This fascinating CD includes music from all periods of Nielsen's creative output, from the early songs through the poorly-received second violin sonata, to the undoubted late organ masterpiece, Commotio, which Bo Holten believes can only be fully realised by a full symphony orchestra. Kevin Bowyer (organ)

"Kevin Bowyer seems to have an insatiable appetite for recording. In the middle of the most comprehensive recorded survey of Bach's organ music ever, and with a spate of other discs ranging from Brahms and Schumann to Schoenberg and Sorabji, hardly a month passes without another release arriving for review. Such profligacy might be indicative of enthusiasm rather than musical integrity but not in Bowyer's case, and I find his seemingly inexhaustible repertoire of unusual music a source of endless delight… Bowyer's declared purpose in putting this programme together is to celebrate the Danish town of Odense – only Gade had no direct connection with the place. Bowyer himself has spent a considerable part of this decade there – winning the Odense international organ competition in 1990 and subsequently making most of his recordings there. He hardly needs an excuse for using the Marc Rochester, Gramophone
