Bernarda Fink (mezzo) & Gerold Huber (piano)

The pieces selected for this recording mark out the milestones of a brief, rich and critically important career as a song composer, ranging in time from 1814 to 1826.Alongside the classic Schubert themes found here, such as deliverance and night, death, flight from the world and hope, we also encounter poets who were more than merely fixed stars in the composer's cosmos, including Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the writer he most often set, and Johann Baptist Mayrhofer. We can hear for ourselves a captivating, evocative musical language. It speaks of the constant struggle of an individual, his bitterness, his longing, and his desire for deliverance. Yet, however deeply Schubert bathed in this Romantic current, throughout his life art remained for him the only key that might perhaps lead to a 'better world'.And so, in 1817, he took up a text by his friend Franz von Schober to compose an ode to the all-placating 'blessed art' in An die Musik D547: music, which for Schubert, as he wrote to Schober in 1818, was nothing less than 'my beloved'. Bernarda Fink, has sung in numerous opera productions and has made over fifty recordings with a repertoire ranging from Monteverdi to Brahms and Bruckner, many for harmonia mundi and with René Jacobs. She has been flatteringly referred to as the natural successor to the late Lorraine Hunt Lieberson and to both [the living] Brigitte Fassbaender and Dame Janet Baker. Gerold Huber studied with Friedemann Berger and Helmut Deutsch in Munich, then attended Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau's lied class in Berlin. In addition to his regular appearances with Christian Gerhaher, he also performs with Ruth Ziesak, Cornelia Kallisch, Diana Damrau and Franz-Josef Selig and has also performed with the Artemis Quartet.

“One of the most versatile, as at ease in Baroque repertoire as in music from Handel and Mozart to Schumann, Fink's rich, warm voice boasts the perfect blend of colour and clarity.” The Observer

“[Fink's] Schubert springs directly from the eloquence of her diction, her understanding of the text and the velvet-like beauty of her exquisite mezzo-soprano. Nobody who loves Schubert should forgo the pleasures of this fine singing and playing. One of the records of the year, no doubt” Sunday Times, 24th August 2008 *****

“We're conscious throughout of a great voice superbly controlled, though [Fink] doesn't give nearly enough attention to words or expressive detail.” Tim Ashley, The Guardian, 12th September 2008 ***

“Supported by Huber's faultless articulation, Fink's tender tone and perfect diction relect every nuance of emotion in the modulations of 'Im Frühling' and 'Dass sie hier gewesen'” The Independent, 7th September 2008

“The clear, unfettered lyrical mezzo of Bernardo Fink makes this a winning new Schubert recital…” BBC Music Magazine, October 2008 ****

“This superlative disc, worthy of 10 stars establishes the mezzo Bernarda Fink as one of today’s great artists. The simplicity of her approach to Schubert is part of her magic. No arch mannerisms, no exaggerated emotion, but no lack of passion and insight. On every track you will find inspiration working at full intensity. She has the poise of a Ludwig. Even in the best known songs, she brings a fresh sense of adventure. Gerhard Huber is he accomplished pianist.” Sunday Telegraph

Christian Gerhaher (baritone) & Gerold Huber (piano)

“An exhilarating recital from this superb lieder singer” Gramophone

“Christian Gerhaher is one of the most exciting German baritones on the Lieder scene at the moment, with his outstanding natural voice, immaculately groomed to enable a powerful musical sculpting of all he sings. …Gerhaher and Huber are at their riveting and rhythmic best in the trotting gait of 'Drang in die Ferne', the canter of 'Auf de Bruck' and the break-neck gallop of 'Wilkommen und Abschied'.” BBC Music Magazine, August 2006 ****

“Eschewing the eccentricities and exaggerations of some of his contemporaries, Gerhaher wonderfully exhibits the verities of Schubert interpretation in this well-planned and absorbing programme. Everything he does evolves from the song in hand and so accords with all that is needed in performing some of the composer's greatest Lieder.
The title, 'Abendbilder', is interpreted freely but almost all the pieces have some relevance to the dreams and moods of evening. Gerhaher enters into these nocturnal moods with unerring artistry where line, tone and word-painting are concerned. He is at his very best in the three settings of Rückert. That quirky, equivocal piece Dass sie hier gewesen, prophesying the style and harmony of Hugo Wolf, is sung with a full understanding of its inner meaning. Du bist dieRuh is delivered with the fine line and intense concentration such a great song deserves, and the thoughts of an elderly man in Greisengesang are as meaningful as they should be.
Highly appealing throughout is the mellifluousness and breath control, a feature prominent throughout the recital, of the quietly contemplative Im Abendrot, and the appropriate dreaminess brought to the hypnotic barcarolle that is Des Fischers Liebesglück. As a nice contrast, Gerhaher brings virile energy to the fierce riding of Auf der Bruck – and here Gerold Huber deserves as much praise as his partner for portraying the insistent beat of horse's hooves in the piano part so vividly – and the familiar Der Musensohn has just the right verve as does another Goethe setting, the ecstatic Willkommen und Abschied, that brings a rewarding recital to an exhilarating close with Huber – as throughout – seconding the singer with his discerning contribution. The recording is ideally balanced.”

Ian Bostridge (tenor), Julius Drake (piano)

“A truly memorable experience. The first half of the programme is divided between settings of Mayrhofer and Goethe, two poets who drew the very best out of Schubert. Bostridge responds to this inspiration with singing that's worthy of the pieces both in terms of silvery, poised tone and inflection of the text. Such musing songs as Nachtstück, Abendstern, Geheimes, Versunken and An die Entfernte are delivered in that peculiarly plangent tone of the tenor's which causes his audiences to tremble in admiration.
Using vibrato, verbal emphases, pianissimos and floated touches to quite magical yet seemingly spontaneous effect, these songs, and many others receive near-ideal performances. Only in the rough-hewn Willkommen und Abschied would perhaps a heavier voice, a baritone rather than a tenor, be preferable. Bostridge enthusiasts will lap up this wonderful issue; so ought all lovers of Schubert Lieder. Bostridge need fear no comparison with other great interpreters of these songs. The admirable recording catches voice and piano in ideal balance.”
