Murray Perahia, nominated for artist of the year in the 2008 Gramophone Awards, has often been described as an aristocrat of the piano, with good reason. His commanding vision and his supremely polished virtuosity are complemented by a luminous intelligence and a poetic sensitivity, embracing equally the lyric and the epic. His career has recently been revitalised, after many years, with the new release on Sony/BMG of Beethoven Piano Sonatas and Bach Partitas. "Each note was characterised by a singing tone whose weight and emotional colour was individually judged yet forming part of a massively conceived and controlled structure." The Guardian “Murray Perahia… is undoubtedly on tremendous form. He displays limitless reserves of strength for the bravura passages and a huge strong tenderness in, for instance, the opening of the slow movement of the Third Concerto.” BBC Music Magazine, March 2009 *** “[Perahia's] playing is peerless and Marriner gives him vital and sensitive support” Penguin Guide, 2010 | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

The performances by a strikingly youhthul Ashkenazy are full of spirit...In many ways the Emperor is the finest of all, freshly inspired, not barnstorming, witha a beautiful, hushed slow movement. The camerawork is straightforward, as one would expect from Brian Large” Penguin Guide, 2010 *** | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

“These are intensely individual and newly revealing expressions of what Beethoven meant. I cannot imagine I shall ever exhaust their freshness, or stop marvelling at their power, for to my ear this is the truest musical inspiration miraculously caught on the wing.” Gramophone Magazine “Klemperer and Barenboim seemed to come at these works from opposite ends, so to speak...The chemistry that flies off the two is certainly remarkable, but you’ll have to decide for yourself whether you like it.” MusicWeb International, 29th April 2013 |

| | | Gilels plays Beethoven
Emil Gilels belongs to a select group of the greatest pianists of the 20th century. Born in Odessa in 1916, he began his studies at the age of 5, and gave his first public recital at the age of 13. Odessa and Moscow Conservatories followed, and unusually in 1936 he was allowed to perform outside the Soviet Union. His American debut was delayed by World War II, finally taking place in 1955 to great acclaim. His Uk debut took place in 1953. Gilels gave the premiere of Prokofiev’s 8th Sonata, of which he is the dedicatee. Harold C Schonberg described Gilels as ‘a strong, clear player, rather objective in outlook, who did not allow himself to become emotionally overthrown by the music’: an approach which is ideally suited to Beethoven’s concertos as can be heard on these CDs. “Incandescent pianism from Gilels in live 1976 recordings from the Russian archives. Masur provides a strong, sympathetic background.” BBC Music Magazine, May 2012 ***** “These are manly interpretations where the musculature is never for one moment in doubt...The orchestral playing is tight as a drum and rhythmically alive...This set is well worth exploring providing you are not allergic to a spray of audience noise.” MusicWeb International, February 2012 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |
