Nicolas Bringuier (piano)

Béla Bartók's piano works often have a subordinate role as it is difficult to place them stylistically, and because they present an enormous technical challenge. This programme, performed by the young French pianist Nicholas Bringuier, presents works by Bartók written between 1909 and 1926. It takes both a courageous and superior interpreter to do justice to these works.

“Bringuier's brightly buoyed performances are bang on the nail whereas his subtle sense of colour works well in the Four Dirges… more elastic, less relentless Bartók than has become the norm in recent years…” Gramophone Magazine, November 2009

Dino Ciani (piano)

The story of Dino Ciani unfolded in the brief span of a few years.

A period rich in events, successes and hopes that everybody, friends and admirers alike, felt were soon to be realised. Memorable were the technical ease, the smoothness and elegance of Ciani’s playing. Dino Ciani left us on 27th March 1974, meeting his sad destiny on the Via Flaminia near Rome: a road accident, one of the many tragedies to which journalistic routine generally reserves just a few lines at the bottom of the page. News of Dino’s death struck a chill blow to the heart of the entire world of music, not just in Italy, at the time. Twenty-eight years have passed since that tragic accident and Dynamic has decided to dedicate Ciani this 6-CD box set at half price, containing live and studio recordings which have not been digitally re-mastered in order to offer an authentic document of this pianist’s talent.

Zoltán Kocsis performs the complete solo piano music of his fellow Hungarian, Béla Bartók. Completed in 2001, these critically acclaimed, definitive performances are the benchmark against which all others are considered.

"Kocsis penetrates to the very centre or soul of this music" The Penguin Guide to CDs

“it remains the classic set for the foreseeable future. Bartok playing doesn't come any better than this - nor does piano recording. Kocsis penetrates to the very centre and soul of this music more deeply than almost any rival. Scrupulous to the composer's wishes, Kocsis can produce power and drama when required, but it also commands a wide-ranging palette and a marvellously controlled vitality.” Penguin Guide, 2011 edition
