| | | Beethoven: Symphony No. 3 in E flat major 'Eroica'
"The LSO did it full dramatic justice, reminding us that it makes an arguably better dramatic prelude to the opera than No. 3 itself - and showing us that the LSO itself was on best form, as under Haitink they usually are" (The Financial Times - concert review) A high density DSD recording, live at the Barbican Centre on 16-27 November 2005 “The orchestra plays superbly, and there are plenty of indications that the conductor has taken note of recent changes in attitude to Beethoven performance, such as giving prominence to the woodwind and the timpani in a way no previous generation of conductors did” BBC Music Magazine, August 2006 **** “Haitink is now hearing Beethoven with the experience of period-instrument interpretations in mind. The snap, the bite, the punchy fortissimos … taut rhythms and mounting tension crowned the night in the Eroica” The Times “Haitink's approach is softer, more malleable, less uptight, lighter on its feet than some but still engaged with what one might call the Romantic tradition. His liveliness never draws attention to itself… Haitink offers us a thoughtful and unfussy Leonore No 2, strong and well paced... with some telling pianissimi.” Gramophone Magazine, September 2006 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Berlioz - Symphonie Fantastique
The Philharmonia Orchestra’s 2nd disc with Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor Esa-Pekka Salonen, shifts dramatically in tone from the first, exploring Berlioz’s evocative sonic dream Symphonie Fantastique, alongside Beethoven’s Leonore Overture. Since September 2008 Salonen has been Principal Conductor and Artistic Advisor of the Philharmonia Orchestra. In his first season in this role he devised and led City of Dreams, a nine-month exploration of the music and culture of Vienna between 1900 and 1935. The project, which presents the music of Mahler, Schoenberg, Zemlinsky and Berg in its social and historical context, has travelled to 18 cities across Europe, culminating in semi-staged performances of Berg’s Wozzeck, with Simon Keenlyside in the title role, in October 2009. “there's a passionate restraint about Salonen's readings that is far more telling than many more overtly histrionic versions...clearly prioritising musical imperatives over mere pictorialism, yet with no shortage of electricity in the air, either emotional or elemental.” BBC Music Magazine, June 2010 **** “In the symphony, Salonen gives the orchestra its head while balancing the textures meticulously...The mighty Leonore No 2 (the first composed) is an apt coupling...and it is played with immense force and eloquence.” Sunday Times, 20th June 2010 **** “The Philharmonia gives its all in a performance that relishes the manic contrasts in Berlioz's groundbreaking score as well as emphasising its symphonic sweep - as witness the March to the Scaffold, with its galvanising sense of inevitability.” Classic FM Magazine, November 2010 **** | | | Usually despatched in 3 - 4 working days. |
