Niu Niu (piano)

“Poetic insights? Moments of repose? Those must wait, if they arrive at all, for the prodigy’s mature adulthood...the piano tone is varied and round, never appearing to have been stamped out by a music-making machine. Another good omen could be the modest, almost casual way that Niu Niu often concludes a piece, rarely emphasising the final chord.” The Times, 11th January 2013 ***

“in purely digital terms, Niu Niu produces some remarkable playing. He has a wonderful leggiero touch when required: the 'Spinnerlied' from The Flying Dutchman is very fine (how good to hear a youngster revive this old favourite)...Niu Niu is able to breathe fresh life into an old chestnut like the Liebestraum No. 3. So - fantastic fingers, bags of potential but, as yet, no charm.” Gramophone Magazine, March 2013

“Given that Niu Niu was only 14 when he made this recording last year, his achievement is remarkable. His equable, rounded tone is underpinned by mature technique...Sometimes a big enough response to the music's soaring flight is lacking...Clearly though, here is a fine musical talent.” BBC Music Magazine, April 2013 ***

Dejan Lazic (piano)

Dejan Lazic; on this, his first album for ONYX, pays tribute to a composer and his legacy as a piano virtuoso, organist, improviser, arranger, conductor, teacher, author, philanthropist and traveller. Liszt lived life to the full, and this recital captures that love of life, his genius as a pianist and composer, a traveller with a restless and curious mind. Liszt’s respect for the music of other composers is to be found in his arrangements for piano of orchestral, operatic and other vocal works. From Wagner’s operas to Schubert Lieder via Beethoven Symphonies, his deep love for the music is apparent and such arrangements gave this music a wider audience in both the salons and domestic settings that lives on today.

"Embarking on a recording project like this obviously required a substantial amount of preparation time. But once the date has come it was of a tremendous importance to capture and to honour the spontaneity of Liszt’s versatile, eclectic, and revolutionary genius", writes Dejan in his introduction to the recital, captured at a live performance at Hohenhems, and one further day in studio conditions.

Elegy in A flat

Einleitung zu 'Tristan und Isolde', WWV 90

transcr. Zoltán Kocsis

After highly successful recordings of works by Brahms, the Schumanns, and Chopin, Imogen Cooper plunges into the world of another great romantic, Franz Liszt, and places him alongside that other giant, Richard Wagner. This is an evocative programme of original compositions and intimate transcriptions, ranging from poetic movements from the Années de Pèlerinage: Italie to darker and deeply elegiac pieces, including Liszt’s La lugubre gondola I and Wagner’s Elegie. It also features a transcription by Zoltán Kocsis of the intensely passionate prelude to Tristan und Isolde. The famous pianist and conductor died prematurely in November 2016. It was his work that inspired this recording to begin with, and Imogen Cooper dedicates the disc to his memory.

Breathtaking music in unique interpretations: romanticism without melodrama, virtuosity without fuss.

Love in Piano Music

Liszt:

Isolde's Liebestod (after Wagner), S447

Prokofiev:

Ten Pieces from Romeo and Juliet, Op. 75

Schumann:

Kinderszenen, Op. 15

Stephen De Pledge (piano)

New Zealand pianist Stephen de Pledge’s new album of solo piano music takes it’s title from a line in Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet, and presents a selection of ‘Love in Piano Music’.

He begins with Kinderszenen by Robert Schumann, deceptively simple pieces which are reflections on childhood, written for his beloved Clara Wieck two years before they were finally granted permission to marry.

It was Liszt who first described the great final aria in Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde as her ‘Liebestod’ (love-death), and his famous transcription made for solo piano in 1868 and revised in 1875 is perhaps the ultimate expression of a ‘love song’ for piano.

A landscape with too few lovers, painted by the New Zealand artist Colin McCahon, inspired compatriot composer Ross Harris (born 1945) to write this piece for Stephan de Pledge.

Goyescas by the Spanish composer Enrique Granados is in two parts and ‘Los Requiebros’ (Endearments) is heard here. It is by turns flamboyant, seductive, and unmistakably virtuosic. Granados himself gave the suite’s premiere in 1911.

Prokofiev’s arrangement of Ten Pieces for piano solo from Romeo and Juliet was the composers attempt to salvage some of his music from the original ballet score after the director of the Bolshoi, due to premiere the work in the 1935-6 season, was arrested as an ‘enemy of the people’ and shot.

Sergio Gallo (piano)

A Steinway artist, Sergio Gallo specialises in the repertoire of the Romantic period, especially Liszt and his contemporaries, including Schumann, Henselt, Brahms and Chopin. He has also championed the work of Brazilian composers, the nation of his birth. Gallo has recorded several acclaimed CDs for Eroica, with forthcoming projects committed to the Naxos and Naxos Grand Piano labels. His recordings have received high praise from Gramophone magazine (of his most recent Villa-Lobos recording: “splendid playing of a lively programme… [a] nuanced performance… played with exceptional artistry”) and American Record Guide (“it is hard to imagine a pianist leaving me with a more intense feeling of nobility”).
