fantasias providing moments of reflection between the theatricality of Rodrigo’s Invocación y Danza, Tárrega’s luminous mazurkas, and Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s brightly neo-classical Sonata.

Joseph Brent (mandolin), Alon Sariel (lute and mandolin)

Mandolinists Joe Brent and Alon Sariel present Dowland’s famous lute pieces in their own versions for two mandolins. “I prefer to think of this recording as a collaboration not merely between Alon and myself, but between the two performers and the luthier who created these beautiful and unique instruments”, says Brent with regard to the mandolins by Brian Dean that he used for this recording

Joachim Held is currently one of the best lute players in the world and received the 2006 Echo Klassik Prize for his CD Delightful Lute-Pleasure (HAEN98232). In the 16th and 17th centuries the concept of “melancholy” was seen as a deeply poetic element of soaring ecstasy with the power to inspire even better deeds. Held performs works by Holborne, Dowland, Byrd, Johnson and Cutting.

“Held's interpretations are steady but subtly phrased, sparingly ornamented and never indulge in extremes of tempo or rubato. With this recording Held offers us fresh insights into the soundscape of private music-making in the late Elizabethan era.” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2010
