Mariss Jansons conducts Mahler Symphony No. 2

Mariss Jansons conducts Mahler Symphony No. 2

Mahler:

Symphony No. 2 in C minor 'Resurrection'

Anja Harteros (soprano) & Bernarda Fink (alto)

Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks (Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra)

Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen (Rückert-Lieder)

for 16 Voices arranged by Clytus Gottwald

Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks, Mariss Jansons

Gustav Mahler’s gigantic Symphony No. 2 in C minor usually fi lls out a concert on its own. But in this recording with the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks (Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra) under its principal conductor Mariss Jansons, the work is introduced by an exquisite – and fi tting – choral work: A contemporary (1982) 16-voice arrangement of a song by Mahler, Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen, based on a poem by Friedrich Rückert and originally composed for voice and orchestra in 1901 – performed here by the superb Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks (Bavarian Radio Choir).

The nickname “Resurrection” for Mahler’s Second Symphony is derived from the closing chorus of the last movement, in which Mahler set to music verses from Klopstock’s “Messias”. Although the symphony is a challenge to perform, due to the length of the work as well as the exceptionally large musical scoring, it has become part of the standard repertoire. The Second Symphony is a central work in Mahler’s oeuvre, a work whose Munich performance of 1900 brought him the long hoped-for recognition as composer.

Mahler: Symphony No. 4

Mahler: Symphony No. 4

Recorded live at the Concert Hall of the Culture and Convention Centre Lucerne, 21/22 August 2010

Mahler:

Symphony No. 4 in G major

Rückert-Lieder (5 songs, complete)

In Summer 2010 Claudio Abbado and his outstanding Lucerne Festival Orchestra performed another symphonic work by Gustav Mahler: the Symphony No. 4. Abbado combines the orchestral work (which features a solo soprano in the finale) with Mahler’s “Rückert-Lieder”. Soloist in both works is the Czech soprano Magdalena Kozena.

Magdalena Kožená does not only make the “heavenly joys” resound in the final movement of Mahler’s fourth symphony. Before that, she devotes herself to the seraphic beauty and intimate simplicity of Mahler’s Rückert Lieder.

Practically all the songs that Mahler composed prior to 1900 were based on texts from “Des Knaben Wunderhorn”, a collection of folk poems published by Clemens Brentano and Achim von Arnim. From then on, Mahler turned exclusively to a single poet - the Franconian orientalist and translator Friedrich Rückert. Mahler confessed that the poems moved him so deeply that he sometimes felt he had written them himself. In the transcendent final Lied, “Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen”, he also quoted a phrase from the Adagio of his 4th symphony. Asked what it meant, he said that it personified himself.

Claudio Abbado is undeniably a supreme Mahler conductor and his best selling recordings with the Lucerne Festival Orchestra – symphonies No. 2, 3, 5, 6 and 7 have already been released on EuroArts – have set new standards in interpretation of works by Gustav Mahler.

“there's no-one...who lifts the phrases so beguilingly (and without a baton) as does Abbado. You'll never see a first movement done with bigger smiles or more wide-eyed wonder, nor the poco adagio heaven inflected as artistically as here from the master's goodlooking love-in orchestra, filmed with ingenuity as always by Michael Beyer's camera team.” BBC Music Magazine, April 2011 ****

“There are innumerable incidental beauties from all sections: the woodwind nothing short of sublime, the brass tactfully reticent, the strings perhaps most remarkable of all with their radiant pianissimos...Kožená sings with consummate technical control and intellectual understanding...Here is profoundly affecting artistry which for once lives up to the hype.” Gramophone Magazine, February 2011

“The most remarkable thing of all is the sense of intimacy that he achieves: this is Mahler conducting of the greatest insight, matched by playing of the highest quality, matched by pacing of the highest quality...I can't think of any other filmed performance of this symphony that I'd rather hear and watch...This is a DVD to cherish.” International Record Review, March 2011

Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Manfred Honeck

On 7 July 2010 Kaliště in Czech Republic, where Gustav Mahler was born on this very day 150 years ago, the music world celebrated one of the greatest composers ever. The renowned Mahler Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Austrian maestro Manfred Honeck, and world famous soloists will commemorate the composer with an unique outdoor live concert.

Gustav Mahler was born into a Jewish family in Kaliště on July 7, 1860 as the second of fourteen children. His exceptional musical gifts became apparent at an early age. He began giving music lessons when he was six, and at fifteen he was admitted to the Vienna Music Conservatory. He embarked on what was to become an extraordinary career as a conductor and operatic administrator when he was barely twenty. Mahler was best known during his own lifetime as one of the leading orchestral and operatic conductors of the day. He has since come to be acknowledged as one of the most important late-romantic composers

Christa Ludwig (mezzo-soprano) & Charles Spencer (piano)

Christa Ludwig is acknowledged as one of the twentieth century’s most explorative and complete vocal artists. Her professional singing career spanned five decades and, as a star of the international operatic stage, she made roles as diverse as Rosina, Dorabella, Cherubino, Leonore, Amneris, Eboli, Kundry, Ortrud, Clytemnestra and the Marschallin her own, excelling in soprano, mezzo and coloratura mezzo repertoire. She also established her reputation as a fine lieder singer. The intimate auditorium of the magnificent neo-baroque Volkstheater in Vienna was packed with a discerning and enthusiastic audience when Christa Ludwig gave a master class there. The intimate auditorium of the magnificent neo-baroque Volkstheater in Vienna was packed with a discerning and enthusiastic audience when Christa Ludwig gave a master class there. The young singers who took part – Valerij Serkin (tenor), Stella Grigorian (mezzo) and Marcus Pelz (baritone) – were all studying at an advanced level, with their sights set on fi nding success as professionals on the operatic stage. Christa Ludwig focused the time she spent with each singer on helping them to find the dramatic truth expressed in the aria of their choice and advising on how they could communicate this in their interpretation. The master class includes pieces by Beethoven, Bizet and Massenet and, at the end, the greatness of her art is recalled as she is seen singing Mistress Quickly in a production of Verdi’s Falstaff (1982).

“Filmed in Athens in 1994, this is one of the great German mezzo's final Lieder recitals. With her voice still in fine fettle and her interpretative powers undiminished, it's an impressive token of her artistry.” BBC Music Magazine, July 2009 ****

Accentus & Les Monts du Reuil, Laurence Equilbey

This film was shot as a result of the huge success of the two volumes of “Transcriptions” performed by the award-winning choral group “Accentus” under its conductor Laurence Equilbey. The director Andy Sommer has created what he describes as “a sort of ‘a cappella musical’ focusing on the repertoire of transcriptions”.

“If you have missed the two marvellous “Transcriptions” volumes from Laurence Equilbey and her wonderful Accentus group, this might be a perfect introduction. Otherwise, this is a fine complement. A film to match the albums for sheer quality...To revisit two of the most impressive choral recordings of the past five years in the company of this visually inspired film is a true delight. In a nutshell, this is beautiful music, beautifully sung and beautifully filmed.” Gramophone Magazine, June 2008
