Emmanuel Pahud (flute), Matthew Truscott (violin) & Trevor Pinnock (harpsichord & conductor)

Kammerakademie Potsdam

Emmanuel Pahud performs music written for and by the gifted flautist, composer and patron of the arts, King Frederick the Great of Prussia. The release features concerti, solo sonatas and chamber works by J S Bach, CPE Bach, Johann Joachim Quantz, Franz Benda, Johann Friedrich Agricola, Anna Amalia von Preussen and Frederick the Great.

Joining Pahud are the period instrument ensemble Kammerakademie Potsdam and renowned harpsichordist Trevor Pinnock. 'The Flute King' anticipates the 300th anniversary, in January 2012, of the birth of an enlightened monarch whose love of music changed the musical scene in continental Europe.

“Pahud is outstanding, albeit on a modern metal flute rather than a gentler, less penetrating historical wooden instrument.. He's best of all in CPE Bach's solo Sonata where, with reverberant acoustic and excellent recording, he generates fine fruity bass notes to support the broken harmony above. A fascinating snap-shot of the mid-18th century Berlin court.” BBC Music Magazine, February 2012 *****

“Pahud demonstrates a flexibility of phrase that arises naturally from the architectonics of the music rather than being imposed on it by a 'personality'. Despite the modern flute, his ornamentation and articulation are thoroughly idiomatic and chime with his period-instrument collaborators' crispness of attack and cleanly expressive shifts in colour...[Pahud] can equally lay claim to the title of 'The Flute King'” International Record Review, May 2012

Bach’s music was the main focal theme of the 2008 Spannungen Festival. These live performances are typical of the performers’ capacity for curiosity, spontaneity and enthusiasm.

“The Violin Sonata is the stand-out work in this Bach selection from Heimbach. Here is genuine re-creative musicianship… and the whole work is shot through with a similar artistic verisimilitude that makes the disc worth owning.” Gramophone Magazine, January 2010

The 18th century is probably the most extraordinary period of transformation Europe has known since antiquity. Political upheavals kept pace with the innumerable inventions and discoveries of the age; every sector of the arts and of intellectual and material life was turned upside down. Between the end of the reign of Louis XIV and the revolution of 1789, music in its turn underwent a radical mutation that struck at the very heart of a well-established musical language. In this domain too, we are all children of the Age of Enlightenment: our conception of music and the way we ‘consume’ it still follows in many respects the agenda set by the 18th century. And it is not entirely by chance that harmonia mundi has chosen to offer you in 2011 a survey of this musical revolution which, without claiming to be exhaustive, will enable you to grasp the principal outlines of musical creation between the twilight of the Baroque and the dawn of Romanticism.

“Harmonia Mundi have somehow contrived to telescope that most industriously inventive of musical centuries into this 30CD set, by dint of ingenious thematic programming which apportions discs to different modes...it's an indisputable bargain box.” The Independent, 28th December 2011 ****
