American pianist Garrick Ohlsson, whose Complete Chopin set was acclaimed as one of the most important anniversary releases of 2010, now turns to another significant, though often overlooked, body of Romantic piano music – Brahms’s complete variations.

The coruscatingly difficult Paganini variations, a bravura display of pyrotechnic virtuosity, frequently feature in piano competitions, performed to demonstrate extraordinary technique. In this performance, Garrick Ohlsson also displays remarkable musicality.

The Variations and Fugue on a theme of Handel is one of the summits of his entire keyboard output, showing the composer at the height of his powers. This 2-disc set also contains some little-known gems, including the wonderful Variations on an Original Theme.

“Ohlsson’s muscular performance does not ignore the yearning that lies beneath the surface.” The Telegraph, 22nd October 2010 ***

“These highly absorbing discs bring together all Brahms’s freestanding variation sets for piano in poised, intense performances.” Sunday Times, 3rd October 2010 ***

“An near to flawless collection of piano variations from the American piano virtuoso” The Times, 9th October 2010 ****

“These early variations [Op. 18] are light years away from the intimacy of Brahms's late piano pieces, and Ohlsson's iron-clad technique and robust, forward tone generally suit them well.” The Guardian, 14th October 2010 ***

“he's a born Brahmsian, equipped at the highest level with the necessary speed and power, the muscular strength and facility of finger tempered by breadth of outlook and solidity of intellect.” BBC Music Magazine, December 2010 *****

“Here is none of the turgid, bass-heavy portentousness that so often bedevils recordings of Brahms's music...This is a great Brahms recording that elevates and illuminates the music with a lightness of touch and heart that eludes many (yet he can darken the tone when required, as in Var. 13)” Gramophone Magazine, November 2010

Brahms:

Piano Sonata No. 3 in F minor, Op. 5

Variations on a theme by Schumann in F sharp minor, Op. 9

Scherzo in E flat minor, Op. 4

Gabriele Carcano (piano)

Gabriele Carcano consciously took his time with this debut CD: “I waited such a long time in order to play a programme with which I can express who I am.” Beyond question, the Variations, Op. 9 on a Theme by Schumann had to be included. “I absolutely wanted to record them, because this work is so personal and so many reference points are contained within it” – especially the composer’s proximity to Schumann and then his predilection for the variation genre. This exclusively Brahms programme is completed by the Sonata, Op. 5 right at the beginning and the Scherzo in E-flat minor, Op. 4 at the end of the CD.

“He brings an admirable clarity to Brahms’s thick textures in an objective reading that is more lyrical than heroic. A cool beauty pervades the slow movement and tensile elasticity characterises the Scherzo…intellect trumps passion in this relatively low-key approach, which will satisfy listeners who prefer an Apollonian Brahms, while frustrating others for whom dramatic intensity and spontaneity are key” Gramophone Magazine, December 2016

Piano Sonata No. 1 in C major, Op. 1

This is Volume 4 in Barry Douglas’s monumental project to record the complete works for solo piano by Johannes Brahms. Each volume has been released to critical acclaim, the first one, in 2012, being seen by BBC Music as ‘a triumph of Brahmsian thought, with playing that gets right to the heart of the composer’.

Once again, the album is presented as a stand-alone recital, prominently featuring the C major Sonata, which was Brahms’s first published work. The influence on Brahms of his early romantic predecessors Beethoven and Schubert is obvious here, not only in the virtuoso demands on the performer but also in the opening, which recalls both Beethoven’s ‘Hammerklavier’ Sonata, Op. 106 and Schubert’s ‘Wanderer’ Fantasy.

Two other works are much more than simple sets of variations. The Variations on a Theme by Robert Schumann highlight the close relationship of Brahms with Schumann and his wife, Clara, to whom the work is dedicated ‘with intimate reverence’, and demonstrate Brahms’s skill at ‘thematic actualisation’, whereby latent potentialities of a theme are gradually revealed throughout the variation process. In the Variations on a Theme by Niccolò Paganini – the first of two books originally published in 1866 as ‘Keyboard Studies’ – each variation explores a distinct figural pattern or keyboard technique.

The recording also features short keyboard character pieces, abundant in the second half of the nineteenth century and especially in Brahms’s later years.

“Douglas comes fully alive throughout the C major Sonata. His proportioned rubatos in the first movement's second theme and broodingly sustained Andante imbue the unwieldy textures with colour and variety.” Gramophone Magazine, May 2015

“Douglas achieves a magnificently orchestral textures. This is big, broad-boned playing of a high order: powerful but never noisy; grand but never grandiose; texturally lucid and tonally rich.” BBC Music Magazine, August 2015 ****

“Der Abend dämmert, das Mondlicht scheint” (Dusk is falling, the moon is shining)

Clara Schumann wrote in her diary: “A visit by Brahms. There is one that comes as if sent by God. He played us sonatas, scherzos etc., all showing exuberant imagination, depth of feeling and mastery of form. Robert said he could not tell him to leave something out of or to add to his music.”

Brahms’ 3rd Piano Sonata (1853) is a work of symphonic proportions, his largest for piano solo, and indeed his last piano sonata. It is a passionate piece of music, masterfully combining a strict classical sonata structure with romantic spirit and content.

The Variations on a Theme of Schumann (1854) are among the most satisfying and successful works of the young Brahms, and they are a moving homage to his mentor and to Clara.

With energy and sensitive virtuosity, the exceptional pianist Carmen Piazzini brings a new dimension of musicality and tone colour to the works of Schumann, Brahms and Schubert.

This CD is a fascinating encounter with the great musician and prize winning pianist in his home country of Argentina. “Through all the sounds in thecolourful dream of the earth, one soft long-drawn note can be heard by the one who listens in secret“ Robert Schumann wrote these lines from a poem by Friedrich Schlegel as a motto over the first movement of his famous “C major Fantasy Op. 17”. Carmen Piazzini’s interpretation turns this motto into captivating reality.
