‘These motets contain gorgeous music: they are to some degree concert music as much as religious music, and indeed the version of In Convertendo that has survived is the revised one for the Concert Spirituel. Lengthy orchestral parts, ravishing solos accompanied by flutes, occasional interludes with oboes and bassoons, make a lot of the music lyrical, if not elegiac.’ www.medieval.org

“The tendency to divide top honours in the high Baroque between Bach and Handel seems most unfair when Rameau is on the menu. What an astonishing musical imagination! The performance of the early, breathtakingly inventive motet, In convertendo, is mostly excellent... The documentary on Rameau has much charm and offers some sound historical insights.” BBC Music Magazine, October 2006 ****

The Chapelle royale is one of the oldest French royal musical institutions. Its history goes back to the Middle Ages. Although it was originally set up by Francis Ist, it really rose to heights of splendour in the reign of Louis XIV, at Versailles: “This monarch’s lasting intention was to make the chapel at Versailles the most magnificent place in this sumptuous, brilliant palace,” it says in a folio of the Mercure galant from 1682. The Chapelle was under the direction of a master of music, a high ecclesiastical dignitary. Its musicians were allotted to serve the religious offices, and to the under-masters (sous-maîtres) fell the honour of conducting the services, from 1663 each serving in turn for one quarter or term.

These recordings date from 1992-93 and feature an array of artists whose eminence in the once-elusive style of the French Baroque is unchallenged.

“the Paris production by Robert Carsen of Rameau's astonishing last opera, Les Boréades, is brilliantly sumptuous if cold, while Pierre Audi's typically sharp and forceful Castor et Pollux from Amsterdam is eloquent. Andrie Serban's Les Indes galantes is a riot of fun, but pick of the bunch is José Montalvo's mingling of video, dance and animal fantasy in Les Paladins, one of the most deliciously clever stagings of recent times, with superbly lively music from Christie's forces.” The Observer, 1st May 2011
