| | | Pepe Romero: Spanish Nights
The guitar legend Pepe Romero is back with his first solo album for Deutsche Grammophon. With “Spanish Nights” he presents a highly personal musical recreation of the Spain he knew in his youth: often dark, introspective and melancholy but also powerful and affirmative. The artist recalls: “Dreams of freedom and peace were expressed through the arts. Among my family’s close circle were great musicians, poets, painters and composers. When we moved to the US, we continued living in an idealized Spain.” Celebrated worldwide for his interpretations and technique, guitarist Pepe Romero is in constant demand for solo recitals and appearances with orchestra. The album features a world premiere recording, Suite Madrileña No.1, written by Celedonion Romero, Pepe’s father and founder of “Los Romeros”. 2013 marks Celedonio’s centenary, who was born on 2 March. His Philips recording of RODRIGO: Concierto de Aranjuez; Fantasía para un Gentilhombre has sold over 300,000 units worldwide. “while Pepe Romero is only in his late sixties, this is 'late style' playing, the tempi uniformly slower than one would normally hear, the tendency to focus on sheer beauty of tone more pronounced...Not that there isn't fire: Romero is also a fine flamenco guitarist and there's plenty of passion in Turina's flamenco-inspired Sevillana.” Gramophone Magazine, November 2012 | | | (Sorry, download not available in your country) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. |

| | | Segovia - 1950s American Recordings Volume 6
In this sixth and last volume of André Segovia’s 1950s American recordings, the great guitarist is heard in a number of his transcriptions from eminent nineteenth century composers as well as in original guitar solos composed by his Spanish and South American contemporaries. The considerable diversity of the music is presented in Segovia’s inimitable manner, every nuance of sound and colour being uniquely exploited in delicately refined interpretations. Of particular note is Segovia’s interpretation of Falla’s Homenaje ‘Le Tombeau de Claude Debussy’, now regarded as one of the most emotionally charged solo guitar works. In his preface to Villa-Lobos’s Douze Etudes, that the composer had dedicated to him, Segovia writes: ‘Villa- Lobos has made a gift to the guitar’s history of the fruits of his talents as vigorous and as wise as that of Scarlatti and Chopin’. “Expected composers like Villa-Lobos, de Falla and Torroba are joined by Grieg, Schumann, Brahms, Franck and Scriabin in transcriptions which, under Segovia's hands, sounds entirely natural and convincing.” BBC Music Magazine, September 2008 **** “…there have been…few to rival the variety and beauty of the sounds [Segovia] produced…he was certainly the guitar's most powerful advocate, the ultimate 'effective guitarist' who opened doors for all those who followed” Gramophone Magazine | | | (also available to download from $8.75) | Usually despatched in 2 - 3 working days. For the first time, this budget priced 6 CD collection re-presents Segovia’s highly-prized recordings made for American Decca in the 1940s and 1950s, when he was arguably at the height of his powers. Here are the first six albums released by the label in that now legendary series, presented for the first time in original LP couplings and with their striking original-sleeve artwork: Andrés Segovia Guitar Solos; An Andrés Segovia Recital; An Andrés Segovia Concert; An Andrés Segovia Program; An Evening with Andrés Segovia; Andrés Segovia Plays… Many of these 80+ tracks are appearing on Deutsche Grammophon for the first time. The set has been newly remastered, with a minimum of intervention, from original tapes or tape copies of original glass masters. Like the best whisky, Segovia’s art is unfiltered on these CDs. The results reveal a new intimacy and delicacy in these six classic recitals that are wholly captivating. The package: Mini-LP sleeves (front and back), CD booklet (in the style of the The Martha Argerich Collection) has new liner notes by Segovia expert Graham Wade comprising introduction and annotations on each of the albums, with colour minis. Arrangements & transcriptions by Andres Segovia “This is Segovia absolutely in his prime, tackling everything from Frescobaldi, Handel and Haydn through Mendelssohn and Franck to Falla, Villa-Lobos and Tansman with his inimitable combination of childlike innocence and arch sophistication. Sensitively remastered and with excellent notes by Segovia expert Graham Wade...” Gramophone Magazine, September 2009 | | | (Sorry, download not available in your country) | In stock - usually despatched within 1 working day. |
