The only DVD of Grigory Sokolov, an exceptional artist, famously reclusive, is once again available. In the 40 years since the 16-year-old Sokolov was awarded first prize at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1966, the world has been blessed with what one American critic recently called "a kind of pianism, musicianship and artistry one thought had vanished forever". Championed at a young age by Emil Gilels and a prominent figure on the Russian music scene since his early teens, Sokolov has gained an almost mythical status amongst music-lovers and pianophiles throughout the world. Sokolov has amazed everyone again and again with the enormous breadth of his repertoire and his huge, almost physical musical strength. Visa problems have again made Italy-based Russian pianist Grigory Sokolov cancel a London booking. After last year's Barbican concert was called off at short notice came the news that he would not be visiting the Royal Festival Hall on 29th April as planned. "Sokolov, although a well-kept secret, is for many the greatest pianist alive today. Youthful celebrities with fast fingers, designer gear and slick photos pall beside such gigantic artistry, for Sokolov is a pianistic Dostoyevsky, his music-making vast in scope, visionary and revelatory, squeezing out every last drop of meaning." Jessica Duchen, International Piano Sept/Oct 2006 "There can be few virtuosi with fingers to touch his" The Sunday Times Region Code: NTSC 0 Picture Format: NTSC 16:9 Sound Format: PCM-STEREO Disc Format: DVD9 No of Discs: 1 Run Time: 123 mins Released: 2009-06-01 “…Monsaingeon has resisted the obvious temptation to be too interventionist. Limiting the number of different angles at which we survey Sokolov's phenomenal pianism to a bare minimum certainly enables the viewer to be hypnotically drawn into the performances which in themselves are pretty remarkable.” BBC Music Magazine, September 2009 ***** “…Sokolov, a bulky, impassive figure, is fascinating to watch, playing as he does with dangerously high hand movements and expressive gestures. Three Beethoven sonatas are played in an uninterrupted sequence with such beauty of tone, sculptured phrasing and cohesive narrative that criticism is silenced. ...Prokofiev's Seventh Sonata, a coruscating, vehement reading that will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. Unmissable for all pianophiles.” Gramophone Magazine, November 2009 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

World-renowned pianist Murray Perahia’s second new studio album this year, a welcome return after a break of three years due to injury. Nominated for Classic FM Gramophone Awards Artist Of The Year 2008. The album will be advertised in Gramophone magazine and other key print titles, and a great response is expected across the board from the media. Murray Perahia’s best-selling albums have sold in excess of 35,000 units each in the UK alone. “one of the most thoughtful and self-effacing pianists of the day…Perahia’s singing tone and shapely phrasing are a joy – even works recorded as frequently as these sound new-minted in his hands” Sunday Times, 16/11/08 **** “… a masterly recital, and one whose undemonstrative performances enable the music to speak for itself most eloquently.” BBC Music Magazine, January 2009 ***** “The opening of the variation set in Op 26… is simplicity itself… and Perahia's swiftly flowing second movement is beautifully judged. His Pastoral… is a joyous balance of warmth of sound (how he makes the piano sing) in the outer movements…” Gramophone Magazine, March 2009 | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

“exquisite playing wedded to a deep understanding of this music. Ohlsson's concentration and dynamic control are mesmerizing...and it is beautifully recorded.” Fanfare “Almost violent dynamic contrasts are frequent, but Ohlsson takes them as far as is idiomatic but no further. Even more important, there are no 'bridge passages' in these performances, everything is melodic or dramatic.” BBC Music Magazine, August 2008 ***** | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

Andreas Haefliger (piano) Of his Perspectives series of recordings for AVIE, Andreas Haefliger says, “In creative programming, I have always seen an opportunity for illuminating the individuality of works by placing them in tonal, dramatic and historic relief. Thus, through the sequence of a recital program, repertoire that has long been familiar to us is put into a new perspective. This series is a document of my concert activity and aims at bringing the recital experience to the living room.” This recital offers the perspective of a great Schubert Sonata that despite its originality also shows its indebtedness to Beethoven. The two popular Beethoven Sonatas have features that resonated deeply with Schubert, who adored the older composer and persistently used his works as models. Previous releases in this series Perspectives 1 (AV 0041) which contrasts Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert with Thomas Adès, and Perspectives 2 (AV 2082) which juxtaposes Beethoven, Brahms and Bartók. 2 CDs for price of 1 “Jaefliger's innate affinity for Beethoven's largely lyrical Op 28 Sonata manifests itself via the pianist's relaxed tempi and ample tone. ” Gramophone Magazine, June 2008 “The idea of recording for CD piano-recital programmes designed for the concert hall is a good one, provided that the programmes make musical sense and that the spontaneity of live performance can be preserved. On both counts, Haefliger succeeds” Sunday Times | | Avie - AV2148 (CD - 2 discs) Normally: $16.99 Special: $13.59 |

| Beethoven - Piano Sonatas
“The stand-out performance here is Op. 109, where Biss is never less than compelling and at times profound. The way he dissolves the sonority of the Andante's final variation before coalescing for the theme's final return is a magical moment of great emotional force.” BBC Music Magazine, December 2007 **** “Many people are high on Jonathan Biss, the young American pianist, and they are not wrong…..Jonathan Biss is a musical fellow” New York Sun | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Beethoven - The Piano Sonatas (Volume 4)
Live recording from Zurich’s Town Hall, produced by Manfred Eicher “Stimulating and provocative…a magnificent release” BBC Music Magazine ***** “…whether the performances illuminate or irritate, Schiff consistently conveys a sense of timbral differentiation between registers akin to the instruments of Beethoven's time, together with their unique pedal effects. For example, listen to the pungent resonance of the bass notes in the Op 26 first-movement minore variation, or how the vaporous haze of the Moonlight's celebrated Adagio sostenuto never turns muddy.” Gramophone Magazine, October 2007 “András Schiff's Beethoven Sonata cycle… continues to be stimulating and provocative, always forcing one to hear such familiar music in a new light. As he approaches the final sonatas of the composer's early period, Schiff makes us fully aware of the enormous stylistic and emotional journey that Beethoven had traversed from his first essays in the medium. A magnificent release.” BBC Music Magazine, August 2007 ***** BBC Music Magazine

| | | Beethoven - Piano Sonatas Volume 2
Angela Hewitt is widely acknowledged as one of the great pianists of the age. Gramophone Artist of the Year in 2006 and
the recent subject of a week-long artist focus on BBC Radio 3, her frenetic concert schedule and expanding discography
bear testimony to her extraordinary talent and energy.
Hewitt’s legion of fans will be delighted at this eagerly awaited second volume of Beethoven sonatas. Her first release
in this series was fulsomely praised for its ‘clarity, intelligence and elegance’ … ‘fusing poetry and passion’,
and all these trademark qualities of her playing are fully present in this second disc.
Angela presents three very different works here, written within a period of seven years: the enchanting ‘Pastoral’ Sonata
Op 28, the monumental ‘Pathétique’ Op 13 and the dazzling early masterpiece Op 2 No 3. Her interpretations are
vividly personal, yet the voice of the composer speaks clearly throughout. “Angela Hewitt is on characteristic top form in three of Beethoven’s iconic sonatas … Hewitt’s intelligent planning gives it [Pathétique] a hardcore makeover. The extremes of dynamic range are deftly realised, and she’s
fearless at articulating with a brittle touch where necessary” Classic FM Magazine ***** “The Pastoral sonata leads off Angela Hewitt’s second Beethoven sonata cycle instalment, and she taps into the music’s overall geniality while also paying heed to its darker corners … I love Hewitt’s
conversational give and take between the droning left-hand ostinato and the main theme at the Rondo finale’s outset … in addition to Hyperion’s superb sound, Hewitt, as usual, provides her own penetrating, vividly articulate annotations” Gramophone Magazine | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |
