The latest volume of Christopher Herrick’s acclaimed series of Buxtehude’s complete organ works comes from Paris and the admired organ of St-Louis-en-l’Île – formally opened in 2005, and based on the work of Zacharias Hildebrant (1688-1757). As with previous discs, it includes a selection of the composer’s praeludia, ostinato works, canzonettas and canzonas, interspersed with chorale preludes, chorale fantasias and variations. Highlights include the magnificent Praeludium in D minor, BuxWV140, which is among the finest and most striking examples of the genre, and a particularly beautiful and contrasting set of chorale preludes. “Always captivating and frequently entertaining as he tosses off ornaments and decorative figures with the panache of a circus act, he communicates an enthusiasm for the music which never stoops to poor taste or anything less than thorough musical integrity. Always an invigorating communicator, he is as compelling in his dazzlingly articulated virtuoso displays as he is in the delicate chorale preludes.” Gramophone Magazine, May 2011 “An extraordinarily diverse tonal palette is explored in the chorale-based works...Within the more substantial works...Herrick makes numerous registration changes. These provide welcome variety and strengthen the rhetorical argument of these works which are often highly sectional in nature...This recording, along with its two predecessors in the series, is a first-rate addition to the catalogue.” International Record Review, April 2011 “Herrick is at his most persuasive in the chorale-embroidering preludes...commanding in the large-scale Magnificat Fantasia, to-the-point in the extended fugue which concludes BuxWV 145, and he discovers his inner Koopman-esque wild man at the start of the F sharp minor Praeludium whose key elicits a blaze of bullish 'attitude' from the organ's not-quite-equal temperament.” BBC Music Magazine, May 2011 **** | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

Dieterich Buxtehude’s organ works are his most significant contribution to the history of music. They consist of a comprehensive corpus of just 90 compositions, of which more than half are chorale settings. However, these are mostly shorter than the preludes, toccatas and other freely conceived pieces, so these last represent a more substantial share of his entire output. Five different types of pieces are included among the works collected in this CD, all representing distinct genres of improvisatory styles that make up the broad spectrum of the daily practice of organists in Lutheran Germany, whether designed as functional music for worship services, for presenting them in recitals, or for purposes of compositional study. Ton Koopman studied organ with Simon C. Jansen and harpsichord with Gustav Leonhardt, alongside musicology in Amsterdam and was awarded the Prix d’Excellence for both instruments. As an organist he has performed and ecorded on the most prestigious historical instruments of Europe. “The preludes afford Koopman his most exhilarating flights of fancy, but his ever-present unwillingness to 'play safe' stamps a thought-provoking individuality on an ongoing series which prefers to maximise Buxtehude's fertile quirkiness rather than entomb him in the marble of respectful old-masterdom.” BBC Music Magazine, February 2009 **** | | | Usually despatched in 4 - 5 working days. |

Julia Brown (organ) Martin Pasi Organ, Saint Cecilia Cathedral, Omaha, Nebraska “Brown is unquestionably a first-class artist and superb technician, but she also proves a serious Buxtehudian and an exceptionally sensitive stylist regarding the critical aspects of balancing voices and ensemble-building. The Martin Pasi Organ is a magnificent instrument, and the engineering does full justice to its solo and ensemble configurations. This is another fine addition to Naxos' Buxtehude series and a must for organ fans!” 10/10 ClassicsToday | | | (also available to download from $6.00) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. “Faultless registration and tempi; fluidity of rhythm and her ability to make the instrument sing out into the acoustic of the building are becoming hallmarks of this series. These qualities make her playing of the Choral Preludes particularly effective; a perfect balance of the melody against its contrasting accompaniment.” Andrew McGregor, bbc.co.uk, 10th October 2005 “The chorale preludes "sing" with greater clarity, while the often wild freestyle nature of the four Praeludia…here sound more texturally detailed and chromatically varied. Her stirring conclusion to the first Praeludium in G minor is particularly ravishing.” Classics Today | | | (also available to download from $10.50) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days.
