The Sanguine Fan, Op. 81

Sursum corda, Op. 11

The outbreak of the Great War caused Elgar much anguish and depression and the music composed during these years reflects his sorrow and deep patriotism.

Apart from Elgar’s early Sursum Corda Op. 11 (composed in 1894), this disc takes us on a musical journey from shortly before the war began to the composer’s last wartime orchestral work, The Sanguine Fan, a shaft of light during the darkest days of the war in 1917. The music on this disc, although not premiere recordings (they were originally recorded by the HMV label), this is the first modern recording not only of these works but also to provide a unique survey of Elgar’s compositions of this time.

Performed by the BBC Concert Orchestra and conducted by John Wilson, this CD also includes Susan Gritton and the renowned actor Simon Callow who is the speaker on Le Drapeau Belge Op 79.

“Un Voix dans le désert, Carillon and Le Drapeau Belge are melodramas to wartime verse by the Belgian Emile Cammaerts, vigorously proclaimed by Callow, with a taut solo from Gritton halfway through the first. More interesting agitprop is the purely orchestral Polonia” Sunday Times, 18th November 2012

“Here's a supremely enjoyable Elgar survey centred around a clutch of works composed during the Great War...Throughout, the BBC Concerto Orchestra respond with bright-eyed conviction and commendable polish for John Wilson, whose endearingly communicative, shapely and affectionate readings...hold their own...Elgarians shoudl ceratinly lend an ear to this entreprising and rewarding Somm anthology” Gramophone Magazine, January 2013

“This is a rewarding disc, giving us opportunities to hear some Elgar scores that rarely see the light of day. John Wilson is in evident sympathy with the music and secures consistently fine playing from the BBC Concert Orchestra...The texts are included - though you won’t need them to follow Simon Callow’s speech, so clear is his diction” MusicWeb International, 26th April 2013

Sir Adrian Boult

Sir Edward Elgar (1857-1934) was England's greatest composer since the death of Henry Purcell in 1695. He was a relatively late developer, with his first major symphonic work, the Enigma Variations (1898-99), being produced when he was already in his forties.

Elgar wrote two very fine symphonies that unerringly captured the zeitgeist of Edwardian England; both are included in this set in superb performances by Bernard Haitink. The first disc ends with two additional Elgar pieces performed by the late lamented Richard Hickox.

“Magnificent Elgar from Haitink, masterfully balancing long-range sweep and fine orchestral detail, and finding ferocious brilliance in the First Symphony's Scherzo. Boult's Cockaigne is a coruscating bonus.” BBC Music Magazine, May 2011 ****

“conductor and orchestra seem alert to every nuance of Elgar's wonderful scoring. They make the most of the stranger and more remote regions of this great work, resulting in a performance that is full of interest as well as beautifully played and very well paced by Haitink.” International Record Review, May 2011

"In the Introduction and Allegro, Sir John shows his love of the score clearly enough and his is an experienced, masterly performance. The Serenade is warm and affectionate also, but the work’s calm serenity is nevertheless skilfully preserved." Gramophone Magazine

The award winning Argentinian cellist Sol Gabetta focuses her considerable talents on Late Romantic cello repertoire on her latest release on RCA Red Seal/Sony Music Entertainment. Gabetta’s sensational live recording of the Elgar: Cello Concerto is the centrepiece to a stunning new album from one of classical music’s most thrilling and successful young stars. Ms. Gabetta is joined on the works by Elgar, Dvorák and Respighi by the Danish National Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Mario Venzago.

In addition to Elgar’s concerto, Ms. Gabetta’s new release features three of Elgar’s miniatures, the introspective Sospiri and the light-hearted, romantic salon pieces Salut d’amour and La capricieuse, in new arrangements for cello and orchestra. The album also includes Antonín Dvorák’s Waldesruh and Rondo and Ottorino Respighi’s rarely recorded Adagio con variazioni.

English Chamber Orchestra, Paul Goodwin

Paul Goodwin brings fresh insight and a spirit of renewal to this lyrical program of Elgar rarities, in which the composer recaptures happy memories of his youth.

“Not even Sir John Barbirolli or the much underrated William Boughton quite captures the same sense of strings merely breathing on their instruments in the way Goodwin memorably achieves here. …while the strings of the ECO capture to glowing perfection the barely restrained emotions of the sublime Elegy. An outstanding programme.” International Record Review, March 2001

“Natalie Clein's opening statement is confident and clean: this is an Elgar with pace and portamento, but rather thin on poetry. The upside is the delightful selection of salon pieces at the end of this disc. In the impish La capricieuse and the touching Sospiri, we glimpse the mature, distinctive artist.” BBC Music Magazine, November 2007 ****

“Clein demonstrated the lyricism on which she’s building a solid reputation, her instrument … blossoming into a rich, burnished voice. Threads became soaring melodies, fragments made textural sense.” The Independent

“Clein’s playing has an especially warm tone and smooth phrasing; her cello treats each note with the same love, and these qualities make hers a particularly unique interpretation. Elgar’s sense of loss is conveyed powerfully under her fingers, but with a gentleness that du Pré’s tempestuous-to-the-point-of-rough delivery never gave.” Charlotte Gardner, bbc.co.uk, 14th September 2007

Elegy for strings, Op. 58

As the present principal conductor of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, Sakari Oramo has chosen works by Edward Elgar, a composer whose music he has been a fervent advocate of since his tenure at the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Oramo’s commitment to Elgar has been rewarded with a medal of honour from the British Elgar Society.

Oramo has already led the RSPO through a series of high-profile projects which has recently included a very successful tour of Japan. Oramo will be making his debut performance as Chief Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the last night of the Proms.

All three works presented here have a melancholic tinge with Symphony No. 2 being dedicated to the memory of King Edward VII, accompanied by two smaller string works: Elegy and Sospiri (‘sighs’).
