For their first incursion into the works of Schubert on disc, the members of the Cuarteto Casals invite us to discover two quartets situated at the two extremes of the composer's life. Wrongly dated much later on its publication in 1830, the Quartet in E flat is in fact the work of a 16-year-old musician who had just entered teacher training college . . . Whereas its companion here was to be Schubert's very last quartet. Only 13 years separate the two pieces! But in the meantime a whole world had invaded his musical consciousness, and here the naivety of G major throws a deceptive veil over inner upheavals. “You’ll find plenty of Latin spirit in the Cuarteto Casals’s CD of two contrasting Schubert string quartets...Not all of the Casals’s current members are Spanish...But that never lessens the ensemble’s Latin passion and spunky attack. Their playing is a joy.” The Times, 27th July 2012 **** “Their account of the great G major is something out of the ordinary — I don’t recall a performance of this work in which Schubert’s existential angst is so relentlessly projected...The tragedy and drama of this music have rarely been so harrowingly delivered on disc.” Sunday Times, 22nd July 2012 “The excellent Spanish ensemble Cuarteto Casals...bring supple radiance and flair to these two works which span Schubert's brief career...Does music come any better?” The Observer, 22nd July 2012 “The Cuarteto Casals makes a clear distinction between the comparatively placid, sometimes lively progress of the early quartet and tough, symphonic nature of the G major work. The playing of the latter is strong, uncompromising, excellently structured and considered” International Record Review, September 2012 “Among modern performances I have heard none that surpasses this for obsessiveness. Even so, the Cuarteto Casals manage not to fall into the trap of making this an aural ordeal for the listener...but here there is unnerving exhilaration of riding in a fast vehicle that seems thrillingly unable to stop.” BBC Music Magazine, November 2012 ***** “these musicians shape the lines to reflect both poetry and youthful spirit. The Casals rightly scale down their their steely resolve that paid dividends in D887 but prefer detachment to ardour, particularly in the slow movement.” Gramophone Magazine, Awards Issue 2012 BBC Music Magazine

| | | Borodin Quartet play Schubert & BrahmsCité de la Musique, Paris, 16 January 2010
Described as ‘the quartet world’s most senior ensemble’, the Borodin Quartet is one of the great quartets of our time. The quartet celebrated its 65th anniversary with a sold-out concert at the Wigmore Hall, in London, a week before this live recording from the Cité de la Musique. Following the performance the Financial Times wrote that ‘today’s Borodin Quartet has lost nothing of its old authority’. The Telegraph named this anniversary concert at the Wigmore Hall as their best chamber moment of 2010, stating that the quartet ‘proved that decades of experience really count’. The Sunday Telegraph wrote ‘the Borodin Quartet plays with uncommonly rich, even tone and consoling warmth. For sheer musical presence, it has few equals.’ The quartet has stayed true to its roots, retaining its unique sound and style of playing over the years. The quartet’s recording of the Brahms quartets on Warners is described in the Penguin Guide as ‘Marvellously sophisticated playing.’ This is the first DVD release of this material. 1DVD Sound format: LPCM stereo Picture format: 4:3 Running time: 95’ Subtitles: n/a Menu languages: English Booklet languages: E/F/G Region code: 0 Territory Restrictions: None | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Schubert: String Quartets Nos. 10, 12 & 14, String Trio & String Quintet
In the final years of his brief life, Franz Schubert wrote some of the greatest chamber music in the literature. Yet these masterpieces, including three string quartets and a string quintet, remained virtually unknown for a quarter of a century after his birth. It was only when Josef Hellmesberger began his subscription quartet concerts at the Wiener Musikverein in 1849 that Schubert’s true stature began to be appreciated, so that people no longer saw him as a kind of amiable Biedermeier figure, scribbling songs on table napkins or scraps of paper, but as a major composer. This 2CD set, issued as part of a survey of the Vienna Philharmonic Quartet’s Decca recordings, include the familiar ‘Death and the Maiden’ Quartet, the little ‘Quartettsatz’ and the sublime String Quintet (with cellist Richard Harand). These recordings have historic significance, as the last gasp of a Viennese style of string playing in Schubert which stemmed from before World War II. All, except for D.810, make their first international appearance on CD. This recording of the String Quintet was, incidentally, chosen by Sir Colin Davis as a chosen recording on BBC’s Desert Island Discs. “easily the best version available in stereo … the Vienna players produce the expected golden tone quality, and the first movement in particular is a joy all through … tremendous” Gramophone Magazine (String Quintet) “the Vienna Philharmonic Quartet have the loveliest warm tone quality; their soft playing is a joy … Strongly recommended” Gramophone Magazine (Quartettsatz) “There are some lovely things in the two inner movements; the elegiac decorative variations bring out the best in the Vienna Philharmonic Quartet … and the Trio of the Scherzo is beautifully thrown of. [‘Death and the Maiden’ Quartet] … The E flat Quartet … gets exactly the right kind of performance” Gramophone Magazine (D.87) |

| | | Schubert: String Quintet & String Quartet No. 10
Profil are proud to present their latest release; a collaboration between Daniel Müller-Schott and the Vogler Quartet of string music played to the highest standard. Classics Today have praised Müller-Schott for his “awesome virtuoso brilliance” and The Guardian rate the Vogler Quartet “in the highest category of contemporary string quartets.” On a previous release The Guardian also wrote: “They play with a wonderful expressive ease and warmth and possess the unteachable knack of being able to communicate everything they do directly and unaffectedly. Their performances are marvels of eloquent phrasing and subtle co-ordination, instinctive music-making of the very highest class.” | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days.
