The American mezzo Stephanie Blythe sings three works of high Romanticism, all depicting, in different ways, a sense of loneliness, abandonment and spiritual crisis. Brahms’ autobiographical Alto Rhapsody for alto, male chorus and orchestra has long been one of the core works of the alto/mezzo repertoire; Wagner’s intimate Wesendonck-Lieder are performed here in Henze’s version for chamber ensemble, while the heart-wrenching Abschied (Farewell) from Das Lied von der Erde is heard in the delicate arrangement by Mahler’s disciple Schoenberg. | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Mahler - Adagios
Today Mahler's music enjoys an unprecedented level of popularity throughout the world - resurgence in interest that began in the 1960s, and which was fuelled by the use of the composer's music in films such as Visconti's Death in Venice and Ken Russell's Mahler. This new addition to Decca's popular Adagios series has over two hours of Mahler's most haunting, emotional and beautiful music. The recordings included here feature the famous partnership of Sir Georg Solti and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, as well as Riccardo Chailly and the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin with Brigitte Fassbaender in the haunting "Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen". An ideal introduction to the world of Mahler. | | | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |

| | | Mahler: Lieder
Bo Skovus is considered to be one of the top Lieder interpreters of his generation. This Danish baritone is a star of the Vienna State Opera. He performs with the leading opera houses and orchestras in Europe, America and Japan. “Skovhus is an experienced practitioner of the art of Lieder recital and is renowned for taking risks with his interpretations. He has plenty of voice when he so chooses, even if a certain throatiness is creeping in these days...
Vladar’s pianism... is a real tour de force: rich in tone, subtle in dynamics and wonderfully vivid” MusicWeb International, August 2012 | | | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

| | | Mahler Songs
Maria Forsström (contralto), Johannes Landgren (organ) ”Mahler Songs” is an enormous transcription project, which has taken two years to complete. The original orchestration is here re-arranged for a grand symphonic organ. The intention is to get to know how the beyond-the-world aspect in Mahlers music and song texts can be deepened through the encounter with the sacred room and the organ as a sacred instrument. The recording has been made with 10 microphones in a surround system in the Vasa Church, Göteborg, Sweden. The fantastic orchestral organ of this church was built in 1909 and has been fundamental for awakening the idea and inspiring its fulfillment. | | | This item is currently out of stock at the UK distributor. Recorded New York 1949 or 1950 “Particularly important is the performance by its dedicatee of the Berkeley cycle, Ferrier's first surviving recorded collaboration with Barbirolli. Her singing is as balm to the ear, as is her attention to the meaning of the texts of these lovely settings. From a quite different tradition come the three quartets by Brahms. Ferrier's solo contributions are more marked but it is the euphony of the four voices and the ardour in which they project Brahms's settings that is most enjoyable.” Gramophone Magazine, February 2006 | | | Usually despatched in 3 - 4 working days. |
