It may be a little surprising, or disconcerting, but it is not the demonstrative, ‘furioso’ Vivaldi, the Vivaldi full of striking contrasts, that you will find here. The ardour, the spirit, of his music is there of course, but our aim is rather to bring out the more intimate, more complex side of his work, its many timbres, colours, textures and emotions – all the variety that is to be found in the music of this extraordinary composer, loved by some exponents of early music and shunned by others.

Les Basses Réunies have chosen to use many different instruments and timbres for these pieces, and to transcribe and transpose some of them, the aims being to present little-known works, show well-known ones in a new light, and to highlight the rich palette of sound and the many possible timbral combinations afforded by the instruments of Les Basses Réunies, thus expressively and movingly revealing the composer’s very soul.

“'In furore is the ideal score for any soprano who's spoiling for a fight – with herself!' So says Sandrine Piau in the booklet, and she could have added that it also makes a superb opener for any disc. The motet could have been made for a singer of Piau's avian lightness and agility, and sure enough she throws herself into it, bringing to it her usual precision and, with a technique that enables plenty of dazzling extra ornaments, winning personality.
With her energy and imagination, Piau manages to find contrast in the work, not just between its fearful opening movement and more penitential second, but on a local scale as well. In the Laudate pueri, an altogether more urbane offering, she sings with poise, expressive sophistication and tonal power. Piau's quickness of mind is matched by the orchestral playing of Accademia Bizantina, whose sound, typically for an Italian group, is deliciously grainy, allowing for an alert and intense approach to interpretative detail. Thus they never fail to enhance the mood of a particular number, a skill which they also put to good use in the disc's three orchestral works..”

Accademia di Sam Rocco, Francesco Fanna

This project is a collaboration between the two organists Margherita Gianola and Silvio Celeghin with Francesco Fanna, conductor and director at the Istituto Italiano Antonio Vivaldi of the Fondazione Giorgio Cini in Venice, in which large part of Vivaldi’s manuscripts and scores are archived. The CD is a collection of Concertos where the organ is the absolute protagonist as soloist and in an interesting interaction with string instruments. The title of the release is inspired by the two organs of the XVIII century in the Basilica dei Frari in Venice which are exceptionally appropriate for playing Vivaldi’s music. The Callido (1795) is very versatile and enhances the whole sound, while the Piaggia (1732), the only organ in Venice made while Vivaldi was still alive, is elegant, light and full of verve.

“Despite the lack of 100% violinistic élan this is a recording which has plenty of fine moments, and Vivaldi’s music is always entertaining. The character and sonority of the organs is well captured, and there is plenty of contrast in the programme between the solo organ transcriptions and pieces with strings.” MusicWeb International, 22nd July 2013

L'arte Del'arco

Among Vivaldi’s 600 or so concertos, those for keyboard – organ or harpsichord are surprisingly small in number for this most prolific of baroque composers. Of these works, nine in all, there are also several rather tantalising fragments and odd movements, and all betray in the keyboard writing, the composer’s genius as a violinist. The right hand plays violinistic figurations, whilst the left more often than not plays a simple bass line. Interestingly, many of these concertos are arrangements by Vivaldi of concertos for other forces with the exception of RV541 and 542 - both composed as violin and organ concertos. The 2nd movement of RV541 is especially effective with the organ accompanying the violin with a discreet bass line and three-note chords on the right hand. Vivaldi calls for an improvised cadenza in the finale.

Recording made in 2007.

Lesser known Vivaldi.

Europa Galante’s tribute to Vivaldi, which sees them perform his concertos, led by its founder Fabio Biondi. This special luxury limited-edition set incorporates Europa’s Galante’s first ever recording after being founded by Biondi. It met with instant critical acclaim and was awarded the Premio Cini in Venice and the ‘Choc du Monde de la Musique’. Europa Galante was born in 1990 from the desire of its artistic director Fabio Biondi to form an Italian instrumental ensemble to play the Baroque and Classical repertory on period instruments.
