Bernarda Fink (mezzo) & Gerold Huber (piano)

The pieces selected for this recording mark out the milestones of a brief, rich and critically important career as a song composer, ranging in time from 1814 to 1826.Alongside the classic Schubert themes found here, such as deliverance and night, death, flight from the world and hope, we also encounter poets who were more than merely fixed stars in the composer's cosmos, including Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, the writer he most often set, and Johann Baptist Mayrhofer. We can hear for ourselves a captivating, evocative musical language. It speaks of the constant struggle of an individual, his bitterness, his longing, and his desire for deliverance. Yet, however deeply Schubert bathed in this Romantic current, throughout his life art remained for him the only key that might perhaps lead to a 'better world'.And so, in 1817, he took up a text by his friend Franz von Schober to compose an ode to the all-placating 'blessed art' in An die Musik D547: music, which for Schubert, as he wrote to Schober in 1818, was nothing less than 'my beloved'. Bernarda Fink, has sung in numerous opera productions and has made over fifty recordings with a repertoire ranging from Monteverdi to Brahms and Bruckner, many for harmonia mundi and with René Jacobs. She has been flatteringly referred to as the natural successor to the late Lorraine Hunt Lieberson and to both [the living] Brigitte Fassbaender and Dame Janet Baker. Gerold Huber studied with Friedemann Berger and Helmut Deutsch in Munich, then attended Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau's lied class in Berlin. In addition to his regular appearances with Christian Gerhaher, he also performs with Ruth Ziesak, Cornelia Kallisch, Diana Damrau and Franz-Josef Selig and has also performed with the Artemis Quartet.

“One of the most versatile, as at ease in Baroque repertoire as in music from Handel and Mozart to Schumann, Fink's rich, warm voice boasts the perfect blend of colour and clarity.” The Observer

“[Fink's] Schubert springs directly from the eloquence of her diction, her understanding of the text and the velvet-like beauty of her exquisite mezzo-soprano. Nobody who loves Schubert should forgo the pleasures of this fine singing and playing. One of the records of the year, no doubt” Sunday Times, 24th August 2008 *****

“We're conscious throughout of a great voice superbly controlled, though [Fink] doesn't give nearly enough attention to words or expressive detail.” Tim Ashley, The Guardian, 12th September 2008 ***

“Supported by Huber's faultless articulation, Fink's tender tone and perfect diction relect every nuance of emotion in the modulations of 'Im Frühling' and 'Dass sie hier gewesen'” The Independent, 7th September 2008

“The clear, unfettered lyrical mezzo of Bernardo Fink makes this a winning new Schubert recital…” BBC Music Magazine, October 2008 ****

“This superlative disc, worthy of 10 stars establishes the mezzo Bernarda Fink as one of today’s great artists. The simplicity of her approach to Schubert is part of her magic. No arch mannerisms, no exaggerated emotion, but no lack of passion and insight. On every track you will find inspiration working at full intensity. She has the poise of a Ludwig. Even in the best known songs, she brings a fresh sense of adventure. Gerhard Huber is he accomplished pianist.” Sunday Telegraph

Peter Schreier – "Eight at 80" On July 29 this year, Peter Schreier celebrates his 80th birthday – an opportunity for the Berlin Classics label to honour the legendary singer with a generous box set. What concepts do we most readily associate with this outstanding musician? Being himself mattered to Peter Schreier, and he also liked to be easily understood. His pronunciation was always clear, but in addition to that, he sang the lyrics so as to make sense of them. Without ever sounding affected, he could bring out the inner meaning of a Schubert song as effectively as when he sang the part of a Bach Evangelist. In this sense, he was an unchallenged authority who was never dependent on pretentious gestures. This is surely one reason why he was so popular beyond the classical-music scene.

In the course of his dazzling operatic career, Peter Schreier made a special name for himself as an exceptional Mozart tenor. But operetta and folksong were also in his repertoire. His first love, however, was the art song, and he sang lieder of all periods up to the present day. Bach's works were another great love of his. Nor must we forget that from 1970 onwards, Peter Schreier had a conducting career. He still conducts occasionally, despite having bowed out as a singer in 2005.

The music on these eight CDs has been selected from the extensive Eterna archive in close consultation with Peter Schreier. It covers all the essential aspects of his repertoire, all the fields in which He laid down benchmark interpretations as a singer. The set includes a recording of Schubert lieder that is receiving its very first release on CD. The included DVD features a recent half hour interview with the singer, in which he looks back on a rich artistic life. Film excerpts of a 1971 lieder recital with Rudolf Buchbinder round off the DVD and the complete set – which will delight fans of the tenor and those keen to discover his many facets!

This set brings together for the first time Britten's complete Decca recordings as pianist and conductor in which he performs music by other composers - an astonishing variety of music that ranges from large-scale choral works by Bach and Purcell to Schumann and Elgar, as well as orchestral works by Mozart, Haydn and Schubert. Solo vocal repertory is generously represented with important works by Schubert and Schumann and early twentieth-century English song. Chamber music features Britten the pianist in partnership with two of Britten's closest collaborators: Mstislav Rostropovich and Sviatoslav Richter.

During the research and preparation for this set a major discovery was made. The existence of a few unpublished Schubert songs was already known and a few works which had never appeared on CD already ensured their inclusion at the planning stage. However the discovery of an unpublished tape containing almost 50 minutes of Mozart (including Symphony No. 40) with the London Symphony Orchestra recorded in Kingsway Hall in December 1963 was a genuine once in a lifetime discovery!

Included in the booklet are:-

Article by Britten scholar Dr Philip Reed assesses Britten’s contribution as a performer

Article on Pears and Britten performing Winterreise by one of today’s great accompanists and writers on music, Graham Johnson
