Read Presto's complete review of this disc here.

First release of the live concert from the 2003 Verbier Festival.

Four star singers: Andrea Rost, Magdalena Kožená, Matthew Polenzani, Thomas Quasthoff and two great pianists: Yefim Bronfman, James Levine.

Performed in the spirit of true chamber music, with characterful voices and a feeling of mutual sympathy, the singers and their accompanists display a wide range of mood, colour, accentuation, blend and individuality.

A linked programme of Brahms lieder, sung by each of the soloists in turn, and Brahms’s ever-popular Liebeslieder Waltzes opp. 52 and 65.

Generous 80+ minutes of great music-making.

“The quartet themselves make an appealingly lively sound…Quasthoff and especially Kozena are strongest in their solo selections, the mezzo’s three songs distinguished by her plangent tone and slightly shimmering vibrato. Polenzani sings with pleasingly ardent tone” Gramophone Magazine, October 2016

“There’s such a pervasive sense of holiday spirit here that you can virtually taste the crisp Swiss mountain air...the four starry singers are perfectly cast, sparking off one another like a top-notch string quartet and achieving that rare feat of blending seamlessly when required but also contrasting quite beautifully throughout. And most appealingly of all, everyone just sounds like they’re having enormous fun.” Presto Classical, 17th June 2016

Nachtigall, Op. 97 No. 1

Gabriel Schwabe (cello), Nicholas Rimmer (piano)

A period of twenty-one years separates Brahms’ two Cello Sonatas. Suffused with lyricism and expressive ardour, the First has become one of his most popular chamber works. The Second is more sober and succinct than the earlier work, yet strikingly original, not least for the wide range required of the cellist to reach unusually high notes from the very low register.

Chosen to suit the cello’s particular colour and articulation, the six songs are heard in idiomatic and sensitive arrangements which stay as close as possible to the originals.

“Schwabe and Rimmer bring lots of drive and energy to the outer movements and they build up the tension in the Allegro appassionata to a powerful climax…fluidity and subtlety [are] far more in evidence in their enterprising transcriptions of Six Songs, all of which are projected with affection and bags of charisma.” BBC Music Magazine, November 2015

Ian Bostridge (tenor), Graham Johnson (piano)

Ian Bostridge brings his characterful lyricism, and singing of beautiful intelligence, to a welcome sixth volume in Graham Johnson’s comprehensive series.

“Bostridge is totally convincing, particularly in his wonderfully sensitive handling of the Op 96 collection. Johnson, that poet of the piano, underpins everything with just the right level of ardour – and he writes tremendous sleeve notes.” The Observer, 23rd August 2015 *****

“The British tenor’s vocal personality divides his listeners, but his commitment to German art song can’t be challenged. Brahmsians will want this volume of Graham Johnson’s continuing series, not least for his explanatory note...He sings the Minnelied, Op 71, No 5, with rapt intensity.” Sunday Times, 6th September 2015

“Those following the series have little need to hesitate, not least due to the reliably intelligent and sensitive accompaniment Johnson supplies…Bostridge's fans have no need to hesitate either, and the virtues of his distinctive Lieder-singing art are very much in evidence.” Gramophone Magazine, September 2015

“On the plus side, there's [Bostridge's] customary detailed attention to text; he uses some idiosyncratic tonal colouring to paint in its meanings, but the approach is always intelligent. He is at his most lyrically graceful in Die Kränze, and finds just the right level of tone for each phrase of Botschaft…but Liebesglut could do with greater tonal variety and Es liebt sich so liebliche im Lenze! with more warmth.” BBC Music Magazine, November 2015

Kathleen Ferrier (contralto)

Kathleen's Ferrier's legacy of recordings has been well-known and widely-admired for over 60 years. So it seems amazing that, after so long, a treasury of previously unpublished and little-circulated BBC broadcasts is now being released. In typical fashion, SOMM leads the way in remembering great composers and artists of the past and Kathleen Ferrier is one of hte most divinely gifted among them. These recordings are from two sources. Several are from BBC's own archives and include Ferrier's first broadcast of Rubbra's Three Psalms, Op. 61, of which she was the dedicatee, five Schubert Lieder, four by Brahms and Parry's Love is a bable, recorded at the 1948 Edinburgh Festival, which makes a delightful conclusion to the album. The other source is the remarkable collection of Kenneth Leech, a composer and engineer who, from the 1930s to the 1950s, recorded numerous broadcasts, mainly using Bakelite and metal discs - the usual way for an enthusiast to preserve radio programmes at that time. This collection is stored at the National Sound Archive in the British Library.

“An essential purchase for anyone interested in the all-too-brief recording career of Kathleen Ferrier…The honesty and integrity of Ferrier’s artistry and the quiet intensity of her interpretations shine through in every track, while the quality of the voice – proper contralto richness, youthful and never hardening into matronly hauteur – can still be heard despite the technical deficiencies in the recordings.” Gramophone Magazine, August 2017

“The recordings, from various sources, have been so well restored by Ted Kendall that one can only praise him and SOMM recordings for making it available to us, after so long a time, such artistry as comes so very rarely to our troubled world.” Musical Opinion, July 2017

“The naturalness, clarity and poise of Ferrier's lieder and song is evident in every bar...Rubbra's Three Psalms, dedicated to Ferrier, are wonderful: testament too to the empathy and polish of pianist Frederick Stone...Sound is necessarily primitive but has been as lovingly restored as possible.” Classical Music, August 2017 *****

“These are all still exceptionally beautiful, valuable reminders of an extraordinary artist.” BBC Music Magazine, October 2017 ****

These releases from the archives of the RIAS and the Sender Freies Berlin document the unequalled quantitative and qualitative spectrum which baritone Fischer-Dieskau acquired during the five decades of his career.

They offer a fascinating insight into the breadth of his repertoire as well as his artistic approach, with which he maintained a careful balance of development and continuity until the end. These recordings – spanning Beethoven’s sacred songs Op. 48 of 1806, through Schumann, Brahms, Mahler and Reger, to Heinrich Sutermeister’s expressive psalm setting of 1948 – demonstrate the essential Fischer-Dieskau.

Not only do they document the artistic partnership with pianists such as Hertha Klust, Daniel Barenboim, Cord Garben, Aribert Reimann and Tamás Vásáry, but also the delightful collaboration with the organist Ulrich Bremsteller.

Furthermore, Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau can be heard together with his wife and musical partner, Julia Varady. This is a documentary edition both in the sense of a historic and an artistic legacy: it reveals the riches of lieder from the last two centuries which Fischer-Dieskau, in his role of musical chronicler, made accessible for the present age; and it is an impressive record of an incomparable interpretational art, according to which word and music were always treated and realised as a unit.
