“…some of the Sonata's radical harmonic language is present in the elusive left-hand Improvisations written in 1918 for Douglas Fox, who had lost his right arm in the trenches. Wass's deeply felt and finely shaded accounts of these pieces, displaying an admirably wide range of touch and dynamics, are probably the best performances on the disc.” BBC Music Magazine, July 2007 **** “[Ashley Wass] plays the Piano Sonata with an expressive rubato that indicates complete understanding of the language and phrasing, a teasing glow in the slow movement and a sense of anxious searching in the finale.” The Times | | | (also available to download from $6.00) | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

London Bridge Ensemble: Daniel Tong (piano), Benjamin Nabarro (violin), Lucy Gould (violin), Tom Dunn (viola) & Kate Gould (cello) In this tuneful and attractive programme Daniel Tong (piano) and the London Bridge Ensemble present three major chamber works by Frank Bridge from his engaging pre-First World War period, including the recording of Paul Hindmarsh’s edition of the Violin Sonata in E flat. Commanding performances of the well-known Piano Quintet of 1912 and the comparatively little-known Phantasie in F minor for string quartet, with which Bridge won second prize in the Cobbett Competition in 1905, make a fine group. These major works are complemented by charming performances of three piano pieces – April, Rosemary and Valse Capricieuse – two for viola and piano – Pensiero and the powerful Allegro Appasionato – and the Spring Song for cello and piano. “the poetry, flexibility and ardour displayed by these gifted players held me captive from first note to last...Don't hesitate for a moment - and fingers crossed for more Bridge from this exemplary team!” Gramophone Magazine, December 2010 | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

“The main work here is the grim and haunted Sonata (1921-24), Bridge's painful and profound response to the Great War. This is an epic performance, making the most of the work's mingled violence and crepuscular moods.” BBC Music Magazine, September 2006 ***** “…Bebbington is a sensitive, stylish performer who never forces the tone and displays a genuine empathy for Bridge's touching and consistently absorbing inspiration.” Gramophone Magazine, October 2006 BBC Music Magazine
